Missing Rebecca Watts: Park lake is searched

A lake is being searched as police attempt to locate a teenager who has been missing for more than a week.

Rebecca Watts, 16, was reported missing after not returning to her home in St George, Bristol, eight days ago.

She left home with her mobile phone and laptop but without a change of clothes. Her disappearance is described as "completely out of character".

Police are searching the lake in St George Park. They have previously searched Troopers Hill nature reserve.

The family home has also been scoured by forensic officers.

Rebecca's father Darren Galsworthy and stepmother Anjie were taken from the property before the search, which police described as "standard practice".

Police have also said the search of the lake in St George Park is "routine" and they have "no specific intelligence" about the area.

Rebecca, known as Becky, is described as white, 5ft 4in (1.6m) tall, with long red hair. It is thought she was wearing a blue puffa-style jacket on the day she went missing.

Despite hundreds of leaflets being handed out and several searches organised by members of the public, there has been no sign of the teenager.

Police have also used social media extensively in a bid to track her down using the Twitter hashtag #findbecky.

Officers claim the campaign has reached about two million people.

Missing Bristol teenager: Hopes starting to fade for missing Rebecca Watts

By Bath Chronicle  |  Posted: February 27, 2015

Police from three different forces are involved in the desperate search for missing Bristol teenager Rebecca Watts.

Sniffer dogs, mounted police, a helicopter and forensic teams are among those trying to find a clue as to the whereabouts of the 16 year old.

But more than a week after Becky seemingly vanished from her St George home, police admitted that they were no further forward in their bid to find her.

Last night there had still been no confirmed sightings of Becky, who left home without any money or a change of clothes but with her phone, laptop and tablet computers.

Her granddad, John Galsworthy, told the Bristol Post yesterday that hope was diminishing but the family were determined to stay positive in the search for her.

The 72-year-old, from Easton, said: "As you can imagine, as time goes by hope diminishes. But we are trying to keep positive with the hope it might come to a successful conclusion.

"It is hard, but we are really hoping she has just run away and that she will return safely. At least that would be something.

"Not knowing anything at all is the worst possibility. We are all doing what we can and looking after each other, and trying to remain positive."

Detective Inspector Richard Ocone, who is leading the investigation, said the Avon and Somerset force was being given help from South Wales and Wiltshire constabularies in their search yesterday.

Asked if they were any closer to finding out where Becky was, he responded: "No. We remain very concerned for her safety. We would like to make sure she is safe and return her to the family as soon as we possibly can."

He said possible sightings had been reported to police but no information had significantly taken officers forward in terms of finding Becky.

Det Insp Ocone said police were still in the process of trying to work out what happened on the morning of Becky's disappearance. She was last seen at her Crown Hill home.

"We think she left the house sometime between 11am and 12 noon," he said.

"There were other people within the house at the time (that she left). We are trying to establish at the moment if anyone in the house saw her leave.

"We don't believe that anyone actually saw her leave the house, but we are trying to work that out."

Det Insp Ocone said the others in the house were family members but would not confirm how many of them there were, or their identities.

Forensic investigations continued at the family home. Becky's dad Darren Galsworthy and his wife Anjie have moved out while police search it.

Sniffer dogs went in and bags of evidence were brought out yesterday.

Officers combed open space at nearby Troopers Hill yesterday, then moved on to nearby Netham Park.

Det Insp Ocone insisted the search was still "very much a missing person enquiry", adding: "We have nothing to show that Rebecca has come to any harm and clearly we would like to find her and return her as quickly as we can."

Becky is white, around 5ft 4in tall and slim. She has long, red or auburn hair and is very striking.

Anyone with any information can contact police on 101 quoting reference MP 591/15 or alternatively information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have also launched an online appeal using the hashtag #findbecky.

Rebecca Watts missing: Family say missing teen's father hasn't slept or eaten for a week

13:31, 27 February 2015 By Sam Webb

Becky's aunt Sarah says Darren Galsworthy is a "complete shell of himself"

The family of Becky Watts say the teenager's father has not eaten or slept since his daughter disappeared more than a week ago.

Becky, 16, was last seen at dad Darren Galsworthy's home on Thursday February 19 and has not been spotted or heard from since.

Forensics officers have been meticulously searching the house he shares with wife Anjie, 49, since Wednesday, and the couple have been moved into a 'safe house'.

Darren's sister Sarah Broom posted a photograph on Facebook of her brother in happier times, next to one of him during the search for Becky in recent days.

She said he was "half the man he was" after comments flooded in in the wake of Darren, 51, posting an unusual Facebook message suggesting Becky could be the victim of a sex attack.

Wednesday's note - written it in block capital letters and repeated three times in just 11 minutes - asked women to watch out for blood on family member's underwear.

It also comes after police started to search open water near her home today.

Gaunt: The father of missing teenager Rebecca Watts, Darren Galsworthy joins people who have voluntered to help search for his daughter

Writing on Facebook, Sarah said he's a "complete shell of himself - the same as we'd all be with the other half of us missing".

She added: "So please next time someone passes judgement, just share this photo and remind them what their looking at now is a man that hasn't eaten, hasn't slept, nor functioned properly for the last 7 days!!

"Love you bro."

She said the family - who were in a "living hell" - were searching landfills and open spaces for clues.

She added: "Somehow, we are still continuing to fight.

"As a family we are doing everything possible to find Becky. From morning to night we use all we have, yet we find ourselves in this living hell.

"Our aim is to just to find Becky safe."

Relative Denise Galsworthy, 57, called Darren a "loving and hard-working father".

She said he cared for his wife Anjie, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, and said they were just "an ordinary family thrust into a horror of a nightmare".

