Of course. If it's obvious that the questioning will take ages, the MP is asked authorization for keeping the suspect in the police station. This can't last more than 48 hours (I'm not sure, may be 72).

Very likely, if they were identified as burglars, they must have been convicted at least once. Perhaps set free since then ?

I wonder what is really going on between the British and Portuguese police 

There is no information coming from either side  (  quite rightly I think  )   with the only  'news'  in the press coming from the McCann team
