To PÚBLICO, the Secretary of State of the Communities said that he is monitoring the situation and that he has already requested information from the Portuguese consulate in Lyon.

It seems to be standard practice to contact the consular authorities when a child goes missing on foreign soil.

Just as it appears to be standard practice for newspapers to carry reader comment criticising the parent.  As well as taking it to facebook to let off some steam.

At the moment these are outweighed by positive and supportive comment ... I just hope Maeyls  is recovered safe and well very soon ... or we may witness history repeating itself.
It is so easy to kick people when they are down.

After reading the news in question; About the disappearance of a child, it seems to me that there was a lot of distraction and irresponsibility of the Relatives, because it was on Saturday night and only went to inform the Authorities on Sunday, it seems to me that they first paid more attention to the Feast than to the child . "The alert was given on Sunday morning." The alert was given by the authorities in particular by the police not by the parents ... When a child or adult disappears in France the authorities alert the media as soon as possible to send photos / information about the missing person in order to alert the population and obtain Information or witnesses. So stop blaming parents, in this case the mother, who poor thing must be suffering horrors with the disappearance of the daughter ...

France fears for girl Maelys missing since Isere wedding

Concern is growing over the fate of a nine-year-old girl who vanished while attending a wedding in eastern France. The girl, Maëlys De Araujo, was last seen in a children's room at about 03:00 on Sunday (01:00 GMT). Extensive searches of the area around the wedding hall using a helicopter and police dogs have thus far failed to find a trace of the girl.

A kidnapping investigation has begun and police have issued an appeal for witnesses.

Police have already interviewed all 180 attendees at the wedding, which took place in a hall in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, Isère. Reports say they will now begin questioning friends and relatives of the girl and her family who did not attend.

Maëlys was at the wedding along with her mother - cousin of the bride - father, and older sister. They are said to live in the nearby department of Jura.

A guest, Gregory, told Le Parisien news site what had happened when guests realised the girl was missing.

"The DJ for the evening announced on the microphone that a child had disappeared. Suddenly, everyone started searching, in the main hall and outside.

"It was anguish. To see the disappearance of a nine-year-old, that's not nothing. We initially thought she must be asleep in a corner after a game of hide-and-seek. After an hour, as we'd found nothing, the police were alerted." Gregory said he believed that a kidnapping had taken place. Reports also say police dogs failed to find any scent of the girl beyond the car park of the wedding hall, suggesting the girl did not run away.

Police, firefighters and volunteer firefighters have searched woodland nearby, a nearby river and even sewers.

"Given the time that has elapsed since her disappearance" and "the means deployed to find her, no accidental or criminal track has been ruled out," said a local prosecutor, Dietlind Baudoin, in a statement. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward to help find Maëlys, who they say is 130cm tall (4'3"), weighs 28kg (4st 6lb), has dark skin, brown eyes and hair, and was wearing a white sleeveless dress.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl who has gone missing at a wedding in France may have been bundled into a car by kidnappers, police fear.

Officers fear a criminal act because sniffer dogs found Maelys’ scent in the hall and out into the car park – but it ended there.

It's not looking good right now for this beautiful little girl. The best hope is that her disappearance is as a result of a custody dispute.
Possibly the scent trail was from her arrival at the wedding rather than departure. I read somewhere that the caretaker's house has been searched.

A man has been detained by French police investigating the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl at a wedding party in the eastern region of Isère early on Sunday, reports say.
The 34-year-old was a wedding guest, the Dauphiné Libéré newspaper quoted a prosecutor as saying.
He had previously given an inconsistent account of his whereabouts.
Maëlys de Araujo was last seen at 03:00 (01:00 GMT) in a children's area at a hall in Pont-de-Beauvoisin.
The arrested man was known to police and his home was being searched, BFMTV reported.
Maëlys had gone to the wedding with her parents and elder sister as well as other members of her family. The DJ raised the alarm when she was reported missing and the 180 guests tried to find her before police were called and a search began.
Local police, search and rescue teams, divers and cavers have been searching the heavily-wooded area but have so far failed to find a trace of her.
Sniffer dogs lost the scent from Maëlys's cuddly toy in a car park outside the wedding venue, AFP reported, suggesting that she could have been taken away by car.
Police have interviewed many of the wedding guests as well as people who were attending two other events nearby.
The search was continuing in driving rain on Thursday but a policeman told French TV that the prospect of finding anything was becoming less and less likely.

