Is this the forensic examination of the contaminated samples which revealed inconclusive reults. ?

I would have thought so Stephen.
A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

It appears what I posted several months back is now coming to fruition.  The forensics are being reviewed using the very latest techniques.  I don't hold any misconceptions about the outcome however and unless most of PdL is dug up I don't see this case being solved any time soon.

£10 million spent so far, how much more?

That will depend on the next government she said with a touch of irony in her voice.
Have we run up against the law of diminishing returns yet do you think ?

The results were probably OK - it was the interpretation put on them that deemed them inconclusive.
I believe everything. And l believe nothing.
I suspect everyone. And l suspect no one.
I gather the facts, examine the clues... and before   you know it, the case is solved!"

The suggestion seems to be that there are results from the earlier digging in PDL.

Madeleine cops “back in Portugal”

Days after the British press buzzed with excitement over the possibility of a new Portuguese prosecutor “utterly determined” to get to the bottom of the seven-year mystery, three officers from Operation Grange have returned to Faro to continue their investigations into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

As the three-man team led by Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood arrived yesterday (Monday) afternoon, it is believed that first they will meet incoming PJ detectives in Faro, to discuss the next steps they hope to be allowed to take, and then they will travel up to Coimbra to receive analysis of the items recovered during the high-profile digging for clues that went ahead in Praia da Luz in the heat of the media spotlight in July.

According to Jornal de Notícias this morning (Tuesday), Scotland Yard has “seized” on the appointment of 49-year-old Sequeira “to exert pressure on the magistrate” who is described as having to be brought up to speed on hundreds of cases as she takes over from outgoing prosecutor Magalhães e Menezes.

A fifth international letter of request for house searches of the three Portuguese men Scotland Yard have in their sights has still to be authorised.

It is unlikely to get Sequeira’s rubber-stamp during this visit, suggests Correio da Manhã, stressing that the prosecutor’s immediate priorities are cases that involve prisoners.

Portuguese papers appear to be the only ones reporting on this morning’s news. After the rush of British focus on what they termed a “high flying prosecutor” at the weekend, there has been very little said about this week’s routine visit by the Brits whose investigation now is reported to have pushed Grange’s expenditure well over budget.

Jornal de Notícias talks of €9 million while the British press suggests expenses so far are more like 10 million pounds. That’s double Scotland Yard’s original estimates, and as many point out, follows on from many millions spent previously in the search. As CM concludes, “the costs of the investigation reopened on the orders of Prime Minister David Cameron are being criticised”.

Hmmm. Whether the searches had revealed something or nothing of significance, they would presumably still need to meet to share the results. If a JIT had been in place, then any such information (or lack thereof) could presumably have been shared earlier and without media speculation.

For the moment, it seems to be a meeting to share what has happened and to decide on future steps. In a national situation, such meetings would be internal and out of the tabloids' line of vision, I would have thought.

I really can't even begin to imagine why the Portuguese wouldn't want to form a JIT...

Update 2 - 76-year-old Briton to be extradited - possibly linked to McCann case

A 76-year-old British national, who was living in Gozo, will be extradited to the UK where he will serve time for the sexual assault of a girl aged under 13.

Roderick Macdonald, who was living in an apartment at Ta Cenc, consented to be extradited this morning before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli.

He was arrested by the Malta police in the whereabouts of Sannat yesterday.

Roderick Macdonald – who also used the surname Robinson – is also wanted by UK police who believe he can shed light on a paedophile ring possibly linked to the abduction of Madeleine McCann, according to UK tabloid newspapers Daily Mail and the Mirror.

Madeleine McCann has been missing since May 2007. She disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal as her parents Kate and Gerry were eating in a near-by restaurant

The Mirror reported that Mr Macdonald was in Algarve when the three-year-old vanished in 2007.Scotland Yard detectives chasing new leads in Praia da Luz where Madeleine went missing wanted to quiz him about paedophile rings in the area in 2007.

Police were investigating 18 possible linked break-ins at Algarve villas by a lone intruder from 2004 to 2010.The attacks stopped in 2010, at around the time Robinson was deported from Portugal to Australia for raping an eight-year-old girl there, the Mirror reported in May.

Within weeks of his release the former oil rig worker fled to Thailand but three months later he was deported back to Britain after Thai authorities found out about his past.

He moved to south coast resort Brighton where he was made to sign the sex offenders register but in 2012 he was given a suspended prison sentence in 2012 for abusing five- and seven-year-old girls in Brighton who bore a resemblance to Madeleine, the Mirror reported.

Mr Macdonald appeared in court in Malta this morning under arrest on the strength of a provisional arrest warrant issued by the courts after the UK judicial authorities requested his extradition "to serve a term of imprisonment of sexual assault of a female under 13 years of age".

A European Arrest Warrant had been issued against him on April 25, 2013, by the Lewes Crown Court in East Sussex

Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri prosecuted.

2010

Portuguese police arrested a British citizen, who had an international arrest warrant issued against him by Australian authorities, in the Algarve on March 31.According to the police, Roderick Robinson, aged 73, had been sought for many years for crimes of child molestation and aggravated sexual assault on children and is described as a dangerous sex offender.According to daily newspaper Correio da Manhã, the man was sought for sexual crimes against two girls, one in Australia and one in New Zealand, in 1998 and 1999 respectively. The British citizen was arrested at an Olhão campsite, where he had been staying for two months, a spokesman for the campsite told the Algarve Resident. The Portuguese police have no evidence suggesting that the man had committed any crimes in Portugal but are investigating his time in the Algarve and the reasons that brought him to the region.Roderick Robinson was heard at Évora Court on the day of his arrest and is now in preventative custody in Lisbon, awaiting extradition orders.According to Lusa news agency, the Australian authorities have been contacted by the Portuguese police who have requested documents to initiative the extradition process. A client at the campsite told Correio da Manhã that Roderick Robinson spent most of the time sun bathing and was never seen around children. Paulo Silvestre
