RBL on Andrew Marr this morning:

“I wasn’t happy with the way our process was being run, I’ll be honest, I don’t think we were dealing with complaints quickly enough and I think that’s quite clear, I’ve been quite vocal about that,” she said. “I spoke to Jeremy about it, I spoke to the various members of the team, I spoke to various members of the NEC (national executive committee) about that.”

Asked if Mr Corbyn bore personal responsibility, she said: “He does and he’s apologised.

“I think any Labour politician that leads the Labour Party should apologise again for what has happened because it has been unacceptable.”

Well she’s changed her tune!  Does that mean she’s downgraded Mr C from 10/10 to 9/10 now?  What a massive hypocrite.

It’s not the manager out on the football pitch playing the game and losing but, ultimately, he takes the blame. The same is true with political parties.

One snapshot of how the anti-semitism claims were skewed by the media. We were told on Panorama that one Labour member had posted online something that was considered [ censored word]emitic. The member was suspended from the party while under investigation. It was stated that no action was taken....which was, technically true, as she resigned from the party as soon as she was informed that she was under investigation. How many more of the claims presented where similar who knows. That [ censored word]emitism exists in both parties is undeniable, that Corbyn has instigated a full scale investigation into the matter and taken steps to stamp it out while Johnson, and May before him, have done absolutely nothing is also undeniable.

If all you want is someone who looks good then Trudeau is certainly your man.

I used to think so----until he grew that beard!

It’s going to look really bad for Labour IMO if, out of a selection of 4 women and a man for the job of leader, they choose the man!

Why...if he’s the best person for the job ?

Alistair Campbell: OK. Another hypothetical. If he were to lose another election, is it possible for him (Corbyn) to stay on?

John McDonnell: I can't see... I think it is the same for my own personal position, I can't see so. What we'd do is as the tradition, which is have an election for a new leader. I'm still of the view now that whoever comes after Jeremy has got to be a woman. We've got to have a woman leader. If you look at the new youngsters that have come through, they are fantastic.

AC: I get that, on one level... but tell me why it has to be a woman if there might be men there that people could look at and say, “That is the next prime minister”?

JM: OK. On these equality issues you work on the basis that if there are two people that are roughly the same then actually what you need to do is discriminate in favour of those groups that have been discriminated against in the past.

AC: I think people get that for most jobs, but when you talk about leading the party or prime minister?

JM: I think we are in that situation now where we've got such a range of talented women in the shadow cabinet that it’s obvious it’s going to be a woman next time.

AC: So, it’s Emily Thornberry, Rebecca Long-Bailey...

JM: There is a whole range of women. Angela Rayner... There is a whole range of women and it's fantastic.

Well yes John, a whole “bunch” of fantastic women but none is likely to be the next Labour leader, despite Labour’s championing of equality and positive discrimination.  If Keir wins, Labour will be the only major political party never to have had a female at the helm.  How peculiar...

Fair enough. However, my own feeling (for what it's worth) is that it doesn't matter whether the new leader is a man or a woman, so long as he or she is a much better leader than Corbyn.

If Labour doesn't get a female leader this time, I'm sure it will eventually.

I agree, it’s just supremely ironic in my view that the supposedly most progressive party and champion of equal opps should itself always opt for the white male leader option.

Historically Labour has had almost double the number of female MPs of the Conservatives. Further there wasn’t one female in the final selection for their leadership and Theresa May was only PM because there was no one in the end standing against her. BTW when was the last leader of the Conservative party from an ethnic minority?

The Conservatives have had two female leaders, both of whom have been prime minister.  Labour has never had a female leader and doesn’t look likely to this time despite four-fifths of the candidates running being female.  Not only that, but the SNP, the DUP, the Liberals and the Greens have all had female leaders.  The Tories have yet to elect a leader from an ethnic minority but both the Chancellor and the Home Secretary are,and it wouldn’t surprise me if they eventually beat Labour on that score as well.  Also, this is the gayest government ever, with the highest percentage of LGBT members of parliament.  As I say, it’s all rather ironic.