There is also a report in the Independent which says the detained man was not a wedding guest. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/maelys-de-araujo-mssing-girl-wedding-kidnapped-man-arrested-french-police-investigation-a7921636.html

According to a recent French report, the 34-year-old man being held for questioning is a relative of the father of the child who has previous convictions for petty crime.  It seems he arrived late to the wedding party and left around the time the child disappeared.

I'm hoping for a custody dispute ... nothing that has been found so far indicates she has been harmed but the longer she is missing the worse I feel about it.
I hope she is found very soon.

It would be the least of two evils but the fact she disappeared from a private function held in a very public venue would appear to point to something more sinister.  Let's hope not though.

23:42 - The inhabitants of the area want to find Maëlys

Little Maëly has disappeared for almost a week now. Since then, the gendarmerie has been actively seeking her. With it, the inhabitants of the region want above all to make themselves useful. "Thanks to the social networks, they will be more than 2000 to meet tomorrow Saturday to rake an area of more kilometers in search of clues. The action is seen with a good eye by the authorities who intend to frame it. This shows especially the momentum of solidarity provoked by the disappearance of little Maëlys, "says the journalist of Franceinfo Josselin Debraux.

22:07 - Disappearance of Maëlys: the gendarmes want to make sure that nothing escaped them

Since Wednesday, reinforcements of gendarmes have arrived in Pont-de-Beauvoisin (Isère) to try to find the little Maëlys disappeared in the night from Saturday to last Sunday. A hundred soldiers are mobilized, said Colonel Yves Marzin, commander of the gendarmerie group of Isère. Nautical means are also used to rake again the area around the area where the girl has disappeared. The search section of the air transport gendarmerie also engaged a drone to cross the area. "There are two objectives for us ... First, we must be certain that the first waves of sweeping (in the immediate vicinity of the place of disappearance, note) have been made exhaustively. have made it possible to carry out research in certain places to ensure that no detail has escaped the vigilance of the gendarmes, and then to be able to broaden this research (...) in the approaches a little further from Pont-de- Beauvoisin, "said Colonel Yves Marzin.

20:18 - Two men in custody are friends

According to information from Franceinfo, the two men placed in custody since Thursday for one and this morning for the other know each other and are even friends. They were both present on the evening of the 26th of August, in the neighborhood of the Salle des Fêtes at Pont-de-Beauvoisin, in Isere, where a marriage took place. While small Maëlys is still untraceable, a judicial inquiry for "abduction" has been opened since Monday. The two men, aged 34, were placed in police custody because the prosecutor wants to "confront their statements". "At this stage, investigations and field research to find Maëlys are continuing and no trail can yet be privileged or dismissed," added the magistrate.

A FRENCH prosecutor has opened a formal kidnapping investigation in the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl who went missing from a wedding celebration in the Alps last weekend.

Maelys de Araujo was last seen in the early hours of Sunday at a community hall where the wedding was held in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a village 50 kilometres north of Grenoble.

Grenoble deputy prosecutor Laurent Becuywe said on Saturday that no leads would be cast aside in the investigation, including the possibility that the girl was a victim of an accident.

Two men, both 34, were released without charges on Friday night after being questioned, he said. They were detained on Thursday and Friday.

Investigators sought explanation from the men on “some elements,” he said. “As things stand, it was decided these elements were not enough to justify charges”. He declined to elaborate.

Mr Becuywe said police have questioned more than 200 potential witnesses and carried out about 40 house searches in recent days.

“The absolute priority is to find the young Maelys”, he added.

Until Saturday, the girl’s disappearance was subject to a preliminary investigation. The formal investigation has two judges assigned to the case.

