Madelaine Mccann: A Global Obsession Tue 19:00 18 Nov

http://www.channel5.com/shows/madelaine-mccann-a-global-obsession/episodes/madelaine-mccann-a-global-obsession

Documentary looking into the reason why the disappearance of Madeleine McCann continues to make headline news when hundreds of children go missing every year? Journalist Martin Frizell - who broke the story in the UK in 2007 - analyses the unprecedented campaign run by Madeleine's parents to keep their daughter in the public eye.

Interesting story, let's have a look at how the  Portugal resident reported it yesterday.

Madeleine: The “Global Obsession” will be aired on Tuesday 18 November on Ch5

Perfectly timed to coincide with new stories coming out of UK pointing to British expats now in the eye of investigators, a new documentary promising to retrace the final hours leading up to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is due to be aired on British television on Tuesday night at 7pm. Easily accessible to expats with or without satellite connections to UK, “A Global Obsession” will be presented by former journalist-turned-PR man-turned-lunchtime-TV-editor Martin Frizell. Frizell, currently in charge of ITV’s lunchtime show Loose Women, is due to bring “exclusive insight” on “how a family's worst nightmare became breaking news and turned into one of the biggest stories of all time”.

A press release on the programme airing on Channel 5 explains Frizell’s motivation. He asks: "So why is Madeleine McCann still on the front pages all these years on? Sure, the story sells newspapers, it boosts ratings but it's because of you. You want to know. Whether it's because of your cynicism of the McCanns and the way they've marketed their daughter, because it's the unsolved mystery, because perhaps it's every parent's worst nightmare or there but for the grace of God go I. Whatever the reason, you'd have to have a cold heart indeed not to wish closure on this for the McCanns and that story, the eventual discovery of Madeleine will be the biggest yet."

Frizell worked in broadcast journalism for 20 years - for GMTV, Reuters, Sky News and ITV - before turning to PR last year as an executive director at GolinHarris, and then returning to TV broadcasting 18 months later. Since joining the Loose Women show he has reportedly been on a cost-cutting cull, causing a certain degree of discontent. The Daily Mirror wrote in July: "Martin is blaming everyone but himself for the show going down the pan. Nobody has a clue what they’re doing since he took over.”

Tragically, the Channel 5 press release also shows how other parents of missing children have hardly benefited from media exposure at all. Daniel Entwistle, for example, was a seven year old who went out to buy sweets in 2003, and was never seen again. Father David said afterwards: "They got Daniel on camera going past the garage and that's the last sight of him." After the initial media interest, stories about Daniel were quietly dropped, and 11 years on he has still not been found, says the release. Madeleine McCann.

A Global Obsession will go on air days before Scotland Yard detectives are due back in Portugal to interview seven new suspects, among whom are understood to be two British men and a British woman.

They didn't report there was an appeal last year for Daniel, by Norfolk police. His father also made a appeal in 2012.

What a coincidence he disappeared the same date as Madeliene May 3rd.

Yes, quite unbelievable really.  Something else about the dates, Daniel was 7 and disappeared in 2003 while Madeleine was 3 and disappeared in 2007.

One of the last known sightings of Daniel Entwistle on 3rd May 2003 as he bought sweets in his local shop.

The personal way that the Mccanns checked every half hour, going into the apartment was infinitely better than that.

In the case of the thousands of other parents you mention, Benice, many of them were not within sight ... nor were they within hearing distance.  Many were a long way away, even chosing no doubt to go out elsewhere.

But you, Stephen have an obssessive hatred of The Mccanns for some reason.  Why dont you set up a group aimed at stopping all the thousands of parents that are truly irresponsible?

It's really about time you grew up sadie, and learn to differentiate between hatred and contempt.

As to you, you're obsession with supporting the parents of two parents who repeatedly neglected their children has been NOTED.