Writing on her Facebook page she said: "We may say something, may do something that people not in our position think strange, but we are human beings whose world has suddenly been turned upside down in one of the worst possible ways.

Her father is a hard working ordinary man, raising his children in a sick and sometimes unbelievably cruel world.

The family's comments have come to light as police started to search open water near Becky's home.

Officers in waterproof gear waded into a pond at St George's Park, but said the search was "routine" and they were not acting on specific intelligence.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary

27 February 2015

The search for missing Rebecca Watts has intensified again today as concerns grow for her whereabouts and safety.

On Tuesday (24/02) Detective Superintendent Liz Tunks, head of the Major Crime Investigation Unit, took over as the senior investigating officer (SIO) in this case.

D/Supt Tunks is speaking with national policing experts in the field of missing people to ensure that all possible tactics are being considered.

Detective Inspector Richard Ocone who has led the investigation up to this time is working closely with D/Supt Tunks as her Deputy SIO.

DI Ocone said:

“We are still treating this investigation as a missing person enquiry and we are committed to finding Becky and returning her home, but we need to cover every eventuality."

“The local community will see an increased policing presence as the investigation enters its second week, including additional specialist search officers from neighbouring forces drafted in to assist us.

“We are carrying out a detailed forensic search of Becky’s home where she was last seen to make sure there is nothing we have missed, and intensifying our search of the local area so no stone is left unturned.

“I would still appeal to anyone who may have information who has not yet spoken to us, to do so immediately on 101 or through the online form on our website.

“We will continue to push hard on our social media campaign and I ask everyone on Twitter to get behind our #FindBecky.

“Finally, I would like to thank the members of the public who have already come forward and given us information regarding this investigation.”

We have drafted in specialist search dogs from South Wales Police and colleagues from Wiltshire Police, Devon and Cornwall Police and Gloucestershire Police.

Today (27/02) we will also be carrying out specialist open water searches at the pond in St George’s Park. This is a routine part of any high risk missing person investigation and is not based on any specific intelligence.

These searches may extend to nearby lakes and rivers if required.

We will also be continuing extensive house to house enquiries in the local area and will keep a visible presence in the community close to Becky’s home address.

Rebecca, known as Becky, 16, has not been since last Thursday morning (19/02) when she was at her home address on Crown Hill, St George, Bristol.

Anyone with information should call 101 or 999. Alternatively, information can be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Welsh police involved in search for missing Bristol teenager Becky Watts

South Wales Police officers are now involved in the search for missing teenager Becky Watts.

27 February 2015

Officers from South Wales Police are among those searching for a teenage girl from Bristol who disappeared eight days ago.

Rebecca Watts, 16, known as Becky, was last seen at her house in Crown Hill in St George, Bristol, on the morning of February 19th.

She left home with her phone, laptop and tablet computer but did not tell friends or family where she was going, or take extra clothing.

Avon and Somerset Police have been searching for the teenager since she was reported missing by her family at 4pm on February 20th.

Detective Inspector Richard Ocone, who is leading the investigation, said Becky disappeared between 11am and 12pm.

"From our perspective this is completely out of character," he said.

"She has not taken anything that would suggest she was going to stay away for a long period of time."

Officers are combing woodland and open spaces near Becky's home, along with house-to-house inquiries, and have searched her neighbour's gardens and outhouses.

Searches at a nature reserve, Troopers Hill in Bristol, have now concluded without anything of significance found.

Mr Ocone confirmed the search was currently remaining in the "Bristol and Greater Bristol area".

Hundreds of leaflets have been printed and a social media campaign, using the hashtag #FindBecky, has been launched by the force.

Mr Ocone said the social media campaign had been far-reaching, with almost 400,000 viewing tweets and 22,000 engaging with them by retweeting, favouriting or clicking on them.

More than two million people around the world have seen the campaign on Facebook, with 30,959 shares including in Goa, New Zealand and America.

Facebook Ads have been used to target people in the Bristol area, reaching more than 21,000 and directing hundreds to the #FindBecky page on the force website.

Mr Ocone added: "We hope that this large online presence will lead to someone remembering something from the area or days following Becky's disappearance.

"We know that Becky is very keen on social media, as are most girls her age, and so we want our online communities to help us keep our appeal for information running."

Becky is described as 5ft 4in and slim, with long, bright red hair and was wearing a dark navy blue Puffa jacket with fabric sleeves.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Rebecca Watts missing: Family blasts vile internet trolls as search drags on

Becky's aunt Sarah says Darren Galsworthy is a "complete shell of himself"

The family of missing Becky Watts have slammed internet "trolls" who have posted cruel comments about her father.

Becky, 16, was last seen at dad Darren Galsworthy's home on Thursday February 19 and has not been spotted or heard from since.

Forensics officers have been searching the house he shares with wife Anjie, 49, since Wednesday, and the couple have been moved into a 'safe house'.

Darren's sister Sarah Broom posted a photograph on Facebook of her brother in happier times, next to one of him during the search for Becky in recent days.

She said he was "half the man he was" and accused "narrow minded people" of conducting a "witch hunt".

Gaunt: The father of missing teenager Rebecca Watts, Darren Galsworthy joins people who have voluntered to help search for his daughter

The comments come after Darren, 51, posted a Facebook message suggesting Becky could be the victim of a sex attack on Wednesday.

The note - written it in block capital letters and repeated three times in just 11 minutes - asked women to watch out for blood on family member's underwear.

It also comes after police started to search open water near her home today.

Writing on Facebook, Sarah said: "Just for all those trolls that said my brother 'looks like' - and whatever word or phrase their shallow mind chose to put next - this is my brother before this living hell.