Scores of police, search and rescue teams, divers and cavers have spent the week trawling through the heavily wooded area for signs of her.

On Saturday morning, more than 1200 people were expected to participate in a “citizens’ search” for signs of the girl’s whereabouts, a private initiative organised via social media networks, and co-ordinated by about 15 gendarmes.

A first group of about 400 volunteers braved heavy rain to gather at a parking lot at the local high school at 8am local time, before donning yellow safety vests and splitting up into groups to search the surrounding forest.
“We’re here for her, to find her,” said a person close to Maelys’s family who was taking part. “We’re still hoping to find her safe and sound.”

“It’s really horrible ... we cannot remain indifferent. We have come here for a family facing a shameful situation,” said Frederic, a volunteer who had come with his wife to help trace the girl.

The volunteer teams were expected to relay each other throughout the day, and a hotline has been set up to signal any clues, though police underscored that the areas had already been examined.

Police have interviewed about 250 people since Sunday, including most of the 180 guests at the wedding, as well as several others who attended parties held the same night at a nearby bar and church hall.
Police also requisitioned photos and videos taken by wedding guests to look for any unusual activity.

Sniffer dogs lost the scent from Maelys’s cuddly toy in a car park outside the venue, raising fears she was kidnapped and whisked away by car.

“We’re getting farther and farther away from the site of the disappearance,” a source close to the inquiry told AFP.

“We still think that she was probably taken away in a vehicle.”
Police chief Yves Marzin said authorities are also examining photos and videos taken that day, as well as all calls to the area.
“It is like looking for a needle in a haystack, extremely tedious work but important,” he said.

It doesn't look good at all given the passage of time.  I wonder if there is any history to this girls unexplained disappearance, family disputes etc?

Was this entirely out of character or had she wandered off previously for example?

The fact that it occurred at 3am is undoubtedely extremely worrying.

It is horrible, John.  If her disappearance is as a result of a family dispute I'm sure the police will be on to that. I just hope they find her soon.

Unusually, there is a distinct lack of information about the family in the press which suggests there could be some sort of custody issue.

I have links to the mother & aunts F/B pages if anyone wants them via pm. I'm a little confused right now as to whether Maelys has 1 or 2 sisters - only one older sister was reportedly at the wedding - and also if the parents are still together.

She is Portuguese and it was reported she is a French speaker; something or nothing?  From what you say, Misty, a glimmer of hope there that she may be with family.  Not great, but a great deal better than most of the alternatives.

A source on twitter has said that Maelys's DNA has been found in the car belonging to one of the released suspects. Vehicle had reportedly been thoroughly cleaned. Test results didn't come back until after his release. The route he took after leaving the wedding has not been established. Suspect is a known cannabis trafficker.

A suspect in the disappearance of the girl of Portuguese origin, Maëlys de Araújo, was arrested and charged with abduction on Sunday by the French authorities after being arrested and released last week.

According to the Grenoble prosecutor's office, the 34-year-old man was detained again due to the appearance of new evidence, which contradicts the version of the facts originally reported to the authorities.

Presented to the criminal investigating judge this Sunday afternoon, the suspect was confronted with inconsistencies between the testimony and the evidence collected, but again denied having committed the crime.

According to the newspaper "Le Dauphine," police have found traces of the girl's DNA in the suspect's car.

In a statement, the prosecution reveals that the investigating judge was not convinced by the explanations presented and that he decided to accuse the suspect for the kidnapping of the nine-year-old girl.

Maëlys de Araújo, 9, disappeared more than a week ago during a wedding party in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, France. The man detained this Sunday is one of the wedding guests.

The regional police chief, Yves Marzin, said three sniffer dogs had all lost the scent from Maëlys’s cuddly toy at “the same spot” in the car park outside the venue.

“One of the possible theories is that little Maëlys left in a car, one way or another,” Marzin said.

A source close to the investigation said “each passing hour” made kidnapping more likely than the possibility that Maëlys was involved in an accident or ran away.

The same thing happened to Maddie, the sniffer dogs lost her scent at the car park across from mini reception and that is real evidence.

