Police in Malaysia are looking for a 15-year-old girl with an Irish passport who disappeared from her hotel bedroom at the weekend.

Nóra Quoirin’s father found she was missing from her room at the Dusun Hotel, in a nature reserve near Seremban, 63 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday morning, her family said. The window had been left open.

Her family are being supported by the Lucie Blackman Trust, a British charity. Her aunt, Aisling Agnew, said in a statement released by the trust that they considered her disappearance to be a criminal matter.

Ms Agnew, from Belfast, said: “Nóra’s parents and relatives in Ireland and France are distraught by her disappearance. Nóra is a child with special needs and has learning and developmental disabilities which make her especially vulnerable and we fear for her safety.

“Nóra would not know how to get help and would never leave her family voluntarily. We now consider this a criminal matter. We are appealing to everyone to assist the local police in any way they can and to pass on any information that would help locate our beloved Nóra without delay.”

Nóra’s parents are an Irish-French couple who have been living in London for 20 years, the trust said.

Che Zakaria Bin Othman, the deputy police chief for Negeri Sembilan state, said: “So far, there’s no indication of foul play; however, the investigation is still ongoing.”

He said that police had met Nóra’s family and Irish and French embassy officials on Sunday and yesterday.

“All officials are still up there at the hotel, we discussed with them all, and God willing, we will continue the search until it is successful,” he said.

The Lucie Blackman Trust insisted the family had been told that police were treating Nóra’s disappearance as a criminal matter.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the organisation said: “Contrary to several reports that police are NOT treating Nóra’s disappearance as an abduction, the family have been told directly by police that they are treating it as both an abduction and missing persons case.”

Nora Quoirin cops probe sighting of ‘white woman’ swimming in Malaysian jungle river - as scent found by sniffer dogs mysteriously vanishes
A "WHITE woman" has reportedly been seen swimming in a Malaysian jungle river where cops are searching for missing Brit Nora Quoirin.

Sniffer dogs trying to track down the 15-year-old London girl initially picked up her scent within 4,000 feet of the remote resort she disappeared from at the weekend, but there's no trace of her beyond that range, say police.

Sky News said that cops are investigating reports that the teen might have been spotted – as a “white woman” was apparently seen swimming in a river not far away, on Sunday afternoon.

Police have only received this information in the past few hours and are currently following it up, but are said to be unsure as to whether the eyewitness's account is correct.

Negeri Sembilan police chief Mohamad Mat Yusop told reporters today: "We will do our very best. We will not give up hope. We believe that she didn't go far and that she had lost her way."

Mohamad said rescuers earlier today had repeated their search around the perimeter of the Dusun hill resort Nora had been staying with her family, because they believed she was still within the vicinity.

He said they would now focus on the foothill of the jungle resort near a river, based on the assumption that she would be in a weak state and could head downhill to find water and food.

Nora’s family said they discovered her missing from her bedroom at the Dusun eco-resort in southern Negeri Sembilan state on Sunday morning with the window left open.

More than 170 people have been involved in the search operation, with a helicopter, sniffer dogs and local villagers aiding in the expanded comb through the dense jungle, Mohamad said, adding that the search would continue through the night.

Local indigenous people, Orang Asli, are also helping to look for the girl.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

The parents of Nora Quoirin, who has learning and developmental disabilities, are an Irish-French couple who've lived in London for about 20 years, according to the Lucie Blackman Trust, a British charity support people during a crisis overseas.

In a statement, they said: "We are especially worried because Nora has learning and developmental disabilities and is not like other 15 year olds.

"She looks younger, she is not capable of taking care of herself and she won't understand what is going on.

"She never goes anywhere by herself. We have no reason to believe she wandered off and is lost."

Nora's relatives have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to fund the search.

It says: "Her parents and our families in Ireland and France are distraught by her disappearance.

"Nora is a child with special needs... which make her especially vulnerable and we fear for her safety.

"Nora would not know how to get help and would never leave her family voluntarily.

"Local police now consider this a criminal matter and are treating it as an abduction."

The total raised has surpassed the £6,000 target, with donors giving nearly £23,000 to help find her.

The family are convinced it is a criminal matter but local police initially said there were no signs of foul play.

However they later revised their opinion saying that Nora had been “taken” but not “abducted”.

RESORT STAFF 'PRAYING HARD'

Haanim Bamadhaj, a resort spokesman, said the Dusun management is baffled by Nora's disappearance.

Resort staff and even some guests had earlier joined in the search.

She said: "Our resort has been operating for 10 years and we have never even been robbed. We are doing our very best and praying hard."

Following Nora's disappearance, she said some guests had cancelled their bookings and that the resort had provided full refunds. Access to the site has been blocked due to the search operation.

Villagers who joined in the search expressed concern over the missing girl's fate.