Madeleine – Two British expats set to be declared suspects
by Brendan de Beer, in News · 13-11-2014 17:56:00 · 0 Comments

Sources close to the investigation involving the search for missing British toddler Madeleine McCann have this week told The Portugal News two British expats are set to be declared formal suspects or arguidos. Another two Britons will be called in as witnesses.

http://theportugalnews.com/uploads/news/page6_22.jpg

Dates for questioning have been confirmed as being from November 24 to 28 at the PJ police headquarters in Faro.
Sources said the questioning of suspects was unlikely to stretch beyond this period.
The Portugal News revealed last week (6 November) that the Metropolitan Police were keen to speak to a number of British expats in the Algarve.
Any new requests will have to come in the form of a new international letter of request.

Sources said there are 11 people of interest, of which seven will be declared arguidos, and four will be heard as witnesses.
There are two Britons in each of these groups.
The two British witnesses are a couple (a man and a woman), but the two British suspects are said to be not related in any way and are both men.
The seven suspects do not include any of the four arguidos, all of whom are Portuguese nationals, questioned over the summer.

The Brits were all resident in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance and have remained here since, sources said.

The theory that Madeleine was abducted by someone passing through, remains a scenario which Portuguese police continue to believe to be among the most probable.

Portuguese police had earlier this summer ruled out Cape Verdean national Euclides Monteiro, who died in 2009, of any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
Police sources confirmed that Monteiro had been the primary reason behind the case’s reopening here in Portugal last October, but subsequent
investigations removed any suspicion over Monteiro.

The news of the exact dates for the questioning of new
suspects comes after the new Public Prosecutor in Portimão, Inês Sequeira, gave the green light to a fifth international Letter of Request received from British authorities
in August.

Police sources here meanwhile said that they had not yet received an official request from Scotland Yard to sit in on interrogations, but said this feature of the investigation was a mere formality.
British girl Madeleine McCann went missing from
an apartment in the Ocean Club resort, Praia da Luz in May 2007, then aged three, sparking an unprecedented
international hunt which has lost little impetus in the more than seven years since her
disappearance.

This continued practise by the Brit press of referring to arguidos as official suspects must cease. Most people who have followed this case understand that the law changed in 2007 which gives certain rights to anyone being questioned by police.  Arguido status can be invoked by anyone who is aware that are to be questioned by police, it is a right and not an indicator of guilt.

The latest news is that Redwood and his merry men are on their way back to Luz to destroy the Christmas atmosphere just as they did in the summer.  If you consider the number of people who are being questioned most if not all of them have had nothing to do with Madeleine but the fact that they are being hauled in for questioning at all will have adverse consequences for them in their own community.

it can only have an adverse affect if their community think they are involved and think SY are on the right track

I agree. I also believe that if the community knew who was responsible for any criminality they would not protect the person/s.

Not sure what you mean. If it concerns the bolded part in your post, she was quoting Frizell.

I hadn't realised that she's now writing for the Portugal Resident.

I suppose anyone interested could ask her here as she's a member.

I wouldn't lump everyone in the same basket.

I have no problem with Brendan. He seems to be professional and neutral as a journalist should be.

ETA: To avoid confusion, Brendan writes for the Portugal News (and freelances for the Guardian).

Sorry, my mistake. It is a strange remark for Frizell to have made in the current circumstances.

I find it interesting though that SY are still looking at the burglary gone wrong theory.

Why would 3 people who know the area really well want to burglarise on their own doorstep, and not only that, why end of April/beginning of May, when it was still all very quiet and not a lot of people milling about. So surely their presence hanging around apartments would have been noted...?

Wouldnt they be better of burglarising away from their area and choose a time when its really busy and full of tourists, tourists with money....I am sure a lot of people who choose to go out of season do so because its cheaper to do so would that indicate they are less likely to be stashing jewellery, expensive cameras, and laptops in their apartments for anyone to steal?

I just find it all odd that 3 burglars would be bothered with slim pickings and the chance of being seen as the streets were not exactly full of people milling about.

All very odd.......
