Where do I find the story about Madeleine running away and hiding?
There is nothing about that as far as I can see in Russell's statements.

Is anyone familiar with that story?

Yep, supposedly they scampered off through the car parking areas and along the front of 5A in a westerly direction

Sounds like exhuberance and high spirits to me.  Excitement about being on holiday ?

But soz, Rob, I dont know the origins of the story/report.

I don't think there is one.  But I could be wrong about that.

The only mention of it is in Gerry's 10th May statement AFAIK;

That, between Monday and Wednesday, not knowing the precise date, when they left the residence by the main door, to place the children in the respective creches, MADELEINE left [went] running to the left to the extreme opposite of the residential blocks where they were lodged, playing with the twins. That they had gone down to the furthest point away from those blocks, not knowing exactly how, the three children got into the gardens at the rear [of the blocks]. Then they followed the inside corridor [pathway] at the rear, next to the hedges [fences] up to the street that led to the secondary reception.

Gosh that is rather like my kids.  All three of them getting into mischief and not noticed for a while.  I wonder if they opened the door themselves too.

This is an unfair comment, Ferryman.  And is only in your opinion.

What day was it I wonder? Between Monday and Wednesday, Gerry says. Monday 30th nothing is reported, but the children returned to their clubs later than was usual; Madeleine at 15:15 and the twins ten minutes later.

Tuesday 1st is when Kate said they went to the beach for ice cream and came back later than normal, but they were signed into their clubs at 14:30.

If Kate got the day wrong they may have been at the beach on Monday, not Tuesday. This fits with Steve C's statement too, he said he saw them there on Sunday or Monday;

 that you saw them both playing sport and they passed by you at the bar on the beach and this was Sunday or Monday at about mid day.

SC: Mmm, mmm.

What does 'Mmm, mmm' mean?

To me it sounds like uncertainty rather than an answer in the affirmative.

If Gerry knew this did he tell Kate?  Or did Kate tell him about that so so that is the reason he doesn't know the day?  Who discovered that all 3 kids had scampered off?

Could this story be totally untrue?  It doesn't sound true to me as he doesn't know when it happened or the time it happen. He doesn't say he went and fetched the kids back (like the outcome).
I can see a reason he could make up this story as he wants an excuse as to why the tracker dogs followed this route after Madeleine had gone missing.    He had tried to cover up which door they were using so why not something else?   He makes it clear that Madeleine didn't go out of the apartment but there was nothing stopping her doing just that.

Had the tracker dogs been actually following Madeleine's scent from an earlier day there would be every reason for the scent trail to continue all the way to the creches.

"In a further twist, locals now claim that Madeleine did not always settle well. One evening they allege she ran away into the paths between the apartments, hiding for half an hour when it was time for bed."

A gross misrepresentation of what was probably just a game, in my opinion.  And it was hardly the middle of the night.
