Missing Rebecca Watts: Park lake is searched

A lake is being searched as police attempt to locate a teenager who has been missing for more than a week.

Rebecca Watts, 16, was reported missing after not returning to her home in St George, Bristol, eight days ago.

She left home with her mobile phone and laptop but without a change of clothes. Her disappearance is described as "completely out of character".

Police are searching the lake in St George Park. They have previously searched Troopers Hill nature reserve.

The family home has also been scoured by forensic officers.

Rebecca's father Darren Galsworthy and stepmother Anjie were taken from the property before the search, which police described as "standard practice".

Police have also said the search of the lake in St George Park is "routine" and they have "no specific intelligence" about the area.

Rebecca, known as Becky, is described as white, 5ft 4in (1.6m) tall, with long red hair. It is thought she was wearing a blue puffa-style jacket on the day she went missing.

Despite hundreds of leaflets being handed out and several searches organised by members of the public, there has been no sign of the teenager.

Police have also used social media extensively in a bid to track her down using the Twitter hashtag #findbecky.

Officers claim the campaign has reached about two million people.

Missing Bristol teenager: Hopes starting to fade for missing Rebecca Watts

By Bath Chronicle  |  Posted: February 27, 2015

Police from three different forces are involved in the desperate search for missing Bristol teenager Rebecca Watts.

Sniffer dogs, mounted police, a helicopter and forensic teams are among those trying to find a clue as to the whereabouts of the 16 year old.

But more than a week after Becky seemingly vanished from her St George home, police admitted that they were no further forward in their bid to find her.

Last night there had still been no confirmed sightings of Becky, who left home without any money or a change of clothes but with her phone, laptop and tablet computers.

Her granddad, John Galsworthy, told the Bristol Post yesterday that hope was diminishing but the family were determined to stay positive in the search for her.

The 72-year-old, from Easton, said: "As you can imagine, as time goes by hope diminishes. But we are trying to keep positive with the hope it might come to a successful conclusion.

"It is hard, but we are really hoping she has just run away and that she will return safely. At least that would be something.

"Not knowing anything at all is the worst possibility. We are all doing what we can and looking after each other, and trying to remain positive."

Detective Inspector Richard Ocone, who is leading the investigation, said the Avon and Somerset force was being given help from South Wales and Wiltshire constabularies in their search yesterday.

Asked if they were any closer to finding out where Becky was, he responded: "No. We remain very concerned for her safety. We would like to make sure she is safe and return her to the family as soon as we possibly can."

He said possible sightings had been reported to police but no information had significantly taken officers forward in terms of finding Becky.

Det Insp Ocone said police were still in the process of trying to work out what happened on the morning of Becky's disappearance. She was last seen at her Crown Hill home.

"We think she left the house sometime between 11am and 12 noon," he said.

"There were other people within the house at the time (that she left). We are trying to establish at the moment if anyone in the house saw her leave.

"We don't believe that anyone actually saw her leave the house, but we are trying to work that out."

Det Insp Ocone said the others in the house were family members but would not confirm how many of them there were, or their identities.

Forensic investigations continued at the family home. Becky's dad Darren Galsworthy and his wife Anjie have moved out while police search it.

Sniffer dogs went in and bags of evidence were brought out yesterday.

Officers combed open space at nearby Troopers Hill yesterday, then moved on to nearby Netham Park.

Det Insp Ocone insisted the search was still "very much a missing person enquiry", adding: "We have nothing to show that Rebecca has come to any harm and clearly we would like to find her and return her as quickly as we can."

Becky is white, around 5ft 4in tall and slim. She has long, red or auburn hair and is very striking.

Anyone with any information can contact police on 101 quoting reference MP 591/15 or alternatively information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have also launched an online appeal using the hashtag #findbecky.