What is worrying me is Dutroux.  Two of his victims were left to starve when he was in jail ... Maëlys could be in a similar predicament if the guy under arrest has her hidden away and doesn't talk in time.

I wish they could find her.

http://news.sky.com/story/suspect-admits-missing-maelys-de-araujo-9-was-in-his-car-after-dna-found-on-dashboard-11020061

The man charged with kidnapping a nine-year-old French girl has admitted she got into his car - after traces of her DNA were found on the dashboard.

Maelys de Araujo was last seen in the early hours of Sunday 27 August in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a village about 30 miles north of Grenoble in southeastern France.

Despite a massive search of woodland, caves and rivers, no trace of her has been found and the case continues to dominate headlines in France.

Dogs lost the scent from her cuddly toy at a car park outside the wedding venue, suggesting she may have been driven away.

A 34-year-old man was charged on Sunday with the "kidnapping, illegal confinement or arbitrary detention of a minor of less than 15 years".

The man's lawyer told the AFP news agency his client admitted during police questioning that the girl had got into the car - but that he denied abducting her.

He said the suspect, who has not been named, said Maelys had "got into his car with a little boy, onto the back seat to see if his (the suspect's) dog was in the boot".

The man - a guest at the wedding - was arrested last week, along with a friend, over inconsistencies in his statement, but the pair were later released.

It emerged the suspect washed his car after the wedding, but his lawyer said it was because he wanted to sell it.

The suspect is said to live near Pont-de-Beauvoisin with his parents and his re-arrest came after police discovered new evidence.

"Confronted with testimony, findings and scientific evidence, he persisted in his denials and explanations," the prosecutor's office in Grenoble said on Sunday.

"This did not convince the investigative judges, who decided to hold him."

Maelys was at the wedding with her parents and was wearing a white dress and had a cuddly toy with her.

Police have interviewed about 250 people, including nearly all of the 180 guests at the wedding, as well as people at parties held the same night at a bar and church hall.

Meanwhile, the massive search for the nine-year-old continues.
==================================================================

Sadly this looks like the classic paedophile "would you like to look at/help me find my dog" routine & Maelys won't be found alive. Why, just why, are some minds wired in such a disturbing way?

Authorities searching for a nine-year-old girl who went missing from a wedding in the French Alps plan to scale back their efforts, having found no sign of her since her disappearance last month, a source close to the inquiry said Tuesday.
Maelys de Araujo vanished in the early hours of Sunday, August 27, in the southeastern village of Pont-de-Beauvoisin, where she was attending a wedding with her parents.

A 34-year-old local man, who was among the guests, was remanded in custody on September 3 on charges of "kidnapping, illegal confinement or arbitrary detention" after the girl's DNA was found in his car.

But despite an extensive search effort, no sign of her has been found. The suspect has denied any wrongdoing, saying Maelys briefly got into his car with another child and later returned to the wedding party.

Searches of the nearby Chailles gorges in Savoy were ended on Tuesday, the source told AFP, while a search of a nearby lake will continue Wednesday.

"We're exhausting the possible areas where we could have results," the source said, saying searches would now be carried out based on any progress in the investigation.

The disappearance of Maelys caused shock in the tranquil Isere region of mountains, woods and lakes.

Sniffer dogs lost her scent in the car park outside the wedding venue, raising fears she was kidnapped and whisked away by car.

Scores of police search and rescue teams, divers and cavers have combed the area for signs of her, while officers questioned all the wedding guests.

=================================================================

I do hope they don't release the man in custody because of insufficient evidence.

The baffling case of a missing French-Portuguese child in the French Alps got even stranger last week when the police HQ where all evidence is stored went up in flames.

Over 50 vehicles were targeted by a group of anarchists that has owned up to the fire online, calling it an “act that made up part of a wave of solidarity attacks for people who are facing trials in the next few days”.

Observador website says the group has no connection with the Maëlys’ investigation, and luck would have it that the attack spared the car of the principal suspect in her abduction, who remains in police custody despite his protestations of innocence.