"As you can see, half the man he was - a complete shell of himself! - the same as we'd all be with the other half of us missing.

"So please next time someone passes judgement, just share this photo and remind them what their looking at now is a man that hasn't eaten, hasn't sleep, nor functioned properly for the last 7 days!!

"Because people only see what their s**t blurred eyes choose to, and not what a person really is or was! Love you bro."

She said the family - who were in a "living hell" - were searching landfills and open spaces for clues.

Writing on Thursday, she added: "I know there has been so many trolls having a say, speculating and making up their own theories, writing comments on things they really know nothing about!

"These last few days has, as a family has really took all we are yet somehow we still are continuing to keep fight!

"As a family we are doing everything possible to find Becky. From morning to night we use all we have yet we find ourselves in this living hell, made up with narrow minded people!

"This isn't a witch hunt. Our aim is to just to find Becky safe.

"I can't bear to read some of these comments without commenting back, protecting my family, but it's just taking away time and strength I could be using to spend every second looking for my niece!"

Relative Denise Galsworthy, 57, also criticised "ignorant" people who were judging Darren, and called him a "loving and hard-working father".

She said he cared for his wife Anjie, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, and said they were just "an ordinary family thrust into a horror of a nightmare".

Gratitude: The father of missing teenager Rebecca Watts, Darren Galsworthy embraces a man who has arrived to help search for his daughter

Writing on her Facebook page she said: "We may say something, may do something that people not in our position think strange, but we are human beings whose world has suddenly been turned upside down in one of the worst possible ways.

"Her father is a hard working ordinary man, raising his children in a sick and sometimes unbelievably cruel world.

"So, this 'nasty dodgy looking man' is a loving, hard-working father who is also caring for a very ill wife, in a very ordinary house, in a very ordinary street - hardly news worthy,or gossip material, but TRUE.

"So if you don't want to help that's fine, but don't please break down those who desperately want their daughter/niece/granddaughter/sister/cousin home safely."

The family's comments have come to light as police started to search open water near Becky's home.

Officers in waterproof gear waded into a pond at St George's Park, but said the search was "routine" and they were not acting on specific intelligence.

Missing Bristol teenager: Police rule out murder enquiry after eight days without sighting of Becky Watts

Police insisted tonight the disappearance of Becky Watts was being treated a missing person enquiry and not a murder investigation.

By The Bristol Post  |  Posted: February 27, 2015

Detective Inspector Richard Ocone ruled out it being a criminal investigation, despite it being taken over by the head of Avon and Somerset’s Major Crime Investigation Unit.

He said: “We need to realise that we are eight days in and that she has not been seen for eight days. She’s a 16-year-old girl, shy, timid.

“Clearly we are extremely worried about her well-being and that’s what we are focused on – trying to find her and return her.

“But this is absolutely a missing person enquiry at this stage. It is not a murder enquiry.

“Clearly the eight days that have passed lead me to be extremely concerned about her welfare.

“We are using family liaison officers who are highly trained in dealing with these situations and they have been working with the family since the early part of the week.”

He confirmed that nearly nine days on from her disappearance and despite extensive searches in Bristol and online campaigns – there still had been no confirmed sightings of Becky since she left her Crown Hill home in St George last Thursday.

Police are keeping tight-lipped over what happened leading up to Becky going missing.

“We know Rebecca was at home that morning. We believe she went out during the late morning and left the house and that really is the last sighting we have got of her,” he said.

He refused to comment on speculation that no one saw her leave the home and just heard her music turned off and the front door shut.

Other family members were in the Crown Hill home at the time, but DI Ocone declined to comment on who was there and said: “There is nothing more I can tell you about that at the moment”.

“The problem in this case is up to that morning she is a very prolific user of her phone and social media,” the detective said.

“At the time we believe she left the family address there is no further use on it.

“Some of our specialists are still working on the phone, but at this moment we have not been able to track that any further.”

Officers from other police forces including South Wales, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Devon and Cornwall have joined in the search – although police will not say exactly how many officers have been looking for Becky.

“It’s still very much a missing person investigation and there is lots of searching taking place. We have got lots of support from other forces in the area and bought a lot of officers into the area to help us.

“You are going to see considerable activity over the weekend. We have put in significant amount of resources to assist this search. The activity you have seen is purely routine.”

He said officers would be carrying on house-to-house enquiries, open land searches and forensics at her home.

Rebecca Watts missing: Father's car searched as family slam internet trolls ''making up theories''

23:57, 27 February 2015 By Richard Smith

Forensic experts examined a red Land Rover Discovery on Darren Galsworthy’s front drive as the hunt for Becky, who disappeared 10 days ago, continued

Police investigating the disappearance of Rebecca Watts today searched the Land Rover of her father Darren Galsworthy.

Rebecca, 16, vanished 10 days ago and the police are growing increasingly concerned for her safety.

Forensic experts examined a red R-reg Land Rover Discovery on Darren’s front drive.

An onlooker said: “The forensic guys were carrying torches and seemed to be taking samples.

"They gave the car a proper going over.”

Divers also spent hours chest deep in a lake a mile from the family home – which is being searched as well.

And today major crime investigation unit boss Det Supt Liz Tunks took control of the investigation.

Her deputy, Det Insp Richard Ocone, said: “We are treating this as a missing person inquiry and we are committed to finding Becky but we need to cover every eventuality.”

Rebecca's distraught family blasted internet trolls for jibes about her dad and “making up theories”.

As Rebecca’s family waited for news, Darren’s sister Sarah Broom hit out at comments about him online.

