Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral has won his appeal against his court libel defeat to Madeleine McCann's parents.

The former police chief was ordered to pay Kate and Gerry McCann €500,000 in damages in April last year after accusing them of faking their daughter's abduction.

But today he posted a copy of the 16-page judgement overturning the original decision on an Internet blog.

Former Portuguese police chief Goncalo Amaral (pictured) has won his appeal over a court libel loss against Madeleine McCann's parents and won't have to pat them €500,000 in damages, it was reported today

The last page of the document, signed by three appeal judges and dated April 19, confirmed the original ruling was being revoked.

Amaral lost his long-running libel battle over his controversial 2008 book claiming the McCanns had faked missing daughter Madeleine's abduction after she died in their Algarve holiday apartment.

He was also ordered to pay interest after a Lisbon judge ruled he had overstepped freedom of speech limits in The Truth Of The Lie.

After the verdict, the McCanns announced they would plough 'every penny' of the payout into the hunt for their daughter, who was three years old when she vanished on May 3, 2007.

But Amaral's appeal, which he confirmed the following month, thwarted their hopes of spending the money.

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the McCanns, was unavailable this afternoon afternoon.

Isabel Duarte, the Portuguese lawyer who represented the couple over the libel case, was said by her office to be in court and unavailable.

Amaral could also be immediately contacted.

This is a translation of numbers 3 and of the Appellate Court of Lisbon's decision in the case that has been filed by the McCann family against Gonçalo Amaral and others.

This blog would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to every one of you who have supported Gonçalo Amaral through this case. It is not over; but this is, without doubt, a significant and relevant decision that boosts our confidence in the Portuguese Courts and in a system that may be excruciatingly slow but ultimately serves its purpose of performing Justice.

Thank you.

#yes...damages for what...and would any judgement by a portuguese court be enforceable against assets in the UK

Losses incurred as a consequence of the McCann's legal actions.
A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.

Madeleine McCann's Parents Lose Lisbon Libel Case on Appeal

LISBON, Portugal — A lawyer for the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann say an appeals court in Portugal has overturned the libel conviction of a former Portuguese detective who published a book alleging they were involved in their daughter's disappearance.

Lisbon lawyer Isabel Duarte tells The Associated Press she was notified Tuesday of the court's decision to uphold Goncalo Amaral's appeal against the order to pay Kate and Gerry McCann 500,000 euros ($568,000) in compensation. Duarte said she intended to fight the decision at the Supreme Court.

Amaral was part of the police investigation into Madeleine's disappearance from a vacation home in Portugal's Algarve region in May 2007, days before her fourth birthday. In 2008 he published his book about the case called "The Truth of the Lie."

They and the mccanns did not see this one coming.

Clearly the appeal judges took the view that the facts in the case were already public knowledge and formed a substantial part of the Archiving Report.  They also accepted that the McCanns themselves were partly responsible for the promotion of the thesis.
