Introducing Yuki, the forum moderator.

Bloody hell, John, how lovely is Yuki? We had a pure white cat once, called Harley, and he was deaf. Got his head stuck in the chimney after a starling nest. I used to have to put sun block on his ears.

You do Andy and I need to learn how to post images ... can anyone help?

There are a couple of ways you can post pictures to the site.

1.  You can simply attach the file straight from your computer.  Click on 'Attachments and other option' at the bottom of the text box and select the file from your computer.

2. If you go to  www.imgur.com   you can upload your photos to a host site which will provide you with a url.  All you have to do is to post that url in the dialogue box.

Cute pets, thanks for sharing! I used to have cats, not anymore, we travel too much to have pets.
Something else - John, does your Dell-cabinet rattle?! I used to have the same, and it was so noisy, it practically drove me insane! I read some about it online, and others had the same problem. I have and Amtec now - silent as an itty-bitty kitty cat.  8(0(* I could take a picture of it and post here as a sort of pet, but you“d all see the mess on my table, sooo.  8(>((

I had 2 cats originally, Molly and Lamby, Molly got liver failure and died and then Lamby went under a car, 2 days later Kitten was on the doorstep pregnant, a tennent moved and never took her, she's been outside for 2 months, so I got her. Zippy is one of her kittens, my aunty and uncle had 2 and a friend another 1! I think Padgate was the father of one, they're all neutered now, I have another one Toby. They're all strays!

We have always had cats on the farm, too many at times but over the last few years their numbers decreased to the point where we offered a home to several cats which had arrived at the local cat rescue.  Last year I was on the look out for a black and white cat and so got my eye on one but it was feral. We have never had feral cats on the farm so this was a challenge.  When I got her home I put her in a large barn but she dug her way out gouging a hole under a door. She actually scratched concrete away to get out.  I never saw her again for two weeks, I assumed she had scampered. When she did appear she spent the next 6 months getting closer to the house. All I could do was to leave food out for her. Eventually I was getting closer to her and could almost touch her at feeding time. Once I actually picked her up but she nearly took my finger off.

The turning point came a few weeks later when I found her lying in the garden one morning obviously injured and in pain, she had been run over. Had she gone off and hid as cats do she would have perished but she had the good sense to look for help.  I put her in the cat travel box and took her to the vet where she had surgery for a broken back leg.  It was touch and go and the vet had to put a pin in the leg joint. She spent two weeks in a wire box at the clinic and when she came back spent 4 weeks in the house.  She is a completely changed cat now but still very nervous.  She will jump up and sit on my knee now no problem.  She does not associate with the other cats though.

Feral cats can be domesticated but they are hard work.  I will post a photo of her later.

I was out on my pushbike a few years ago on a country lane and this really skinny feral cat stood in front of me and screetched her head off and wouldn't stop. I got off and followed her with her screetching and looking back to make sure I was following. She took me behind a barn with a wood pile and to her litter of 3 very underfed kittens.

I am sure the mum knew they were starving to death and was getting help ... we took them home and slowly got them back to health. Although very young they were scared to death and vicious and it took about two weeks to get them to come out from under the furniture. After about a month two of them became real pussycats but one remained very violent!

They all lived pretty happy lifes and I will never forget their mum getting help for her starving kittens.  8)-)))

Harvey has lovely colouring and a shaggy coat.  Do you breed more of the long haired GSD's than the smooth haired?

The sire we use is a shortish haired champion GSD in France and our breeding bitches are long haired so the litter normally has a mixture of both short and long haired .... the last litter had 3 long and 2 short ... 4 of them are the normal black and tan and the 5th is jet black all over! It's like a jamboree bag ... you never know what ya gonna get!

Harvey isn't involved in anything and just lazies around all day waiting for food and attention ... he doesn't mind which!  8)-)))

Aww, I love all these pictures. John, your feral was lucky to have you, it's almost impossible to domesticate ferals, often when injured they hide to avoid predation, I'm so glad you found her and she's recovering, cats are so worth the time and effort invested in them. I've never had dogs before, it's not possible with 4 cats and I have arthritis, so long walks are out the question.

My last cat died last year but for a while he lived with eight german sheps and it never bothered him at all and they would never have hurt him. They would chase him a bit if he was out in the open but never with evil intent  .... sometimes Charlie would actually  sleep on one of the dogs! Ironically he was killed by the next doors vicious dog!

That mutt dog is the only animal I could happily have shot .... the most vicious nasty dog I have ever known. Glad we don't live next door to him anymore .... hopefully he has died!