Bali anak Akau said: "This particular jungle, for outsiders, they don't know how to navigate, they get lost. Natives like me, we are used to this jungle."

A member of staff at the hotel told The Sun Online there is "no way of knowing" if the window was opened from the outside or the inside of Nora's room. The area is not covered by CCTV.

'TRIP OF A LIFETIME'

The teen arrived on Saturday with her parents and two siblings at Dunsun - in a nature reserve near Seremban, 39 miles south of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

It was the start of a two-week "trip of a lifetime" with her mum, dad and two siblings, a family friend said.

Nora's mum Meabh is originally from Belfast while her father is French - with her parents having lived in London for around 20 years.

Matthew Searle, CEO of the Lucie Blackman Trust, said: "This is a very vulnerable young girl missing in a remote location.

Matthew Searle, Lucie Blackman Trust
"She has been missing for over 24 hours now, and it is imperative that every resource available is deployed to search for her.

"It is possible she has been seen or taken in by somebody and is unable to communicate, so we urge everyone who can to share our appeal poster and social media appeals.

"Sadly it is also possible that Nóra has been the victim of serious crime – we urge anyone with any information to come forward."

REMOTE RESERVE

The Dusun is a 12-acre orchard resort next to the Berembun Forest Reserve - 4,000 acres of protected virgin forest rising to 3,900 feet.

The forest has wild boar, deer, giant millipedes, monkeys and leeches, according to the resort's website.

There are two small villages near the resort where the majority of residents work in farming of the local land.

Nora is understood to have been travelling on an Irish passport.

A spokesman for Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs said: "We are aware of the case and providing consular assistance."

I hope sincerely that this girl is recovered safe and well soon.  Her family however are absolutely convinced she would not wake and wander, even though she is 15.

World of difference, the girl in question is at least 12 yrs older.Still get Jimbo his minutes of fame again.
Why does her age make the two cases a world apart?  Both sets of parents are convinced their children were abducted.

He’s right, there are definite similarities.

Looks like the Malaysian Police won't make the same mistakes as the PJ by not accepting abduction from the bedroom as a foregone conclusion.  They appear to think the girl went out on her own and either got lost or was then abducted.

And so it begins, a comment in the Times I have just read:

“Her aunt has now - after a week - shared it publicly in an interview. Everyone's natural instinct is to feel very worried and compassionate for this family, but there is a lot about the case that feels very staged. I hope to be proved wrong”.

The similarities get stronger by the day.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The family of Nóra Quoirin, 15, whose mother Meabh is from Belfast and whose father Sebastien is French, have today released the following statement.

“Nóra is a very special person. She is fun, funny, and extremely loving. With her family, she is very affectionate - family is her whole world and she loves to play games, like Cat Bingo, with us. She likes to tell us silly jokes and wear clever, colourful t-shirts. She is not like other teenagers. She is not independent and does not go anywhere alone. Nóra was born with Holoprosencephaly; this means that she has a smaller brain. All her life she has spent a lot of time in hospital. When she was born, she needed operations to help her breathing. She has specialists that monitor her growth, her physical abilities and her strength, and especially her mental capacity. Nóra has always needed dedicated specialist educational provision, and now attends a school for children and young people with learning and communication difficulties.
Nóra and her family are bi-lingual and bi-cultural. Nóra is very proud that she can speak French as well as English. But her verbal communication is limited. Nóra can read like a young child, but she cannot write more than a few words. She has a good memory but she cannot understand anything conceptual. She is unable to do maths and so things like money are impossible to manage. She cannot make or receive phone calls independently. She can wash and dress herself, though she cannot manage buttons, and struggles to wash her hair. At school, she is learning to ride a bicycle properly. Nóra likes to walk with her family, but her balance is limited and she struggles with coordination. She has been to Asia, and many European countries before, and has never wandered off or got lost. Nóra is very sensitive. Outside the family, Nóra is very shy and can be quite anxious. Every night, her special time is for cuddles and a night-time story with her Mum. And she was extremely excited about the family holiday in Malaysia.”

That is the end of the statement. The family would again like to take this opportunity to express their sincere thanks to the Royal Malaysian Police, and all those searching for Nóra. Some of these people have been working all day, every day and the family cannot express their gratitude enough.

They would do the child a grave disservice if they did not investigate ALL possibilities. IMO

No it doesn’t.  It reads like an extremely heartfelt description of their much loved and missing child.

The Dusun resort in Malaysia from which Nora Quoinn disappeared is fascinating. It is pretty small with guests (up to 20 adults) staying in just 6 or maybe 7 houses. Children stay free. The houses are separated as peace and quiet is what's on offer. Some of the houses seem less secure than others by our standatds

The jungle is a 20 minute walk away and there's a fee to enter it.
