Billie-Jo Jenkins pictured a short time before her murder.

At the time of Billie-Jo’s murder, Imiela only had convictions for armed robbery and theft in 1997 and his name never came up as a potential sex attacker.

But police were unaware the psychopath had brutally raped Sheila Jankowitz, 29, at South London in 1987.

The mum-of-two was murdered in South Africa in 2006. But Imiela was convicted at the Old Bailey last month of her rape thanks to DNA and caged for 12 years.

The court heard he dragged Sheila on to waste ground where he battered her and threatened to kill her with a brick.

Police were also unaware Imiela knew the park opposite the home Billie-Jo shared with Sion and Lois Jenkins and their daughters Annie, 12, Lottie, 10, Esther, nine, and Maya, seven.

The youngster had complained to friends about being stalked by a man in a leather jacket from December 1996.

Imiela’s neighbours confirmed he wore such an item of clothing at the time.

Billie-Jo was battered to death at around 3.30pm on Saturday, February 15, 1997, when the rapist had already become a regular visitor to Hastings, which is 20 miles from Appledore.

His unsuspecting girlfriend Christine had lived two roads away from the victim’s home. At the time she would visit her cousin Clare Wilson’s home regularly which was less than two miles away.

Imiela moved to Appledore in 1996 after eight years in jail for armed robbery. His confidence and easy charm attracted Christine who was working as cleaner in the home of deputy mayor Barry Wright where the rapist was lodging.

They became lovers while she was living with her husband and married in 1997. Imiela ran a bric-a-brac shop in Rye, 12 miles from Hastings, before moving into Christine’s home.

Former Headteacher Sion Jenkins outside his fathers home in Aberystwyth.

Billie-Jo was attacked while she was alone at the family’s six-bedroom house. That afternoon Lois had taken Esther and Maya for a walk on the beach while Sion took Annie and Lottie to the Do-It-All store to get white spirit.

On their return Lottie screamed “Dad! Billie’s hurt!” There was thick blood around Billie-Jo’s skull which had been shattered by at least nine blows from the tent spike weighing 1.5lb. The killer left the murder weapon beside her body.

Sion told the emergency services, in a call timed at 3.38pm: “My daughter’s fallen, or she’s got head injuries, there’s blood everywhere, she’s on the floor.”

He was arrested nine days later and was found guilty at Lewes crown court on July 2, 1998.

The prosecution had no motive or witnesses to the attack and claimed it had occurred in a three minute period while Mr Jenkins was away from Annie and Lottie.

He was accused of battering Billie-Jo during an argument before driving the girls to the DIY store.

But doubts lingered over the forensic evidence, lack of motive and the suspicion Billie-Jo had been attacked by a stalker.

At the trial friends said the Jenkins’ were so worried about prowlers they had security lights and window locks fitted.

I've always said that Sion was fitted up for murdering adopted daughter Billie Jo.  I also think that his ex wife has a lot to answer for in all of this since she had it in for him from the very beginning.

How many times was it they tried him?   Three I think if my memory serves me correctly and even then the jury couldn't agree.  They even denied him compensation saying that he has not been cleared.  What a bunch of hero's our Crown Office prosecutors are.

I think Sion Jenkins was very shabbily treated by all concerned including his own wife.  Didn't Lois Jenkins clear off to the Australian island state of Tasmania 4 years after the trial.  She took no part in the trial even though a key witness but flew back to the UK seven years after the murder to be a prosecution witness.  She also gave evidence for the prosecution at each of the next two re-trials, doing so by video link at the first one and then flying back to the UK to appear at the second one when the CPS were struggling to maintain credibility....they lost AGAIN!  It appears she had plenty to say on the last occasion....what changed??

Tarnished innocence and a very loyal wife: Why has Sion Jenkins' new wife Tina never asked him if he killed Billie-Jo?

On the days when he isn’t studying criminology at Portsmouth University, Sion Jenkins often likes to walk along Southsea seafront, gazing out across the Solent to the Isle of Wight and beyond.