Padgate, my old cat, makes me laugh, 80% of the time, he hobbles about like a good 'un. Today, I looks out the window to see him race past like he's ablaze chasing a kitten. I even went outside to make sure it was him! He's now pretending to be knackered on the sofa!

I have a dog that I called 'Bullseye' He is a Staffordshire Bull terrier and has a great disposition. I named him after the dog in the musical 'Oliver' and he also has a dark patch over his right eye. He is a lovely dog and very playful. However, I am away from home alot and he has to stay with my family. He get's very lonely when I am away and I was wondering whether to get him a playmate to keep him company and stop him annoying my family, especially in the evening when everyone is tired.
Any suggestions? >@@(*&)

Has Bullseye got lots of toys and puzzle toys (like the ones you can put biscuits in and they have to fathom how to get them out so they can eat them)?
Is there a trustworthy dog sitter/walker in your area?
Another dog is a good idea but might 'double trouble' until they integrate, having said that with 4 cats, I'd say the more the merrier! But mine don't really like each other most of the time  @)(++(* They have their own zones!

Hi Joanne,
Yes he has lots of toys, such as rubber rings and things. He loves to play with them. I do have a dog-walker so that's OK. I understand your point about 'double-trouble' Bullseye can be quite a handful at times so two of them might be just too much. He is on a diet as my wife overfeeds him when I am away and I return to an obese, lazy dog lying on my bed farting and panting. So I have been strict with him (and my wife) about what he is allowed to eat. He looks much better and fitter now. I think I will put together a regime where he is taken for a walk at precise times each day and meets up with other dogs.

Thank you Joanne :-) 8((()*/

The settee 'Berlin Wall' (a cushion) has gone up. Padgate and Toby don't get on, well Toby doesn't get on with Pad, he doesn't care but they both want half the settee.
Bit like this-:

Fed up with the state of the house, Harold decides to split the house into two parts, one for him and one for Albert.

Padgate is such a great name for a cat ...... sounds like they rule the roost over there Jo! Are they house cats Jo or do they have a domain outside?

Go out! Are you mad?!
Zippy goes about a foot away from the door and if I shut it, she gets scared. Padgate did live outside for a number of years but hasn't for about a year. I think he's quite an old mog. Toby likes going outside. Kitten lived outside for 2 months when she was abandoned by her owner and then came here to have kittens, she goes out and then jumps at the door handle to come in, she's just not quite heavy enough to pull the handle all the way down.

I've been pushing poison blocks down rat holes this morning (I HATE doing it, but we really are getting over-run) and when I went past a bit later the little b....rs had pushed them back out again. I'm impressed, but worried.

Kitten's a good catcher, I'll ask her her rates, it's either by rat or by hour!
My Dads had a problem with rats coming in from next door via the cellar, he ended up getting pest control in, they're a pain because the pack animals. Didn't they used to use warfarin at one bit or was my granddad making it up when he told me!

My father in law's on warfarin, and the stuff in these blocks (bromadiolone) works in the same way, as an anti-coagulant. Apparently, the rats just fall asleep in their nests, then die without pain. I hope that's true, they didn't ask to be rats. Mind you, they're also cannibals and eat any dead bodies, so the poison acts twice. Bit of a result!!

OMG!! I had a Patterdale called Levi, and she would scream at anyone wearing a hat!! She also had a slug fetish, she always had slug remnants in her tosh. She was the weirdest creature. Should we be in the pub?

I started poisoning mice when i caught them having parties in my frying pan.  Yep, they bleed to death, but enough was enough.  They had already chewed through every plastic container I had.

Then my dog got in a cupboard and ate half a packet of mice poison.  That cost me 99 Euros at The Vet, but fortunately it worked.  And the mouse poison wasn't cheap either.  Vitamin K, by the way.

I had to have him put down a couple of months ago, just old age, but I miss him dreadfully.  I will get another dog eventually, but my lovely old boy is still around at the moment.  I still hear him up to no good in the middle of the night.

As a joke I tell my mother I was raised by Lećo.
Lećo was a german shepard that took care of me until he died, when I was 5 y.o.
I was born with a problem in my left leg that avoided me to walk at the normal age. I had many operations since birth until 3 and I wore a paraphernalia that didn't allow me to move much. My darling dog would carry me like a pup, so I could see the world outside. When I got rid of those handicapping devices, Lećo would provoke me to walk hanging on his fur.
He was the most beautiful dog in the world, I still remember my mother getting me from sleeping with his paws around me to get me to bed.
This dog was viciously killed and we (the family) never recovered from his death.

Recently I lost 2 cats, and even coming from a family that always had animals, pets, and experiencing the loss of those friends, these last ones was too much to deal with.