She wrote on Facebook: “I know there has been so many trolls having a say, speculating and making up their own theories, writing comments on things they know nothing about!

“As a family we are doing everything possible to find Becky. From morning to night we use all we have yet we find ourselves in this living hell, made up with narrow minded people!”

She also posted pictures showing how Darren, 51, was “a shell of himself” since Rebecca had vanished.

Relative Denise Galsworthy added: “Her father is an ordinary man, raising his children in an unbelievably cruel world. This ‘nasty dodgy looking man’ is a loving, hard-working father.”

Rebecca – retaking her GCSEs – lives with Darren and step-mum Anjie, 49, in Crown Hill, St George, Bristol.

She was last seen at home between 11am and 12pm last Thursday. She was reported missing by family at 4pm the next day.

Her laptop and phone were gone but all her clothes and make-up were still there. Darren and Anjie were moved to a safe house.

Missing Rebecca Watts' family in new Bristol search

28 February 2015

Some 150 friends and family of Rebecca Watts, missing for over a week, have gathered in Bristol to look for her.

It comes as police continue to search a lake in St George's Park and say the operation could be extended to nearby lakes and rivers.

Rebecca was reported missing after failing to return to her home in Crown Hill, St George, on 19 February.

Detectives have previously searched Troopers Hill nature reserve as well as her family home.

On Friday Det Supt Liz Tunks, head of Avon and Somerset Police's major crime investigation unit, took over the case and said she was consulting missing people experts to ensure "all possible tactics are being considered".

Rebecca Watts was reported missing nine days ago Avon and Somerset Police previously said she took her laptop and mobile phone with her but no clothing or make-up.

John Galsworthy, her grandfather, said the family were trying to remain strong as the search intensified.

Addressing those who had gathered, he said: "We are broadening the search.

"There are groups separate to ours who are going out using their own initiative, going wherever necessary to try and find her.

"We are continuing in the hope there may be something discovered today. We want everyone to keep their eyes and ears open."

Detectives have previously searched Troopers Hill nature reserve as well as her family home, which is close to St George Park.

On Friday Det Supt Liz Tunks, head of Avon and Somerset Police's major crime investigation unit, took over the case and said she was consulting missing people experts to ensure "all possible tactics are being considered".

As part of the search, Mr Galsworthy said more than 6,000 leaflets had been printed, with around 1,500 more expected to be delivered next week.

Laptop Found In Search For Missing Teenager

Over 100 volunteers are taking part in a search for the missing teen who left home in Bristol with her laptop and phone last week.

Saturday 28 February 2015 15:15, UK

Over 100 friends and family are taking part in a search for the 16-year-old

A discarded laptop has been discovered during the search for missing 16-year-old Rebecca Watts, friends and family say.

The discovery came as more than 100 friends and family took part in a search across Bristol, where the teenager was last seen over a week ago.

Police said she left her home in Crown Hill, in the St George area of the city, on 19 February with her phone, laptop and tablet computer.

She did not tell her friends or family where she was going, or take extra clothes.

The teenager, described as shy, was reported missing by her family at 4pm on February 20.

John Galsworthy, Becky's paternal grandfather, said the family were trying to remain strong as the search intensifies.

Mr Galsworthy said: "We are broadening the search. There are groups separate to ours who are going out using their own initiative, going wherever necessary to try and find her.

"We are continuing in the hope there may be something discovered today. We want everyone to keep their eyes and ears open."

Police divers have searched a lake in St George's Park, close to the youngster's home.

Dogs and mounted officers have been involved in the hunt and officers from neighbouring force areas have also been drafted in to help.

The detective leading the hunt has said Rebecca's disappearance was "totally out of character".

Detective Inspector Richard Ocone said: "She has not taken anything that would suggest she was going to stay away for a long period of time."

Her father, Darren Galsworthy, has suggested on his Facebook page he fears his daughter may have been attacked.

He appealed to any wives or girlfriends who have washed any blood from their loved ones' clothes that cannot be explained to get in touch with police.

Police previously said there was "nothing to suggest" that Becky had come to harm, despite the fears of the girl's father.

A social media campaign using the hashtag #FindBecky has also gathered momentum.

Becky is described as 5ft 4in and slim, with long, bright red hair and was wearing a dark navy blue Puffa jacket with fabric sleeves.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I don't think they generally find odd lap tops lying around, especially in an area where one has gone missing.
But two people have been arrested, and while not necessarily guilty, The Police must have found something.

More police resources are being utilised as the search for missing 16 year old Rebecca Watts intensifies.

A number of locations have now been searched within a 2km radius of Becky’s home address in the St George area of Bristol.

We can confirm that, at this stage, no significant items have been identified during these searches.

A laptop computer which was found a in a local wooded area yesterday, is not related to this missing person investigation.

We are running six specialist search teams each day which are being complimented by officers from Wiltshire, Devon and Cornwall and Gloucestershire Police forces.

Tomorrow (02/03), we will again be assisted by the specialist dog unit from South Wales Police and the police helicopter.

Search and missing persons' experts from the National Crime Agency, College of Policing and the National Missing Persons organisations continue to work with our enquiry team.

Detective Superintendent Liz Tunks, head of the Major Crime Investigation Team at Avon and Somerset Police said: “Firstly, I would like to reiterate my message yesterday that our search for Becky continues unabated and we are using all available resources to find her.

“Secondly, I would like to extend my thanks to the local communities in St George and the wider Bristol area who have assisted with our search efforts so far.

“The sheer number of people who have shown support during the public searches has been incredible. I would ask that all planned public searches are co-ordinated through us so they dovetail with the extensive search operation we have running.