Having spent six years in jail for the brutal murder of his 13-year-old foster daughter, Billie-Jo, before being acquitted four years ago, his wife, Tina, claimed that freedom is what matters to the 52-year-old former deputy headmaster.

‘Sion is not into money,’ she insisted this week. She was referring to Jenkins’s unsuccessful claim for up to £500,000 damages for the time he spent inside.

Unquestioning love: Tina Jenkins has no doubt that her husband Sion is innocent of the murder of his daughter, Billie-Jo

Shouldn't this case be on the main boards .... I will be interested to read it. I have to admit I always thought Sion Jenkins was guilty but I must admit I know little about it.

Did you, Tim? From what I recall, there was only that little bit of expirated blood on his fleece from when he cradled the poor girl's head. And didn't she have a piece of black bin liner pushed up her nose? At the time, I think there was some weird tramp in the area, who carried a bin bag about with him. Poor kid. So full of promise.

I do admit to just believing that if they have convicted him he must have done it! I will read up about it though and let you know what I think after reading the details. As you say Shona, Billie-Jo looked a lovely girl and so full of promise. A real shame.

Sorry about this but I believe Jenkins to be guilty. He was well known for having an incredibly violent temper and his 'convenient' excuse that he went to the DIY shop is just a little too obvious for me. His ex-wife exposed him as a very violent, controlling man with a nasty temper who frequently beat his wife and kids. At this stage she had no reason to lie. Also, he was only acquitted on his re-trial because two juries had been unable to reach an agreement on a verdict.
What amazes me is the old chestnut that keeps fooling everybody time and time again..........'a mysterious tramp or stranger was spotted in the vicinity' If you think about that statement for a minute you will realise it's absurdity.
You visit any area, at any time there will be 'mysterious strangers and tramps'. It is a complete kop out.
I believe Jenkins murdered her in a fit of rage. He argued with her and she answered back. This proved to be too much for the controlling violent Jenkins and he picked up a metal tent peg that was in the garden (which had very high walls and was virtually impossible to climb over) and repeatedly battered her in an uncontrolled and explosive rage. This was an up-close and very personal killing. This was NOT a killing by a complete stranger. There was no motive for a complete stranger to attack her; she was not sexually assaulted in any way, the house was not burgled nor broken into. The only person with access to the house and the time to cover it up was Sion Jenkins. The police knew it and neighbours who knew this man knew it. I strongly suspect that he gotten away with murder. The final nod for me was the publication of his book. It was highly inappropriate, embarrassing to his family and particularly insensitive to Billie-Jo's real family. It reminded me of the garbage OJ Simpson wrote after his aquittal. I felt that it was a form of gloating that he'd got away with it.
On 10 August 2010 it was revealed that The Ministry of Justice had refused Siôn Jenkins compensation claim for wrongful imprisonment – such payment is awarded only when a person is shown to be "clearly innocent"
I truly think that justice will one day catch up with this man.

Hi Ian.  You have certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons.

I must admit this is one of my favourite cases and thank you for reminding us of it.  Tim suggested it should be on the main board so I wonder do others agree?

We may struggle to gather evidence though.

I must admit I have formed the opinion that he was hard done by with all the trials and what he went through.  It has always intrigued me though why his wife took the remaining girls and emigrated as far away as Tasmania.

Thanks for your thoughts John,
I believe that after he was convicted, his wife Lois divorced him and moved with their four daughters to Tasmania, severing contact. Days after his acquittal she revealed how he had violently beaten her and their children.
In her diary she alleged that her former husband had a history of domestic violence, violent mood swings and a fascination for corporal punishment. This diary was wriiten way before the murder even took place and she had no reason to lie at all. She stated that he had often lost his temper and punched Billie-Jo. Mrs Jenkins knew exactly what Sion was capable of.
She had given similar evidence during his appeal hearing but the allegations were never heard by the jury. Many people also do not know that was also a proven liar, bully and often cheated on his wife.

Yes, I'd forgotten about this case aswell.  Without knowing very much about the case, I hasten to point out, I always thought that he appeared as guilty as sin.  The alternative scenarios just seemed too unbelievable.  However, I can understand how they failed to reach a verdict.