Nonetheless, a certain amount of what French police are calling “secondary evidence” has been destroyed by the fire.

Grenoble prosecutor Jean Yves Coquillat has told France Soir that the amount of evidence is “very small”, and “has no great importance” in the case.

It is now over a month since the nine-year-old girl went missing from a wedding reception that has since been found to have had no less than 1o convicted pedophiles among the guests

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Absolutely shocking! I wonder if all the guests were told to keep a close eye on their children?

I wonder how the ratio for the wedding compares to that for convicted paedophiles in a population at large.

Sad to say, Brietta, I don't know. In the case of William Tyrrell (Australia 2014) it turned out there were 2 convicted paedophiles living on the same street his foster grandmother was living in where he was visiting when he disappeared. The population of the little town of Kendall was under 1000 & there were 20 convicted paedophiles living in the area. Maybe they just gather or are placed in certain quieter locations.

I haven't been able to verify that.

An article in France Soir claimed this, citing "several" sources (the only named one being... the suspect's brother). The prosecutor wouldn't confirm whether it was true or not.

The register isn't limited to paedophiles: it's a general register for any sexual or other type of violent offence by an adult or youth with a potential sentence of 5 years or more (whether or not the case is being appealed). The name is generally kept on the register for 20-30 years.

http://www.francesoir.fr/societe-faits-divers/disparition-enlevement-maelys-quest-ce-que-le-fijaisv-ce-fichier-sur-lequel-apparaitrait-plusieurs-suspects-violences-agression-sexuelle-pedophile-nordahl-enquete-pont-de-beauvoisin-kidnapping

According to various other articles floating around, the suspect had been involved in some kind of arson incident at some point, but I don't know if that would qualify for the register or not.

The French media are all over it, as can be expected, but with conflicting "scoops" obtained via "sources".

Social media appear to be torn between support for the family and criticism of the mum for not being there when she disappeared.

Can't think where I've seen that before...

Meanwhile, despite a massive land and waterway search, still no sign of the poor girl.

French police have a new clue in the case of the disappearance of Maëlys, the lusceptible girl of 9 years who has been sought since 27 August. The BFMTV television network reports that investigators have in its possession the recording of a surveillance camera that shows a "white silhouette" in place of the passenger of the main suspect's kidnapping car. The video does not identify either the driver or the passenger, but Maëlys wearing a white dress the day she disappeared from a wedding in Pont-de-Beauvoisin is considered relevant. According to the newspaper Dauphin Liberé , the images show the Audi A3 of Nordahl Lelandais the night Maëlys disappeared. The suspect, who is detained, continues to deny being responsible for the girl's disappearance. The police discovered in his car DNA signs of the minor, which he justifies why Maëlys allegedly entered the vehicle looking for a dog during the wedding party to which he went with his parents.

Missing Maëlys: “radar recorded white shape in passenger seat of suspect’s car”

Almost two months since the disappearance of nine-year-old Maëlys de Araújo - whose father is the son of Portuguese emigrés to France - evidence has suddenly appeared reinforcing the prosecution’s suspicions of the man they already have in custody.

According to reports in the French press, Nordahl Lelandais’ Audi car was photographed by CCTV cameras at around 3am on Sunday August 27 - almost exactly the time Maëlys parents say they realised she was missing.

In the front passenger seat there appears to be “a white shape”.

The photograph is very blurred, say reports. It has not even managed to confirm that the driver at the wheel is indeed Lelandais.

The “white shape” is simply that, despite “techniques of verification”. But what does seem telling is the colour. Maëlys was wearing white when she disappeared.

This harrowing investigation has received little publicity outside of France.

Last month, the missing girl’s parents made an emotional appeal to Lelandais to “say what he knows”, but up till now the former soldier has continued to maintain his innocence even though many aspects of his account to police are said “not to add up” (click here).

