I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that the McCanns were getting tennis lessons?

Some take things like that very seriously.  Could be he thought learning to play tennis properly was going to be hard going.

They booked more lessons than the other friends.   Determined maybe to do well?

That makes sense, the Mccanns booked loads of tennis lesssons, something they would not enjoy, when on holiday, not
...
You are missing the point I was making.      You might enjoy going to the Gym,  but the reason is to get fit.   So would you say
'I'm off to enjoy myself at the gym?

What I was saying was Gerry's 'I'm not going to enjoy myself'   was a light hearted reference to going to learn how to play tennis properly.

A challenge to him.     He might enjoy playing tennis,  but it was a challenge to learn how to play it properly.

Get my point?