Search: Police have been searching a property in Wilton Close, Bristol, as they hunt for missing Becky

Police are searching a third home in Bristol in their desperate hunt for missing Rebecca Watts.

Avon and Somerset Police have now called in reinforcement from three neighbouring forces as the search for the vanished 16-year-old intensifies.

Cops said searches of houses in Southmead, Bristol's Barton Hill area and the family home were part of "lines of inquiry".

Forensic teams ended their search of the Barton Bill property on Sunday but a police cordon remained in place overnight.

Six specialist search teams, including officers from Wiltshire, Devon and Cornwall and Gloucestershire, are involved in the operation.

Earlier today, officers were reportedly been seen digging up the garden of a house six miles from her family's home.

Cops have been carrying out a meticulous search of the semi-detached property since Saturday afternoon.

A black car has also been examined since being picked up in the same streeet.

Neighbours reported forensics teams hunting through the boot of the Vauxhall Zafira which had been on the street for more than a week, but did not belong to any locals.

Today forensics officers were walking in and out of the house in Wilton Close, Southmead, Bristol, carrying evidence bags, with an officer standing at the gate.

Locals said police had been searching the two-storey house constantly since Saturday, and that it was privately rented by a family with two or three children.

There was no sign of the residents - reported to be staying in a local hotel - and it is not clear whether they are connected to the two people currently being questioned by police.

Neighbours said officers had been conducting door-to-door enquiries since Saturday, with police asking if they knew Becky and showing them photos of the teenager.

One neighbour, who asked not be be named, said they believed the garden of the property was being dug up.

Another neighbour said tonight: "They were here yesterday at about four in the afternoon.

One anonymous neighbour told the Bristol Post that they believed the garden of the property was being dug up.

Another woman who lives on the road said: "They keep themselves to themselves really.

"There is an older woman who is on a mobility scooter, and she takes around a little lad about two, up and down the road.

"I think there is another woman, and two girls, maybe about 11 and eight."

Police officers extended the cordon around the property at about 5pm on Sunday as residents gathered in the road.

The semi-detached property stands at the end of the street next to an overgrown outside area, filled with rubbish and old cars.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the hunt at the property was linked to the search for missing Becky Watts.

He said: "It is a line of enquiry we are looking into at the moment into the Becky Watts missing persons enquiry.

"It is only one of a number we are looking into."

He would not confirm if officers had been digging in the garden.

2 March 2015 Last updated at 11:14

Police have been granted more time to question two people who were arrested in the investigation into a girl missing for more than a week.

Becky Watts was last seen at her home in the St George area of Bristol on 19 February.

Three homes in the city have been searched as part of the investigation, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Officers can now question the pair for a further 36 hours after an extension was granted by Bristol magistrates.

No details of the two people have been released by police, and the reasons for their arrest have not been revealed.

Searches are continuing at houses in Wilton Close, Southmead, at Cotton Mill Lane, Barton Hill, and at the family home in St George.

Forensic officers arrived at the Barton Hill address at about 11:00 GMT.

The BBC's Jon Kay said officers could be seen using ladders to access the house in Southmead and neighbours said a black estate car, which had been parked outside for about a week, was examined and then removed by police.

Officers began searching the Barton Hill property again on Monday

Officers have also searched a car parked outside the house, the lake in St George Park and Troopers Hill nature reserve.

Avon and Somerset Police said it was now running six search teams, including officers from Wiltshire, Devon and Cornwall and Gloucestershire forces.

A dog unit from South Wales Police will also be helping with the search.

In a statement, Becky's father Darren, and stepmother Angie-Mae Galsworthy, said they "continue to hope" she will be found safe but they were preparing themselves for the worst.

About 150 members of the public joined an organised search of Oldbury Court estate on Saturday in the hope of finding evidence.

But further public searches have been postponed, according to the Find Rebecca Watts Facebook group.

The message said members were "trying to work alongside of the police and help them with the investigation".

"Police have urged us to flood everywhere, especially shopping centres, with posters," it read.

Man and woman arrested on suspicion of Becky Watts murder

Added on 02 March 2015 at 16:35

This afternoon, Detective Superintendent Mike Courtiour released the following statement regarding the search for missing teenager Rebecca Watts:

On Saturday afternoon we arrested two people in connection with the Becky Watts missing person investigation.

A 28 year old man and a 21 year old woman were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of the kidnap of Rebecca Watts. This afternoon, they have been further arrested on suspicion of the murder of Rebecca Watts

Both are still in police custody at this time.

This morning, a district judge granted us a warrant of further detention which gives us a further 36 hours to question these two individuals.

In the meantime, our search for Becky continues unabated.

We are drawing upon all possible resources to help us. Additional officers from Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Devon and Cornwall and police dogs from South Wales Police have been drafted in and support from the police helicopter.

Search and missing persons' experts from the National Crime Agency, College of Policing and the National Missing Persons organisations continue to work with our enquiry team.

We have extended our search parameters to include a house in Southmead and one in the Barton Hill area of Bristol. These are detailed, forensic searches which will take some time to complete.

We continue to carry out both open land searches and detailed house to house enquiries in the local area.

We have also conducted extensive CCTV enquiries and detailed analysis of traffic cameras in the area.

I would appeal once again for anyone who may have any information on this case to come forward immediately. Someone out there might have vital information which could help us find Becky.

This morning, we published an appeal for information from anyone who may have seen a black Vauxhall Zafira, registration number HY06 HYA, in the local area anytime between the morning of Thursday 19th February to Monday 23rd February.

We have seized this car but we need the public’s help in us tracing where it might have been during those key days.