Arrested for abduction of Maëlys suspect in triple homicide in 2012
21 DECEMBER 2017

Police are also reviewing at least three other suspected disappearance cases in the area

French police are investigating a new clue in the case of a triple homicide that occurred in the Alps in 2012 and remained unresolved: the new suspect is the man who is detained accused of abducting the lusceptible Maëlys de Araújo, the 9-year-old girl who has been missing since August 27 in France. Police are also reviewing at least three other suspected disappearance cases in the area.

Nordhal Lelandais was questioned this week about the disappearance of a young military man, Arthur Noyer, on the night of 11 to 12 April. Suspected in two cases, is now being considered in relation to a case that shocked the country in 2012, according to the BBC: Saad al-Hilli, Iqbal al-Hilli and his mother Suhaila al-Allaf were murdered during the holidays .

The bodies of Britain's Saad al-Hilli and his wife, and her mother, were found on a road near Lake Anecy on September 5, 2012 - the two daughters survived, one was severely wounded and the smallest was found unharmed, hidden under the mother's body.

"We are reviewing all the disappearances that have taken place in this region," prosecutor Thierry Dran said, without adding further details. But according to the BBC, the cases also include three other disappearances: that of Adrien Mourial, a 24-year-old Belgian who disappeared near Lake Anecy in July and whose skull was found in September; Jean-Christophe Morin and Ahmed Hamad, who disappeared in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Maëlys de Araújo disappeared at dawn on August 27, from a wedding party in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, 85 kilometers from Lyon, in southeastern France. Nordhal Lelandais denies any involvement in the disappearance of the child, but is detained on suspicion of kidnapping.

French police are now searching in an area where the bones of a man who had disappeared were found.  This disappearance may be linked to the current suspect, though a connection has not been proved.

Again following on from the link you provided it seems they now have enough evidence to allow a charge to be made against him for the murder of a soldier.

If this guy is as said a dog trainer and that has a military connection I think it is almost guaranteed he has the expert knowledge to have enabled him to cover his tracks if the police have been using dogs in an effort to locate Maëlys remains.

Snip
According to prosecutor Thierry Dran, the prosecutor's office relied on "serious and consistent evidence" provided by wiretaps on the suspect's phone and by the presence of his vehicle at the military's disappearance site in Savoie, a mountainous region bordering Italy.

Nordhal Lelandais admitted his presence there, but contested all the facts attributed to him.

The DNA of the missing soldier, Corporal Arthur Noyer, was identified on Monday in a skull found on September 7 on a walking trail, the prosecutor said at a press conference.

The accused, a 34-year-old former dog trainer, was in police custody under the new investigation.

Alleged abductor of Maëlys took police to the place where he committed a crime

FEBRUARY 14, 2018

Nordahl Lelandais will have confessed homicide, writes the French press

Nordahl Lelandais, the 34-year-old man who is detained in France and charged with the abduction and murder of Maëlys Araújo, a nine-year-old lusceptible girl, has been driving the police to the scene of the crime on Wednesday.

According to the newspaper Le Dauphine Liberé , Lelandais decided to speak to the detectives after being confronted with traces of blood found in the car itself. So far, the suspect had always denied the charges.

Lelandais then asked the officers to accompany him to Pont-de-Beauvoisin, where the wedding for which both the suspect and the lusceptible child were invited, last August - since then, Maëlys has never been seen again.

The suspect was heard at his request and then led the officers, investigating magistrates and the prosecutor of Grenoble to a nearby excavation zone in Saint-Franc, claiming that he did not remember exactly where he had deposited the body of the child, writes the Dauphine, who cites nearby source of the investigation to say that Lelandais made a confession. "A very significant advance was made in the investigation, a key element," the same source said.

Update in CdM today, at http://www.cmjornal.pt/portugal/detalhe/malys-tinha-maxilar-partido-em-dois?ref=HP_Grupo1

Maelys' body has now been returned to her parents, for her funeral.

Lelandais is in court today.  This is to cover the autopsy findings.  The upper jawbone of Maelys (the part that holds your upper teeth) had been broken in two.  Lelandais will be asked to explain this.

Lelandais is claiming that the death was involuntary.  He says he gave Maelys a slap, then she became unresponsive, and that he panicked.

The link has more.