Twelve or thirteen years ago a student, knowing that I loved animals, arrived with a little basket with two tiny cats. She just said to me, either you take them or they are going to die.

What could I do?
I took the little things, both of them weighted less than half a pound and prayed to be able to make them survive. They were a week old, still with their eyes shut. I took them to the vet because they had parasites. As they were so young they couldn't be medicated. I did the best I could and eventually we got rid of those damn fleas. For 3 months I would carry the kittens in a kangaroo styled  way, hiding them under loose clothes and feeding them every 3 hours. Once I was caught while delivering a seminar, because one of them meowed.

To shorten the story, they became big beautiful cats. The black one, Felix was 18 pounds of muscle, Carlos, the striped one, was 16 pounds of fat.
when they were 9 years old, Felix revealed a bump on his back. Vets, analysis, biopsys,...It was a very aggressive sort of cancer. He was operated but I was told immediately that there was no chance he would survive. But Felix wouldn't have any of it. As soon as he got home, even with the collar he would do all the naughtiness he used to do. One afternoon I arrived home and Felix, with his isabelian collar was just sat very quietly on top of lots of books from a very high shelf. In less than 5 minutes he starts to blow like a balloon. I got really frightened, just grabbed him, took off the collar so he would not choke, got him in the car and drove like mad to the animal's hospital.
His Excellency, Felix, by falling down, had provoked a strange condition where air gets in between the flesh and the skin. He had to be punctured with a needle to let the air off. I was crying, terrified with what had happened but Mr. Felix was delighted with the attention and licking the vet's helper hand. He had to be strapped in order to allow the skin to get back in place, and to make him less vain (more for commodity in fact) I made him wear baby t-shirts.
Unfortunately the cancer, as predicted, returned even more massively just a couple of months after the operation. There was no way we could operate again and chimio was too aggressive and in this case with no perspective of success.
The only solution was to give him pain killers or put him to sleep. Egotistically, Felix survived on pain killers for another year. It was not until his basic functions became impossible that I got the guts to release him from such a miserable life - the hardest decision in my life.

Carlos (Carlinhos for the friends), was a calm cat. In fact he only got in trouble when following his brother Felix. Carlos would spend his days with his tummy up at some sunny corner and would just make a little yawn sound when Felix decided to play with his ears. They were very close, those two.

When Felix died I was afraid Carlos wouldn't get over it. They had never been apart since birth and they just couldn't be one without the other - when they were kittens I would know in which drawer or closet Felix was hiding because Carlos would be meowing by it.

Carlos got over it and apparently seemed happy to have me all to himself. About one year later he started to have problems with the food. He was on a low caloric and urinary diet because he had had a urinary infection when he was 1 1/2 y.o. He was taken to the vet and they said it was nothing, just to change his diet. For the following six months I would take poor Carlinhos to the Hospital because he couldn't keep nothing he ate and was loosing weight so fast.
Finally they re-checked his analysis and x-rays and concluded that Carlos not only had already lost one kidney but was also with the other one being destroyed and not functioning.
Once again I was a coward and kept taking poor Carlinhos to the hospital for hemodialysis, until one day, after  3 days linked to the machine, he just  rested his very thin body against my arms and closed his eyes. I had to ask for him to be put to rest.

I miss all my animal friends that passed away, but these are still too vivid in my mind.

I would love to have a dog or a cat, but I'm still frighten to face the pain again.

I think you must face it.  If you are an animal person then life is never the same without one.

I still haven't replaced my lovely Romulus, but only because I have decided that I want a Pembrokeshire Corgi, and they are not easy to find in France.
Actually, I would settle for a French Bulldog, but there is no way in which I am paying the equivalent of £1,000 for a dog.
Corgis are cheap at the moment because they have gone out of fashion.

It makes it easier the way you put it.
Six months after Carlos died I was about to buy a grey main coon. It didn't happen because meanwhile the owner was charged with illicit trade of animals - she was accused of importing and sailing protected species - and all the animals were taken to a refuge as evidence.
I've never thought about animals as a market value. If I meet one and we get along, I don't mind paying a price, but I don't care if its breed is rare or ordinary.
But you are right, I have to get over it. 8((()*/

Maine Coons are apparently quite amazing.  I know someone who's got one and he loves the cat half to death, and takes it everywhere with him when he goes away.
Do a bit of Googling.  Young animals are transported throughout France by Courier Van, and with no great harm to the animal.

Value?  Who knows?  But generally speaking, animals who are bred for sale are usually better cared for initially.  And are expensive to raise from birth.  I know how much money I made from a litter of Shar Pei Puppies, and it wasn't a lot.
And I am a bit of a snob about dogs, for which I make no apology.

