Title: Elite detective squad to travel to Portugal within weeks.
Post by: John on August 14, 2013, 03:07:31 AM
The Daily Express reports that an elite detective squad is to travel to Portugal within weeks in order to pursue the Madeleine McCann investigation.

I get the distinct feeling that this highly publicised effort will turn into yet another media circus and is nothing more than a case of going through the motions in an attempt to bring closure to the case.

I disagree John, I think some progress is being made and we may get some answers.

The Portuguese Police were best placed to carry out the investigation in 2007 and ultimately reported that there was no evidence of an abduction.  I cannot see that situation changing regardless how many so-called elite detectives as sent to the Algarve by Scotland Yard.

The delay in making any progress is indicative that the Portuguese are not keen to allow the UK police onto their patch since any breakthrough will inevitably refect badly on them.

There is no evidence that she is alive just as there is none that she is dead.  If her parents had cooperated with the Portuguese Police instead of running a Press campaign against them then the outcome might well have been so different.

So many questions...too few answers!

Of course they were best placed at the time - but the question is did they ?? many argue that they didn't pursue any other strategy apart from parental involvement and in reality they archived the case without really having a clue what happened

If what SY have said is true and there are a ton of unfollowed leads to pursue then surely this is a good thing. Whatever views you might have about who " dunnit " it is positive that SY are able to provide some fresh eyes on the case.

It might all end up going nowhere - but I am far more happier that there is something happening that might unearth a snippet that could lead to solving the mystery - that is what policing does - go back and look at all statements and start again - basic police work

I think that you will find that it was not The Mccanns who contacted them

What were the false facts put out by The Mccanns?   Cites please.

Have you forgotten all the false information (disinformation) put out about the Mccanns and the Tapas group?

Have you forgotten all the false information (disinformation) put out about the Mccanns and the Tapas group?

It was the McCanns relatives who telephoned the various news media outlets after having been briefed by the parents.

According to the police investigation, false information included the claim that the shutters had been forced, that an intruder had entered the childrens bedroom via the bedroom window and had  left the front door open.

John - are you suggesting that that the PJ were relying on second / third / fourth hand press comment for their information?  Rather than interviews and statements with witnesses actually present?

Mind you, what with the Co-ordinator having been made an arguido himself a day or so before, and the use of amateur translators, that might figure.

(as it happens, I think the PJ in general are far more professional than that, and that you have been reading too many forum myths).

They saw the reports for themselves in the news.  They didn't need statements from anyone to realise what was going on.

It is with a lot of incredulity that almost straight away the McCann's suddenly become this pair of master manipulators who could crack the whip and control the UK red tops to get their message subtlety out there .Brief all the relatives with clever  story lines that would confuse the PJ and other law enforcement agencies

persuade their friends to lie for them and risk everything to become accessories to s hideous crime

OH and of course get the UK government to begin to organise a huge cover up that included Prime ministers and ambassador's  - get the Pope blessing and dictate to the police the agenda

sorry almost forgot dispose of a body in a matter of minutes - leaving no forensic evidence atall - nothing  hide the body , move the body in a bag , hire car .............  I mean it just goes on

The Portuguese have been very quick in accepting the request of the CPS. In an attempt of balance they could have postponed it a few months. They didn't, which is very positive.
Whereas the PJ spent 14 months on the case, the Met, which didn't have to collect the data, spent twice that time and haven't yet reviewed more than 2 thirds of the documents.
If the Met by chance resolves the case, the Portuguese will legitimately argue they would have resolved it as well, had they had been granted more time.  Their time was limited not only because of Mr Murat's arguido status but mainly because the McCanns didn't require the inquiry they were entitled to (likely because their priority was the removal of the arguido status).

John

Over the past week I have waded thru virtually all the Tapas statements + the Wilkins + the waiters etc etc. and I am pretty sure that one of the Tapas or The Wilkins notified one branch of the media.  I think it was one of the Tapas group and IIRC it was done off their own bat without reference to the Mccanns.

I am trying to remember now, cos i aint wading thru that lot again in a hurry ... made my eyes bleed !  I have a feeling that one of the Tapas was talking to a friend about it and that friend had close connections to the media and offered to get something going.
Thanks DCI.  Now we have absolutely the correct information

Jez and /or Bridget had close connections with Crimewatch.  I think that Bridget actiually worked on Crimewatch, and she was very aware of how important the first two hours were.  She, or he, describes how they watched the chaos of the PT police, from their balcony, with sinking hearts because the first period was such a mess, so chaotic.... and she realised that probably Madeleine was completely lost.

