What are the implications of ‘coercive control’ in the Bamber case?
Mark Newby recently retweeted on the Sally Challen case
Sally Challen was convicted of murdering her husband David
“During the two-day appeal hearing in February, the court heard evidence relating to Mrs Challen's state of mind at the time of the killing and the issue of "coercive control".
Coercive control describes a pattern of behaviour by an abuser to harm, punish or frighten their victim and became a criminal offence in England and Wales in December 2015.

White House Farm highlights the *other* crime taking place
“Jeremy Bamber was not involved in the making of White House Farm and he has branded it a disgrace. But in the series, which is "based on extensive research, interviews and published accounts", what we get is a portrait of coercive control.

Abby Robinson states in her article,
‘The relationship between Jeremy Bamber and Julie Mugford is a key concern, showcasing a crime of a different kind.
We first meet her at Colin's party, prior to the murders, but only from a distance.
She says little in the series' early stages, only really responding when spoken to, and her sole interest is Jeremy.
Julie appears timid, largely unwilling to interact with anyone who isn't her boyfriend, as if by speaking she will shatter into a thousand pieces. And as the drama gains momentum, their relationship, and its toxicity, becomes central to the story and is instrumental in shifting the course of the police investigation.
"I want to tell you what really happened that night at White House Farm," she tells DS Stan Jones and DC Mick Clark.
Julie's decision to break her silence is a seismic change of heart for a woman who barely left his side. Whatever he said or did to her, she would swallow her pride and her hurt in exchange for his love.
But even keeping his darkest secret wasn't enough to earn his devotion.

’When Brett Collins, who Jeremy met when travelling in Australia, first arrives, the pair can't keep their hands off one another while Julie stands there, like a spare part.
They repeatedly flirt with one another in front of her, as he does with Nancy at the Bamber's wake, Julie relegated to the sidelines and forced to watch, as she is whenever someone shiny and new comes along.
When Nancy calls Jeremy at Sheila's flat, she pleads with him to stop.
"Why would you do that?" she asks, her voice trembling.
"She loves the attention," he says to Nancy, labelling her a "nutcase".
Her sorrow is palpable, her anxiety acute. This is a storm that she has been forced to weather time and time again.
The only moments of tenderness Jeremy shows her are when he feels threatened – kindness masquerading as manipulation – passionately kissing her, telling her what she wants to hear: "You're my best friend. You're my only friend. I'm on your side. I need you on my side. You know that don't you?"
There are times when Julie desperately tries to seek out his better nature, traits that she can truly love, that don't frighten her.
Jeremy and Brett sell Nevill's medals to an antique dealer and for a second, Jeremy is seemingly unwilling to let them go, which heartens her. But the switch flicks, his sadness merely a trick designed to secure an extra £10.
And yet despite that, she consoles him and holds his hand.
When Jeremy barricades himself in the kitchen after an altercation with his cousin Ann, she tries to persuade him to open the door, like a mother to a sullen five-year-old who's been told he can't have any more sweets.
She is there for him, to protect, to hold, to soothe, and to lie for, at least until the final moments of episode four.
Speaking to Bradford Zone about Julie, the actor who plays her, Alexa Davies, said: "I believe she was head over heels in love with Jeremy. It is hard to understand at first why she didn't immediately go to the police if she knew what had really happened. It's hard for people to excuse that. But it's not as black and white as that.
"I believe a huge part of her not going to the police for so long was that she genuinely loved that man, wanted that life with him and always to be with him. Turning him in would obviously end that."
-
I'm prepared to accept that their relationship was one of coercive control on Jeremy's part, and I think he probably picked her out because he knew he'd be able to. I imagine the reason she didn't recognize it as being such was because it wasn't her first experience of it.