I just thought that £1,000 for a dog was a bit over the top.  And it is only because French Bulldogs are fashionable at the moment.  Not the best of reasons as far as I can see.

I can't have a cat because I have got a very bad road near my door, and I just cannot cope with anymore of them being killed, much as I would love one.  But I can keep a dog confined.

Have a think about it, and get one when it is young.  Ten weeks is about right.  I think that eight weeks is a bit too young, providing it is still with it's mother of course.  If not, then eight weeks is fine.  In the end you can only go for the best situation.

Please post up if you get one because I would love to know.

PS.  Big, they are.  Maine Coons that is.  And very beautiful.  Oh Dear, I almost want one.

Lovely dog, Andrea... my g*d, those ears are nearly as big as a bats!

This is my GSD-Labrador cross, or was, because Max non č piu. Went off his hind legs at 15 years unfortunately.

Bought him for a tenner and the only illness he had during his long life apart from the odd muscle sprain, was one bout of kennel cough for about a week. Is it true that crossbred mongrels are healthier and more long-lived than pedigrees?

A nice video, even if you're a non-believer... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H17edn_RZoY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H17edn_RZoY)

Max looks like a lovely boy. You're right about crosses, they have "hybrid vigour" which does seem to keep them healthier than pure-breds. The breed I've had the worst luck with is whippets, I lost one at 6 to diabetes, and 1 at 4 to a brain tumour.

What a lovely story and a beautiful cat!

I used to foster kittens for a cat charity. If they were over 12/14 weeks they were usually considered un tameable. I had one who bit me so hard she made it through my thumb nail! She's the only kitten that I couldn't rehome. She was destined for a life as a mouser on a farm but I asked for one more go with her. 10 years later she's still here.

She hates most people and will run from my husband and 2 sons, but she seeks me out for cwtches and love.

It's on the circuit of the 3 vallees. There are 25 points all over the 4 different valleys to visit; your ski pass registers each visit. You can then get a 3 valleys expert certificate and cap badge from any booking office..

But we're 180 miles apart so I've been tempting her with virtual meals, and she'll not rise to the bait... : - (
Home-made with friendly creepy-crawlies... a delicacy where she comes from !

Phew!!... you won't want those nodders back when I've finished with them either!

OMG I think I've lost my appetite!  Certainly no nodders required!

Reminds me when my partner first 'cooked' me a meal.  He said it was salmon ding.  I thought wow some oriental dish he has spent ages preparing.  Transpired it was two ready made salmon meals and the ding was the sound from the microwave  8)><(

I haven't had any pussies for a while but most photos I have seen the brazilians are now all bald!

Talking of photos and kind of changing the subject, does anyone know how the feck your browsing history on an iPad can show up on your bloody iPhone as its browsing history! I don't even use the iPhone interwebby thingy! Something to do with a bloody iCloud I think, whatever the feck that may be .... tres embarrassing!

They will be soon when the football is brought home  ?>)()<  If only  8)><(

Seriously why do we still have furry bits well if you don't remove them?   What purpose does it serve?

Lost your appetite at what, milady !!!

Aaaah!... so much better than any tinned soup with paltry bits of reconstituted meat and veg which manufacturers include in theirs - "Mysters" sounds sooo.. good for a product title, think I'll patent it.

Introducing our 8 mth old Newfoundland: Rocco.

Lovely AA ... those huge dogs are great; my second favourites after German Sheps ... along with Bernese Mountain dogs. Rocco is a great name too ... watch out for those massive paws in a few more months!

Yep Kiki sleeps on top of the dog too.

He was my grandsons dog, Labradoodle (Big)
He is so gentle with the kitten and even washes her.

He is very soft, but not with door knockers or people in the drive.  @)(++(*

He is 3 and hasn't lived with a cat .
They are the best of mates and even play well together.  So pleased it worked out.

Baby loved the snow and would have loved it there, where you are.

Cats are amazing.
Just watching our cat cleaning and grooming himself so carefully.
He does this at least twice a day.

Never having had pets myself due to work commitments, major OCD for cleanliness, I would have, to have a pet that lived in their own little space without leaving any residue. Mam had cats, dogs, birds and at one time a little pig! Could be a possible reason for my OCD. The cats were always my favourite, as you point out in your post. Meticulous creatures unlike the dogs and the bloody pig!

I'm a moderate OCD for cleanliness which is possibly why I'm am not a cat owner but rather owned by a cat.
They are meticulous little creatures .
Did the pig live in your home?