I would also like to repeat our thanks to the local communities who have been supporting this investigation from the beginning. We have all been touched by the number of people who have offered their time to help with the search for Becky.

I would ask that any public searches planned over the next few days are coordinated through us so we can dovetail these with our extensive search plan.

We have also been impressed by the level of engagement we have had with our online drive to find Becky. The #FindBecky has reached thousands of people and the total reach for our social media campaign has now reached more than 4million people world-wide.

Becky’s family are understandably distraught and we are working closely with them to support them at this difficult time.

Finally, I would like to repeat our plea for anyone who has any information regarding this investigation to contact us immediately.

You can call us on 101, leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or use our online reporting tool on our website.

We also need to speak to any previous owners of this vehicle. If you have owned this car in the last few years, we need to speak to you as a matter of urgency.

We have seized this car but need the public’s help in piecing together where it might have been.

If you think you saw this vehicle during this time, please contact us immediately on 101 or use the online reporting tool found here http://bit.ly/1DUdhyi.

I wonder what was found in the car, that makes it necessary to speak to previous owners?

It never ceases to amaze what one human being can do to another.  Not content with murdering this young innocent girl these misfits of society had to defile her remains too in an attempt to protect their own miserable skins.

It is cases like this which reinforces my belief in capital punishment.

Significant discovery made in Becky Watts investigation

Added on 03 March 2015 at 09:57

Detective Superintendent Mike Courtiour made the following statement:

“As a result of new information received late last night (02/03), we attended a house at Barton Court in the Barton Hill area of Bristol.

“The information suggested that Becky’s body had been cut up and a search at the new location resulted in the discovery of body parts.

“Although formal identification procedures have not yet been completed, we have made Becky’s family aware of this discovery.

“As a result of this latest development, a further four men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“They remain in police custody at this time as do the man and the woman arrested on suspicion of Becky’s murder.

“This is devastating news for Becky’s family and friends and our thoughts are with them. We will continue to offer every support we can to them during this terrible ordeal.”

Police have appealed for people to be sensitive to the family's feelings at this horrific time for them.

In an apparent plea to any potential Twitter trolls, Avon and Somerset Police called on people to think about what they are saying on social networks.

This comes after the tragic news was announced this morning that body parts had been discovered in the search for Becky.

Stepbrother charged with Becky Watts murder in Bristol

4 March 2015 Last updated at 17:05

Nathan Matthews, the stepbrother of missing 16-year-old Becky Watts, has been charged with her murder, Avon and Somerset Police have said.

His girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, 21, also known as Shauna Phillips, has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The pair, of Cotton Mill Lane, Bristol, are due before magistrates on Thursday.

Four other men and a woman, all in their 20s, are still being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Mr Matthews and Ms Hoare are due to appear at Bristol Magistrates Court at 10:00 GMT on Thursday.

Becky, who was described by her family as "wonderful", was last seen on 19 February and was reported missing the following day.

Floral tributes have been left outside Becky's home in St George, Bristol

On Tuesday, body parts were found at a house in Barton Hill, Bristol.

Floral tributes have been left outside Becky's home and near the house where the body parts were found.

St Ambrose Church, near the family home, is to be opened until 21:00 GMT, and again from 10:30 to 21:00 on Thursday, for people to light candles in the 16-year-old's memory.

A book of condolence has also been placed there.

The Right Reverend Mike Hill, Bishop of Bristol, paid tribute to Becky's family and said he had been "deeply" affected by the death.

"I feel sure that people both of faith and of no faith will join with me in wishing to support the friends and family of Becky Watts," he said.

On Wednesday morning, magistrates granted police a further 24 hours to question the two men aged 29, two aged 23 and a woman aged 23 who had been arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Becky Watts: Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare appear in court

Stepbrother of 16-year-old is charged with her murder and his girlfriend is charged with perverting the course of justice

Steven Morris Thursday 5 March 2015

The stepbrother of Becky Watts has appeared in court charged with her murder exactly two weeks after the 16-year-old vanished from her home in Bristol.

Nathan Matthews, 28, was led in and out of the glass-fronted dock at Bristol magistrates’ court in handcuffs and showed little emotion as the charge of murder was read out.

Matthews will next appear – via videolink – at Bristol crown court on Friday. A preliminary hearing in Hoare’s case will take place on 2 April.

Security around the court in the centre of Bristol, two miles from where body parts were found on Monday night, was tight as anger grows over the killing of the teenager. A marked police van flanked by four officers on foot is believed to have transported the pair into the court complex.

Matthews and Hoare – also known as Phillips – were arrested last weekend as police searched for Becky, who vanished on 19 February. They were initially questioned on suspicion of kidnapping. On Monday, detectives revealed that they had been further arrested on suspicion of murder and the police had until 3.50pm on Wednesday to release or charge the pair.

Shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, Avon and Somerset police announced they had been charged: Matthews with murder, Hoare with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Ahead of their appearances on Thursday, district judge Lynne Matthews warned the media that there would be automatic restrictions over what could be reported. She said she did not expect to see a “flurry of activity” on the internet.

Wearing a blue T-shirt and looking tired and unshaven, Matthews was led into the dock in handcuffs by a female custody officer. When asked what his name was he did not hear and said: “Sorry?” He then gave his name his date of birth – 9 January 1987 – and his address as a street in Warmley, a village on the outskirts on Bristol.

The district judge told him the case would have to go to crown court. “As we all know, this case will have to go to the crown court. I cannot entertain any application for bail this morning and thus I will remand you in custody until tomorrow,” she said.

Matthews nodded as the judge told him he would appear at the crown court via videolink. The female custody officer put the handcuffs back on and he was led out. The hearing took a minute or so.

