That's how we came to be discussing it, when I said it was Whit Sunday and everyone said 'What's Whit Sunday?" Then I had to point out that today isn't actually Whit Sunday, but it would have been when I was young.  %77*

Sinday Schools were very involved in organising the children at Whitsun.

Another feature of my childhood was fixed summer holidays. Northern English towns each had a fixed fortnight for their holidays. Every business and most shops closed; the town was like a ghost town if you hadn't gone away on holiday. My local town had the same fortnight as Glasgow, so we often emcountered Glaswegians who liked the Lancashure coast; Blackpool and Morecambe in particular. It began with the railways, I believe, which allowed Glaswegians easy access to the English coast.

Whitsun

I remember you had to wear new clothes - if you didn't you get bird droppings on you. [was the saying]

Still, do the new clothes now - although it use to be summer dresses when the sun always seemed to shine

Church congregations would walk round their Parish Boundaries with banners and bands. Children would be dressed up, often in the same dress material and flowers would be carried by the girls. It was largely a north of England tradition, it seems.

More North West I think.

I think so too, along with the brass bands which we walked to. Food cane into the equation too. We ended the walk in a field where each child got fed. I hope the foodies won't be too disappointed by what we were given. A sandwich, a currant bun and a fairy cake as I recall, with a bottle of 'pop' and a straw.. Then we played around while the adults listened to the band and had a cup of tea..

A Field Day we had. We ran races that day.