And it’s not just me saying it -

Harriet Harman: why there has never been a female Labour leader – and why the time is now
The Labour leader writes powerfully about the party's alleged "problem with women"
BY HARRIET HARMAN

Harriet HarmanCOURTESY

The first thing to say is that there should have been. It’s embarrassing and wrong that the party that regards itself as the party of equality, the party that has more women MPs than all the other parties put together, has nonetheless never had a woman leader and the Conservative party has had two.

Perhaps it’s because the women in the Labour Party have consciously challenged the structures of the party and the way it works, striving to change the way we do politics. We’ve been a subversive, critical force - we wanted half the constituencies that we were going to win to be set aside for women. That was bitterly opposed by many of the men in the party. We insisted that there must be three allocated places on the shadow cabinet for women – this was when there was an all-male Tory cabinet and all bar one in Labour’s shadow cabinet were men.

"It’s beginning to look like Labour has a problem with women"
That doesn’t win you any friends because the men think the women are taking the places that they could have had. This means we’re seen as criticising the party hierarchy rather than being part of it. Whereas Conservative women like Margaret Thatcher weren’t seen as subversive within their own party. She wasn't saying that she wanted to turn this party upside down. She wasn’t saying, 'it’s been a party of men, I’m going to make it a party where women and men share power on equal terms.' She was about succeeding within the party power structure as it was, about beating the men at their own game, on their terms. She wouldn’t change the rules to make the party more women-friendly. She didn’t believe in that.

If you argue for positive action, which the women’s movement in the Labour Party has, then that will be and has been resisted. If you are always pushing at barriers, you’re a productive force, but not necessarily a popular one. Those leading that charge can come to be considered too unpopular for the top job. That is an explanation, but it’s not an excuse. There’s no justification for not having a woman leader. We’ve had a party for 100 years, we regard ourselves as the party of equality - next time it’s got to be a woman.

Most people in the party realise that it’s beginning to look like Labour has a problem with women, that we have to be led by a man, that none of the women in the party are good enough to lead. But nobody believes that – 45% of our MPs are women - and look at our shadow cabinet today which is 50% men and 50% women, or the previous shadow cabinets; you’ll see Labour has a big choice of exceptional women. It’s not as if there’s no women in the pool to be the next leader.

"Men within the party should walk the talk by going for deputy and supporting a woman for leader"
The party needs to think about how it will look if, more than 100 years after the party was formed, it hasn’t ever had a woman leader. It always seems to be a man’s turn. The only way we’re going to put it right is that the next time that we have a contest for leader is to decide that, although we have many very brilliant men, we have lots of brilliant women too and this time it’s going to be a woman that wins the top job and the man can be deputy. There needs to be a shift in consciousness that next time the job must go to a woman, so the women who step forward know that they will receive support. Men within the party need to recognise that, if they are to be champions of gender equality, and supporters of the feminist cause, they should walk the talk by going for deputy and supporting a woman for leader. That is the challenge for men in the party.

We’re on the right side of history and many of the changes that we’ve battled for, we’ve achieved. The Women’s Movement is the most successful political movement of my lifetime in terms of social and economic change. Women are still change-makers and that is a battle. Each generation needs to take it forward. Things are much better in my generation than they were for my mother, and they’re better for my daughter’s generation, but we still have more progress to make. Each generation has to carry the torch.

Great news ! RLB is now overtaking KS in the leadership polls so Labour may be about to have their first leader ever....and it looks as if she’ll be carrying the socialist baton forward....so goodnew all round  ?{)(**

I really think leaders should be elected on the basis that they'd be good in the job, it shouldn't matter in the slightest what colour skin they have or what is or isn't between their legs.

I am strongly opposed to all this pandering to the politically correct nonsense.

That being said, I think history shows that the best world leaders are undoubtedly white & male, just look at Trump, Hitler & Stalin.
I stand with Putin. Glory to Mother Putin.