What is coercive control?
Domestic abuse isn’t always physical. Coercive control is an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.
This controlling behaviour is designed to make a person dependent by isolating them from support, exploiting them, depriving them of independence and regulating their everyday behaviour.
We campaigned and succeeded in making coercive control a criminal offence. This has marked a huge step forward in tackling domestic abuse. But now we want to make sure that everyone understands what it is.
Coercive control creates invisible chains and a sense of fear that pervades all elements of a victim’s life. It works to limit their human rights by depriving them of their liberty and reducing their ability for action. Experts like Evan Stark liken coercive control to being taken hostage. As he says: “the victim becomes captive in an unreal world created by the abuser, entrapped in a world of confusion, contradiction and fear.”
How do you know if this is happening to you?
Some common examples of coercive behaviour are:
Isolating you from friends and family
Depriving you of basic needs, such as food
Monitoring your time
Monitoring you via online communication tools or spyware
Taking control over aspects of your everyday life, such as where you can go, who you can see, what you can wear and when you can sleep
Depriving you access to support services, such as medical services
Repeatedly putting you down, such as saying you’re worthless
Humiliating, degrading or dehumanising you
Controlling your finances
Making threats or intimidating you

I would say coersive control was definitely used by June Bamber to get her daughter to do as she wanted. She attempted it with her son, but he was less affected.

Of course, none of the mothers who employ this, would ever use the word "coercive".It was their way of ensuring their child did as it was told.

Quite a few parents do that, it's not unique to adoptive parents.
-
The fact that many parents have used coercion to control their children doesn't make it right. It wasn't how June Bamber was brought up either according to her sister.

As each child is unique, the experiences of one child in a family may be quite different from other children in the same family. Each will have their own story, true for each of them, as they experienced it.

This is someone else's family and they have many dynamics, I don't think. you or I or anyone have enough information or experience to make such sweeping statements about another family. People make the mistake in thinking that just because they have read the odd book, they know the Bamber's - you don't, I don't - many other never got the chance.

So what are the implications of ‘coercive control’ in the Bamber case?

Where and how did his campaign start and who, other than JM, has Bamber coercively controlled?

I am going on what June's sister said. Her description of their parenting was very different to the description of theirs given by the Bamber children.

Oh, he obviously told her to do that, and she’d do anything he says. She’s on another planet.
He’s so stupid, because the whole load of rubbish he wrote was all about HIM, littered with lies about how happy they all were, how he loved them so much, how Sheila was mentally ill....it was written for strangers — not to his parents.

JM apparently ‘stabbed at Bamber’s Teddy’ - not sure what with but would be interested to know if it was the same one he gave to SF ?

According to SF Bamber falsely claimed SC had ‘punched’ one of the twins - why didn’t SF report this at the time and why hasn’t she spoken out since?
Suspect it’s because she came to recognise Bamber had lied to her and had indeed murdered his family

My mother would probably have provided me with a private education if she had believed in that sort of thing and if she had been able to afford to.
My mother might have opted for using private medicine for me had I needed it if she hadn't been so pig headed about the NHS.
If she had been able to she would certainly have bought a home for me in from what I can gather was a good area in London. She loved London and being able to lodge with me for some of her jaunts would have been great for us both.
‘coercive control’ I don't know ... I only remember her doing everything in her power for me ... I rather get the impression that June Bamber did that for her daughter too.

But JB Campaign ltd appear to be knowingly promoting lies and falsehoods and defaming many victims of Bamber’s in the process ?

“In December 2015 I was very pleased to announce the launch of The JB Campaign Limited, which is a ‘Not For Profit’ Private Limited Company. Having thought long and hard about the campaign to keep Jeremy’s case in the public domain and the issues that need resolving to get traction on an Appeal, the only conclusion was that we needed to be able to raise money. Supporters often ask how they can make donations but in order to do this effectively and legitimately the decision was made by the campaign team to set up The Jeremy Bamber Campaign as a legal entity. Our aim is to raise funds towards any legal or forensic costs not currently covered Pro Bono. There is an opportunity for people to give cash using a donate button on the website, we will be offering opportunities for appropriate advertising, along with a range of merchandise. Other exciting projects are in the planning process and will be announced in due course.
I am very proud, alongside my husband Pat Benjamin, to be a Director of the organisation, and we are delighted to be working with the Campaign Management Team to maintain a high standard of business and accounting practices. In accordance, with requirements by Companies House, all monies will be accounted for and annual accounts will be filed. The Directors and Management Team give their time and expertise for free.
The decision to generate revenue in this way was taken partly because of the denigration of legal aid and the funding crisis for prisoners such as Jeremy but also because of the outrage we feel at the continued wrongful conviction and 31-year loss of liberty of an innocent man. Our hope is that campaigners and supporters, who feel as we do, will give generously to help Jeremy gain the freedom he so richly deserves.
Please look at the “Management Team” to find out more about who we are and the 'Operations' page to find out how we work.
Thank you.