A few minutes later Hoare, who wore a baggy dark blue T-shirt, was brought into the same dock. Her long brown hair looked unwashed. Speaking very quietly, she confirmed her name, address and date of birth – 12 February 1994 – and again showed little emotion. She gave a different address from Matthews’ – Cotton Mill Lane in Barton Hill, Bristol, which has been the subject of intensive police searches. The judge told her that she would be remanded in custody given the seriousness of the offence.

The charge states that Hoare “did a series of acts which had the tendency to pervert the course of public justice in that you hindered the police investigation to assist Nathan Matthews and intended for him to avoid detection for the murder of Rebecca Watts”. Her hearing also only lasted about a minute.

The court was packed with reporters. Becky’s father, Darren Galsworthy, and stepmother, Anjie Galsworthy, did not attend.

A small group gathered outside the court and four members of the public angrily struck the side of the custody van as it departed.

Linda Dobson, 47, who was with her husband, Donny, 52, said: “What’s happened is horrifying. All of Bristol are livid. She was a young girl with so much to live for.” Another person, who lives near Becky’s home, said: “I live in that area, my kids go to school there, they play in the parks. But now I’m too scared to let them go alone.”

Matthews is a delivery driver and claims on his Facebook page that he served in the British army. Hoare posted appeals for information about Becky on social media before she was arrested. They have a young child.

Police continue to hold another four men and a woman, all in their 20s, on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Hoare was briefly taken to hospital on Tuesday night. A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that the woman in custody arrested on suspicion of the murder of Becky Watts was taken to hospital after feeling unwell in custody. She was seen by a doctor and taken back into custody a short time later.”

Members of Becky’s family have expressed their anguish at what has happened while churches and other religious centres in Bristol held services, vigils and opened books of condolence.

Becky’s brother, Dan Galsworthy, 20, posted a message on Facebook describing his loss. “This has left a deep hole in my heart and will continue to haunt me,” he wrote. “To everyone messaging and supporting me I haven’t replied to any messages because I simply have no words, I thank you all and deeply appreciate everyone’s support. Love to you all.”

Sarah Broom, the sister of Becky’s father, Darren Galsworthy, posted on her Facebook page: “He [Galsworthy] is completely and utterly broken and there is nothing in this world of comfort to him. How does a parent ever recover from this? How can a family?”

Addressing the 16-year-old, she said: “So with tears rolling down my face Becky, you beautiful, beautiful soul, you have touched so many hearts and changed so many lives! Your shy, inverted nature has outshone and touched a whole city and beyond!”

Becky’s uncle, Sam Galsworthy, told ITV News: “It was the most undignified end to a beautiful life, full of promise. As her family, it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But we know it is there and the support from family, friends and the nation will help us find that light.

“She will live on in the hearts of all of us. We will reclaim Rebecca’s dignity. And eventually, as a community, we will lay her to rest with the utmost respect and love.”

It emerged on Wednesday that a house on the other side of Bristol, in Avonmouth, had also been searched. A neighbour there said: “Two riot vans full of officers turned up and went into the house. Police wouldn’t say much, but we were told it was to do with the young girl, Becky Watts.” Police confirmed that the operation was connected.

Becky’s boyfriend, Luke Oberhansli, was among those who has laid flowers outside her father and stepmother’s home. Nearby, a book of condolence was set up next to a candle and flowers at St Ambrose church.

The Rev David James said: “Rebecca was a pupil of Summerhill junior school just round the corner, so she would have come here every year for the Christmas carol service. These events have truly shocked people.”

Jan Bird, 64, from St George, Bristol, visited the church with two friends to pay their respects. She said: “It’s a nightmare; a living nightmare for that family that will never go away.”

An online fundraising appeal has been set up on behalf of the Galsworthy family in a bid to raise £20,000 to pay for her funeral.

The message on the Go Fund Me page says: “With the support of the public it is our wish to give Rebecca the biggest sendoff we possibly can to honour this much-loved girl, taken far too soon. We also wish to support her immediate family while they continue to grieve through the unbearable pain and take away any financial burden they may face in the aftermath of this tragedy.”

In custody: Donovan Demetrius (Top) has also been charged as has Jamie Ireland, (bottom), and all four will appear in court today. A fifth suspect was released without charge

Delivery driver Matthews, 28, is accused of killing his stepsister and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare, 21, is accused of 'consistently lying to police' in an attempt to protect her boyfriend.
Matthews, who was unshaven and wearing a grey sweatshirt, appeared via video link from HMP Bristol, and did not enter a plea this morning.
Judge Neil Ford QC, Recorder of Bristol, remanded Matthews in custody and set another hearing for March 26 and he expected a trial after September 1.
Prosecutor James Ward told the court: 'Nathan Matthews is charged with the murder of Rebecca Watts.
'The allegations of this case have been well-rehearsed in the press recently and I do not propose to go into the finer details.
'There are still people helping the police with their inquiries. Therefore, it would be wrong to place before the media further details about this case.'

Police discovered body parts on Monday night after they were called to a property at Barton Court, in the Barton Hill area of Bristol (top right). They also searched a second house, and a blue car parked outside (bottom right). Barton Court is just a street away from a house in Cotton Mill Lane (bottom left) which has been searched extensively, and is opposite Becky's boyfriend Luke's house (bottom centre). Police also searched Becky's home (top right), and a house in Southmead (top left) where they seized a black Vauxhall Zafira

Mr Ward said police were assessing 'at least' 1,200 exhibits in connection with the case.
'Much forensic work needs to be done,' he said.
Paul Cook, representing Matthews, said his client was not making an application for bail.
Matthews' girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, 21, who is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, will also appear before the court charged with perverting the course of justice on that date.
They were detained after detectives attended a house in Barton Court, Barton Hill in Bristol, following information that Becky's body had been 'cut up'.

