Murat to be heard today, his wife already into second day

by Marisa Rodrigues
12.12.2014

The third day of questioning was marked by the first presence of the new Scotland Yard team leader, the British police force that investigates the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Nicola Wall was at the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) yesterday, in Faro, to learn about the latest steps in the case and to meet the Portuguese inspectors that carry out the requested diligences.

The chief inspector, with a career in homicide and violent crime, arrived at the PJ at 9h20. She arrived on foot and walked through the front door in the company of Andy Redwood, who will retire at the end of the year. She smiled, greeted the journalists and made no statement. At the end of the day, she left through the garage, with other members of the English team.

Yesterday, three further witnesses were heard - a Portuguese man, the English manager of the resort where Madeleine disappeared from, John Hill, and his wife, Donna Rafferty-Hill, who worked at the Ocean Club. The couple did not speak to the journalists.

The most eagerly awaited questioning remains that of Robert Murat. Scheduled for yesterday morning, it was postponed until today because the lawyer, Francisco Pagarete, raised doubts about the legality of his questioning as as witness, because the British man had already been investigated when he was made an arguido in 2007, having been cleared. Another issue was the question of time, given that Pagarete is also the lawyer of Robert's wife, Michaela Walczuch, and he accompanied her questioning, until almost 18h00.

The deposition of Robert and three other witnesses that have been summoned to the PJ today, close the questioning of ten persons, as a British woman remains to be questioned in England.

I wonder how these news reporters know what has been said inside the police station, if judicial secrecy is in place?

Murat protects himself from 200 questions

by Marisa Rodrigues
13.12.2014

The new questioning of Robert Murat, the British citizen who was the first arguido in the case, was of liitle use to Nicola Wall, the new Scotland Yard chief for the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, in 2007.

Murat was heard yesterday at the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Faro, at the request of English authorities, as a witness, although he is seen by Scotland Yard as a person of "high interest". Robert arrived at the PJ at 9h30, accompanied by his lawyer Francisco Pagarete, and entered through the garage in a car driven by a Judiciária employee. He left the same way, at 13h05.

As Jornal de Notícias was able to establish, the British man had a list of 200 questions waiting for him, which had been prepared by British police, but the questioning didn't last long, as Robert referenced to the answers he had already given to the PJ on the various occasions that he was questioned as an arguido. Francisco Pagarete refused to comment.

Yesterday, three other witnesses from the ten that were notified were heard. One British woman will give a statement in England. Nicola Wall was not seen at the PJ. The day before yesterday she had a meeting with the PJ team that has been carrying out the diligences.

I would have thought that judicial secrecy referred to official statements from the police, not unofficial leaks. Just like SY aren't giving a running commentary/

Mirror reported him being questioned for 4 hours..and he said he'd be happy to answer the questions anyway.. but if the questions were implicating him or trying to set him up he'd of course not answer them..

Surely that will only apply if he is arguido? As a witness he is obliged to answer or risk prosecution?

I think he did answer his questions and the report is wrong.

I suspect that Robert Murat is not obliged to answer questions that he has already answered in previous interviews.

We have conflicting reports about his questioning: British media reports him being questioned for 4 hours while Portuguese media says he was in for short time and had invoked his right of not answering. Is there a way that both might be true?

He entered the headquarters at 9.30 and left at 13.05, so approx. 3hrs.35mins according to DN timing.

They (DN) were able to establish   etc.etc....... His Lawyer refused to comment, which could mean that possibly, RM told them, that he didn't answer all the questions. Your guess is as good as mine really, as to how they did find out

The link under the news post will take you to this news in Portuguese, if you wish to check it out.

EXCLUSIVE: Brazilians in the frame in Madeleine hunt

The behaviour of a Brazilian couple who were seen acting suspiciously around the time of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance is now being re-examined by Portuguese police.

December 14, 2014
By JAMES MURRAY

After British detectives sat in on interviews in Faro with witnesses last week, the Sunday Express can reveal Policia Judiciaria co-ordinator Ana Paula Rito is taking a broader look at leads which may not have been fully pursued.

She is now keen to learn more about the Brazilian couple, who are said to have expressed a strong desire to have a child when they were in the Algarve in May 2007 when Madeleine vanished.

A few days after Madeleine vanished from flat 5a of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, a British man came forward with his concerns about the couple and was interviewed by Portuguese detectives.

On the night of the abduction the man was closing his video rental shop just a few streets away from the apartment.

At 10.45pm, 45 minutes after Kate McCann had discovered that her daughter was missing, he noticed the Brazilian woman, aged about 25, driving past his shop in a red car.

he couple, who were staying on a yacht at the marina left shortly after the disappearance and have not been seen again
He told police there was a dog in the front seat and the woman driver kept looking at something on the back seat which he could not see.

Her partner, a bald Brazilian man in his early 40s, had worked on a local farm but was fired after some machinery was damaged and later worked at Lagos marina, about four miles from Luz doing boat repair work.

The couple, who were staying on a yacht at the marina left shortly after the disappearance and have not been seen again.

A dark-haired woman seen hanging around the apartment at 8pm on the night Madeleine vanished has never been identified or traced.

On Friday expatriate British businessman Robert Murat was re-interviewed for several hours, the last of 10 witnesses to be seen.

You cannot make this up!

Someone has.

'On the night of the abduction the man was closing his video rental shop just a few streets away from the apartment.'

'At 10.45pm, 45 minutes after Kate McCann had discovered that her daughter was missing, he noticed the Brazilian woman, aged about 25, driving past his shop in a red car.'

'He told police there was a dog in the front seat and the woman driver kept looking at something on the back seat which he could not see.'

She kept looking, whilst driving past.

What did she do, kerb crawl past his shop?

You'd think if she were abducting a kid she'd get the hell out of there, not, go for a sunday drive.

What a load of old pants.

It is reported in Amaral's book. Somebody here had a quote in english. It seemed so strange that i searched in google and found a pdf with the book in portoguese. Although i have limited knowledge of this language  i am sure that this is what he meant. These are exactly the words from the book.

Michaela parece atirar as culpas do rapto de madeleine para cima do marido.

Maybe someone with better knowledge of portuguese could confirm this.

From Dr Amaral's book (page 44)

On May 14th, the home and vehicles belonging to Michaela and Luis Antonio are searched. The couple are interviewed in the afternoon. Michaela hints that she suspects her husband. Luis Antonio, as a person responsible for maintaining swimming pools, has access to a great number of hotel or private residences, spread throughout the Vila da Luz and Lagos area. Certain buildings are closed for a good part of the year, but in spring, the pools are prepared before the summer season. Searches are ordered of all the residences concerned, without success. No trace, anywhere, of Madeleine. We're back to square one.
