Fabulous news.

Thank you jassi

I think that a new thread would be in order for this, but can't get any of the reports from 'Newsnow Madeleine McCann' to open properly.  Can anyone manage that please and post the news up as a new topic?  TY

I wondered what that gnashing sound was.  Now I know it was the sound of thousands of sceptics chewing on the carpet in rage and despair.  @)(++(*.

No, that gnashing sound was probably people who are real victims of crimes commited in this country, who do not want their hard earned cash wasted on parents who couldn't be bothered with their children at  evening meal times in another country. I am surprised the PJ even allowed them to interfere/investigate. Naming people who MAY be is a gross miscarriage of justice IMO. They could not possibly get a fair trial. and where would this trial take place? yes the poor portuguese will have to cough up and pay for all that...

It is a Portuguese Case you know, as some are so fond of reminding us.  But they aren't very good at it, so Scotland Yard is helping them out in the recovery of a British Citizen abducted abroad.

Who knows what nationality the abductor has.  Crimes are prosecuted in the country in which they happen.  This is quite normal.

Yes SY are very good at it.  Any minute now  even as we type...they have suspects 13 I believe last count.

Great move forward I agree- if it were true and the suspects were not just names handed over to keep the abductor theory in the loop.

ah well, never mind SY are the best of the best...(Giggles)

Some of the language that has been used recently towards members and moderators is totally unacceptable and has resulted in at least one temporary ban. Regular posters are very well aware of the forum rules so I shouldn't need to have to keep reminding of them. Everyone is entitled to voice their opinion here but it must be done respectfully, there can be no exceptions.

A challenge, let's try and get through today without the need for any moderation. TY

This one might seem a bit of a stretch at first, but think it through.

A seemingly respected army officer, Nikos Metaxas, was sentenced to 7 terms of life imprisonment for abducting and killing 5 foreign women, plus two children.

I've thought it through and cannot see how this news article pertains in any way to the latest news on the search for Madeleine McCann.  Perhaps you could explain?

20 Oct 2019, 22:30Updated: 20 Oct 2019, 22:37

SCOTLAND Yard’s hunt for Madeleine McCann is being led by a top murder cop already battling London’s knife crime epidemic, The Sun can reveal.

Det Chief Insp Mark Cranwell has recently been put in part-time charge of Operation Grange, which has cost taxpayers £12 MILLION to date.
He runs a tiny four-cop team trying to crack a case the Met has been investigating for EIGHT years.

So far it has not made a single arrest - yet was still granted another £300,000 by the Home Office in June.

Meanwhile police are trying desperately to turn back the tide on knife crime in the capital.

Shock figures showed blade offences had soared by seven per cent in the year to June, a record high.

DCI Cranwell is playing a leading role in trying to combat it - making a series of appeals to the public in a raft of recent teenage murders.

RECORD HIGH BLADE OFFENCES
On Tuesday he asked witnesses to come forward over the fatal stabbing of Ben Lines, 20, in Bexley, South East London, on Sunday.

Meanwhile a freedom of information request shows the Operation Grange team he leads is made up of four full-time detectives, including three constables and one sergeant.

The costs are being covered by Special Grant funding from the Home Office, usually available to police forces when they face significant or exceptional costs.

The £12million total spent already is more than double the £5million promised by David Cameron when Operation Grange was launched in May 2011. The task force at its height was 37-strong.

Tens of thousands of pounds have been spent on flights to Portugal and to investigate other sightings around the globe.

The Met said: “As of 30 September 2019, there are four officers working full time on Operation Grange; one Detective Sergeant, and three Detective Constables.

“The Senior Investigating Officer is Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Mark Cranwell, who does not work full time on the investigation.

“DCI Cranwell reports to Commander Stuart Cundy from the Met’s Specialist Crime command, who has chief officer responsibility for Operation Grange.”

Operation Grange, which was launched in 2011 to try find Madeleine McCann, has so far cost taxpayers £12million

Madeleine McCann police quiz British expat barmaid over her German ex-boyfriend

Madeleine McCann police quiz British expat barmaid over her German ex-boyfriend

Police probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have quizzed a British barmaid about her German ex-boyfriend.

Carol Hickman, 59, was asked for information on Michael Jehle, 51, who lives near Praia da Luz – where Maddie, three, vanished in 2007.

But Mr Jehle insisted to the Sunday Mirror: “I don’t know about Maddie. Police know where I live.”

Barmaid Carol Hickman told of her shock today.

Expat Carol – who works at Kelly’s Bar just 450 metres from where Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007 – said two plain-clothed officers acting for Scotland Yard asked about the German decorator.

They wanted phone numbers and any Facebook contact.

The Sunday Mirror has learned another of his exes was quizzed in 2007 – and had her freezer searched.

As the mystery deepened yesterday, baffled Carol, 59, described Mr Jehle as “a friendly hippy”.

