The alternatives are that this accusation of Russian involvement has been totally invented (by the numerous agencies who apparently normally squabble with each other all the time) or that reality lies somewhere in between.

However, the Americans trying to play the  innocent doesn't really wash, as they have undeniably tried to interfere in other countries elections/politics, via computer hacking and other means.
Namely, if the Russians did it, it wouldn't be unique to  them.