Yesterday, Matthews and Hoare stood emotionless in the dock to face charges after 16-year-old Becky's dismembered body was discovered 80 yards from their home earlier this week
Their separate court appearances were a stark contrast to the wedding photograph which was taken by a family friend in August 2013, after Becky's father Darren Galsworthy, 51, married Matthews' mother Anjie, 49, at a church ceremony in St George, Bristol.
Nearly 100 guests attended a reception at the nearby Bendix Club, Kingswood, where Becky and her stepbrother were seen laughing and joking together. Matthews, who held his and Hoare's young daughter in the picture, was dressed in the same grey suit and cream waistcoat as his stepfather.
Hoare and Becky wore matching blue bridesmaid dresses.
Becky vanished from her home in Bristol on the morning of February 19. Police launched a huge search operation after she was reported missing the following afternoon.
But on Monday night, detectives discovered her 'cut up' body at a house in Barton Hill, Bristol.

Becky Watts stepbrother and his girlfriend guilty of killing

Becky's body was dismembered at the home of Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare

The stepbrother of Becky Watts has been found guilty of murdering her during a sexually motivated kidnap plot.
Nathan Matthews, 28, had admitted killing and dismembering the teenager, but claimed he was only trying to scare her to teach her a lesson.
But a jury at Bristol Crown Court found him and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare guilty of conspiring to kidnap her, partly for sexual reasons.
Hoare, 21, was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter.
'Sexually motivated kidnap'
She was also convicted of perverting the course of justice by lying to police and preventing a lawful burial by dismembering and hiding Becky's body - charges Matthews had admitted.
The jury took just over three hours to convict the couple, after hearing 21 days of evidence.
As the first verdict was returned, related to kidnap, people in the public gallery began clapping and shouting "yes".
Becky's father Darren and his wife Anjie sobbed, while Matthews and Hoare remained totally emotionless.

Matthews, who gave his address as Hazelbury Drive in Warmley, South Gloucestershire, suffocated Becky at her home in Crown Hill, Bristol, on 19 February.
He then dragged her body into the boot of his car and drove it to the home he shared with his girlfriend less than two miles away in Cotton Mill Lane.
In the days that followed, Matthews bought a circular power saw, goggles, masks, bags, cling film and tape to cut up and package Becky's body.

Police initially interviewed the couple as witnesses, after they told officers they had been at Becky's home that day to help her stepmother, Matthews's mother, for whom Hoare was a registered carer.
But when they knew police would be coming to the house, on 24 February, they made arrangements to move Becky's remains to a shed at a friend's address, 80 metres away.
Hoare denied any knowledge of Becky's death and subsequent dismemberment, but the prosecution said the idea she could have been in "blissful ignorance" of events, while being with Matthews the morning of Becky's death, and throughout the days her body was dismembered, was "ridiculous".
'Sinister motive'
Speaking outside court, Detective Superintendent Mike Courtier, said their "macabre plan" had resulted in Becky's killing.
"Matthews and Hoare concocted a heinous plan to kidnap his stepsister Becky for reasons that they have failed to fully disclose, other than she occasionally left items on the floor which could have tripped up Nathan Matthews' mother.
"The body of evidence however suggested a more sinister motive related to their deep-seated hatred for Becky and their twisted sexual desires."
"They took her body back to their home in Cotton Mill Lane and began the horrific and grotesque task of dismembering her over a matter of days.
"It is virtually impossible to comprehend this level of depravity."
Becky's father Darren and his wife Anjie, who is Matthews's mother, described her as a "big-hearted" girl who was "full of life".

I am amazed.  I honestly thought that the silly girl didn't know.  Although I have to accept that it was a stretch of imagination.

Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare jailed for Becky Watts killing
9 minutes ago
From the section Bristol

Nathan Matthews has been jailed for a minimum of 33 years for murdering his stepsister Becky Watts, 16, in a sexually-motivated kidnap plot.
His girlfriend Shauna Hoare, 21, has been sentenced to 17 years for manslaughter.
At Bristol Crown Court, Judge Mr Justice Dingemans said he was sure on the evidence "that the planned kidnap of Becky was for a sexual purpose".
Matthews suffocated his stepsister at her home in Bristol on 19 February.
The judge appeared emotional as he paid tribute to Becky's family at the end of sentencing.
Judge Dingemans told Hoare she had been convicted of manslaughter because she had participated in a kidnap where any "sober and reasonable person" would have known some harm would come to Becky.
He said the case was of a "particularly high" seriousness "because of the planning of the abduction for a sexual purpose, the taking of the implements described and a weapon (albeit non lethal) and the murder of Becky".
He added: "In my judgment the behaviour of both Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare in feigning concern with the family, as the family desperately searched for Becky, is a further, and serious, aggravating feature.
"In my judgement the appropriate sentence for Mr Matthews is a mandatory life sentence, with a minimum term of 33 years. This means that Mr Matthews, as a 28-year-old man, will be 61 before he might be considered for release, and the reality is that he might never be released."

Oh, thanks!!  Will try to get it on "catch up". It is a case that very much interested me. Have you read the book by Becky's father (Darren Galsworthy)?

No, I haven't read it.

This case caught my interest too. When it hit the headlines I guessed she wouldn't be seen alive again.

Savagery, what they did to her, dismembered in the bath with a circular saw.

Shauna Hoare only got 17 years......you'll see when you watch the docu, she's evil.