And when our team tracked him down he said he had nothing to hide.

Carol said officers from the Portuguese Judicial Police were trying to trace her ex and another of his old flames, a German woman.

Carol, 59, who has lived on the Algarve since 1997, told us: “They came into the bar and said ‘You can thank Her Majesty for this visit’.

"That’s when I knew they were from Scotland Yard. They asked if I could remember May 3, 2007.

“Of course I remember. I was in the bar and we had a call from friends saying a little girl had vanished. We went out on the search and we were out all night.”

Carol said the police visited her two weeks ago – first at the bar, followed by an interview at her home.

She went on: “They were asking about Madeleine and interested in my German ex-boyfriend.

"We were in an 18-month relationship, but at the time of Maddie’s disappearance hadn’t been together for years.

“There’s no reason to suspect him at all. I’m amazed I’m being asked about him. He was a friendly hippy.

"I just find it so strange, the whole thing. The police asked if I had any contact numbers or if I was friends on Facebook, but I’m not.”

It is the second time Kelly’s Bar – a four-minute walk from the McCanns’ apartment – has been mentioned in the investigation.

On the night Madeleine vanished Martin Smith, from Co Louth, Ireland, was there with his family.

As they left they saw a man carrying a small blonde girl who they believe to be Madeleine.

Tonight, the memory remained vivid as Martin told the Sunday Mirror: “I’d say it was definitely the child.

"I’d say it definitely had to be. The place was very quiet at that time of year so I’d say it was definitely the child.”

The latest developments come as it is revealed for the first time that Scotland Yard detectives visited Portugal five times in 2019.

There is nothing to suggest Mr Jehle or the German woman are considered suspects.

It is thought they could help police obtain new information to help in the search.

Mr Jehle has been in Portugal since 1995 and now lives in Monte Novo, Bensafrim, 20 miles from Praia da Luz.

When the Mirror traced him he had no idea why officers had been talking to Carol. Mr Jehle said: “I don’t know anything about Maddie McCann.

“I lived in Praia da Luz for many years, then I moved. I don’t know why the police [are asking about Maddie].

"Everybody knows me, about three months ago people called me and said police were looking for me.

“They were looking for me for another reason. I had to go to court because I had a problem with a friend. This was nothing to do [with Maddie].

“[The police] know where I live, they have my phone number, they can call me.

"I was with Carol in 2004. It was only for one year. She works in Kelly’s Bar, she’s still a good friend of mine.

"I have another girlfriend now. I have had many girlfriends.”

In 2007 another of Mr Jehle’s ex-partners told how she was quizzed by police.

She said then: “Six police, some British, entered my apartment. They told my boyfriend not to move while they looked under the bed.”

On a second visit they reportedly checked her freezer, cupboards and pantry.

She said police officers told her: “We are looking for Madeleine.”

BBC BREAKING NEWS

A 43-year-old German prisoner who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Police believe he was in the area where the three-year-old was last seen in May 2007.
They are appealing for information about the van and the suspect's other vehicle, a Jaguar.
The man transferred it to someone else's name the day after she vanished.
"Someone out there knows a lot more than they're letting on,"said DCI Mark Cranwell, who's leading the Met inquiry.
The force said it remained a "missing persons" investigation because it doesn't have "definitive evidence" as to whether Madeleine is alive or not.
However, German investigators at the Federal Criminal Police Office, the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), have classed it as a "murder inquiry".

Scotland Yard said the German authorities had taken the lead on this aspect of the case because the German suspect was in custody in their country.
Detectives said he was in jail for an "unrelated matter" and had "previous convictions", but they declined to supply more details.
'Critical' information
An appeal on German television was broadcast this evening at 19:15 BST.
DCI Cranwell said the prisoner, then aged 30, frequented the Algarve between 1995 and 2007, staying for "days upon end" in his camper van and living a "transient lifestyle".
He was in the Praia de Luz area where the McCann family was staying when she disappeared and received a phone call at 7.32pm, which ended at 8.02pm.
Police have released details of the suspect's phone number and the number he dialled saying any information about them could be "critical" to the inquiry.
They also want the person who called the suspect to come forward.
"They're a key witness and we urge them to get in touch," said DCI Cranwell.
"Some people will know the man we're describing today... you may be aware of some of the things he's done," he said.
"He may have confided in you about the disappearance of Madeleine.
"More than 13 years have passed and your loyalties may have changed," he added.
"Now is the time to come forward."
Police said the suspect was one of 600 people that detectives on the inquiry, known as Operation Grange, originally looked at, though he had not been a suspect.
After an appeal in 2017, "significant" fresh information about him was provided.
Since then, Met detectives have carried out "extensive inquiries" in Portugal and Germany in order to gather more details about him.
Scotland Yard said they were trying to "prove or disprove" his involvement in the case and retained an "open mind".