It's not about what parents provide, it's why. When Jeremy Bamber was involved with an older woman with children his parents threatened to disinherit him if he didn't end the relationship. When June Bamber offered to buy July Mugford a flat in London or Colchester it was because she didn't want people to think she condoned Julie staying with Jeremy in Goldhanger. She called her a harlot.

I think it was probably along the lines of June promising whatever if Sheila complied with whatever, OR June withholding whatever if Sheila insisted on doing whatever. It's quite possible that June had some guilt feelings related to this, an example being Sheila's wedding, NOT in their local church where June and Nevill worshipped regularly, because June was ashamed of Sheila's pregnancy, but in Chelmsford Register office, with a handful of guests and a meal at Marks Tey Motel, however, June did provide the happy couple with a London residence when she could just as easily insisted on housing them locally.

Do you know what ... if my young son had been knocking about with an older woman with children, I would have been as dismayed as you accuse June and Nevill of being. I would have used any "coercive control" I had to intervene.
I think however you have highlighted causes for resentment Bamber might have nurtured for his parents regarding their power and his 'inheritance'; as well as their 'interference' in his dealings with women young and old and their obvious disapproval ... and they really didn't know the half of what he was getting up to, did they.

I'm not sure that any parent does! When I could be totally certain they wouldn't find out, they'd have been apoplectic had they known!!, I deliberately indulged in activities of which I knew they'd disapprove. With hindsight, it was my way of asserting so sort of independence and control for myself. Jeremy may have deliberately chosen women of whom the Bambers would disapprove, adding fuel to his resentment of them.

All parents have their own methods, but if threats are made they have to be prepared to carry them out. According to CAL Susan Wallace said June punished her children by stopping their pocket money but 'as soon as they wanted something they got it anyway'.[p33 Kindle ed].

I see where you’re coming from, Brietta, in respect of June. It is likely that because June herself was brought up in a monied family she saw it as normal to send her children to private school too; have private medicine when necessary; and buy them homes too.
On the other hand, it’s equally possible that June controlled them with her money, ensuring they’d do as she wanted later in life.
It’s difficult to know what June’s real reasons were...
I was sent to private school, but my parents didn’t send me as a form of control; they just believed you had a better education — so June could have thought that too.
I have private medical cover, but didn’t always. My parents used the NHS, but that was when it was properly run; didn’t have hugely long waiting lists; and was the envy of the world at one time. Sadly, the NHS is underfunded now, and that’s the only reason I have PMC. Yes, there’s other benefits too...choosing hospitals that are almost like hotels; jumping queues; lovely food (even wine if you’re allowed); excellent doctors and first class treatment — but many of those doctors who work in, say, Edward V11 hospital; Princess Grace etc...also work a couple of days in the NHS. So you’re really paying for speed and comfortable surroundings.
I suspect June sent Sheila privately (like she did herself when she had her breakdowns), to try and keep it quiet.
I did read that Jeremy was worried when June started giving the church money...

Trudie Benjamin is being crafty by inferring the company’s accounts are open for anyone to see, but they’re not: it’s a PRIVATE Limited Company. What are they hiding and why?
She writes:
“I am very proud, alongside my husband Pat Benjamin, to be a Director of the organisation, and we are delighted to be working with the Campaign Management Team to maintain a high standard of business and accounting practices. In accordance, with requirements by Companies House, all monies will be accounted for and annual accounts will be filed. The Directors and Management Team give their time and expertise for free”
She’s also implying having Directors must mean they have expertise: that’s nonsense. Anyone can be a director of a company. In fact, anyone can start a company up. Many con-artists set them up to appear honest...
I myself was a director of a small company, which I resigned from as I couldn’t stand one of the directors who thought he was running a multi-national global company and kept arranging “board meetings” to discuss the most petty, ridiculous things that could have been dealt with with one two-minute call. I’m still a shareholder, so I leave the petty squabbles to them while he struts around like a deluded puffed-up peacock. There’s always one....🙄
Back to Trudie, didn’t she take her law degree quite recently? I got the impression she did it solely for Jeremy. There’s a difference between having a law degree and being a qualified solicitor, and as she isn’t one, how can she have any expertise? She isn’t a member of the Law Society, so what has she gained by getting this degree? And what degree is it, actually? Besides having no experience, she’s completely lacking in nous and razor sharp thinking. When she was defending JB in an interview (it’s on Youtube) she was humiliated and couldn’t give one sensible answer to the man (forgotten his name) who was clearly irritated by her and seemed to find her “barking”.
She sounded as incompetent and out of her depth as she did when she read JB’s insane letter by the graveside. She certainly doesn’t come across as confident, passionate or legally trained — and she isn’t even well-spoken. She’s hesitant in her speech, seems confused, and like it or not, looks do matter. They create an impression. She doesn’t dress well; isn’t smart looking; and instils no confidence whatsoever. All the videos I’ve seen of hers, where she starts them off with that weird song with the words “SHUT UP” is so bizarre ...why does she do that, I wonder? 🤯 She always looks and sounds frumpy, talks like she is besotted with JB, and despite looking like a tired frump she has very long red fingernails which look so wrong on her. I’ve even wondered if she’s got a weird fixation with Sheila and copies her fingernails. That sounds mad, but because she’s clearly “not right” who knows what goes on in her head?
What does her husband do, I wonder? He’s obviously not a solicitor otherwise she’d have said. He must be odd too...what sort of husband would be happy with their wife obsessing over a mass murderer? Driving down to his old stomping ground? Visiting the pubs he used to go to? He’s either a total drip, or maybe he has another life of his own and let’s her get on with her obsession? Or maybe he creams off some of the donations?
They should be investigated.

I beggared myself to privately educate my children. That's it really. I sometimes wonder why.

Follow that link to Companies House , and you can look at whatever you like. According to my husband (ex-lawyer) one can see the accounts of limited companies, but not unlimited ones. Mind you, he's been retired over 10 years, so he could be wrong!!

Yes, the accounts are there and the company seems to be complying with the law. As @ 31/11/2018 there were two directors and the company had £4539 in funds. Another director was appointed in March 2020.
Your husband is correct; the accounts of Private Limited Companies can be seen, but not those of Private Unlimited Companies.

Ah, I got it wrong. I mixed up private limited companies with unlimited ones...thank you for correcting me.
I haven’t looked at their company records, but they have to be filed every year: why are there no accounts for 2019?
They get struck off if they don’t meet deadlines.

Accounts are produced after the end of the financial year. This companie's financial year ends on 31st November. Private limited companies have nine months to make up and file their accounts after their year-end. Their 2019 accounts, therefore, need to be filed by 31st August 2020.

That’s interesting...so it will show how much they have in their kitty in just a few months 😌
Must say, they only have a pittance considering all the begging they do for people to donate...
That doesn’t bode well, does it?😐

what we get is a portrait of coercive control [/i]
Is Sarah’s story and her allegations of drugging and possible sexual assault another example of coercive control ?

Bamber referred to her as ‘neurotic’

I believe it’s only men who are coercive/psychopathic who use the word “neurotic” to describe the woman they’re controlling.
It’s also a word few people who’ve not been involved in psychiatric circles uses...especially for someone who’s only 24 and is a farmer/cocktail barmanin a pizza parlour