Jes had asked if they needed help searching and was told there was nothing he could do; she had been missing for three hours. Jes felt he should go anyway, but I wanted him to stay with us. I was a coward, afraid to be alone with the children - and afraid to be alone with my thoughts...
From the balcony we could see some figures scratching at the immense darkness with tiny torch lights. Police cars arrived and we thought that they would take control. We lay on the bed but we could not sleep.

Extracts from:
My months with Madeleine The Guardian by Bridget O'Donnell

I knew that Bridgets heart sank for Madeleine, but this was the main reason:
http://www.mccannfiles.com/id96.html

Later, there was a knock on our apartment door and we let the two men in. One was a uniformed Portuguese policeman, the other his translator. The translator had a squint and sweated slightly. He was breathless, perhaps a little excited. We later found out he was Robert Murat. He reminded me of a boy in my class at school who was bullied.

Through Murat we answered a few questions and gave our details, which the policeman wrote down on the back of a bit of paper. No notebook. Then he pointed to the photocopied picture of Madeleine on the table. "Is this your daughter?" he asked. "Er, no," we said. "That's the girl you are meant to be searching for." My heart sank for the McCanns.

This lady not only doesn't hesitate to publish her negative feelings about someone she just saw once, Mr Murat, but lacks singularly coherence when "her heart sank for the McCanns" despite having written just before : Madeleine must have been there, but I couldn't distinguish her from the others. They all looked the same - all blonde, all pink and pretty.

Furthermore.

Our baby would not sleep and at about 8.30pm, Jes took him out for a walk in the buggy to settle him. Gerry was on his way back from checking on his children and the two men stopped to have a chat. They talked about daughters, fathers, families. Gerry was relaxed and friendly. They discussed the babysitting dilemmas at the resort and Gerry said that he and Kate would have stayed in too, if they had not been on holiday in a group. Jes returned to our apartment just before 9.30pm. We ate, drank wine, watched a DVD and then went to bed. On the ground floor, a completely catastrophic event was taking place. On the fourth floor of the next block, we were completely oblivious.

At 1am there was a frantic banging on our door. Jes got up to answer. I stayed listening in the dark. I knew it was bad; it could only be bad. I heard male mumbling, then Jes's voice. "You're joking?" he said. It wasn't the words, it was the tone that made me flinch. He came back in to the room. "Gerry's daughter's been abducted," he said. "She ..." I jumped up and went to check our children.
They were there. We sat down. We got up again. Weirdly, I did the washing-up. We wondered what to do. Jes had asked if they needed help searching and was told there was nothing he could do; she had been missing for three hours. Jes felt he should go anyway, but I wanted him to stay with us. I was a coward, afraid to be alone with the children - and afraid to be alone with my thoughts.

I once worked as a producer in the BBC crime unit. I directed many reconstructions and spent my second pregnancy producing new investigations for Crimewatch. Detectives would call me daily, detailing their cases, and some stories stay with me still, such as the ones about a girl being snatched from her bath, or her bike, or her garden and then held in the passenger seat, or stuffed in the boot. There was always a vehicle, and the first few hours were crucial to the outcome. Afterwards, they would be dumped naked in an alley, or at a petrol station with a £10 note to "get a cab back to Mummy". They would be found within an hour or two. Sometimes.

From the balcony we could see some figures scratching at the immense darkness with tiny torch lights. Police cars arrived and we thought that they would take control. We lay on the bed but we could not sleep.

The next morning, we made our way to breakfast and met one of the Doctors, the one who had come round in the night. His young daughter looked up at us from her pushchair. There was no news. They had called Sky television - they didn't know what else to do. He turned away and I could see he was going to weep.

The reason Bridget O'Donnell, wrote this article in December 2007.

Throughout all this, I have always believed that Gerry and Kate McCann are innocent. When they were made suspects, when they were booed at, when one woman told me she was "glad" they had "done it" because it meant that her child was safe, I began to write this article - because I was there, and I believe that woman is wrong. There were no drug-fuelled "swingers" on our holiday; instead, there was a bunch of ordinary parents wearing Berghaus and worrying about sleep patterns. Secure in our banality, none of us imagined we were being watched. One group made a disastrous decision; Madeleine was vulnerable and was chosen. But in the face of such desperate audacity, it could have been any one of us.

The British police came round shortly after our return. Jes was pleased to give them a statement. The Portuguese police had never asked.Bridget O'Donnell is a writer and director.

The fee from this article will be donated to the Find Madeleine fund[/b]

So many questions...too few answers!

the Portuguese police were best placed but I don't think they had the competence to handle the investigation. I think it will be very interesting to see what SY come up with. They certainly wont be asking anyone to prove their innocence.

Where do you get the idea that the parents ran a press campaign against the PJ?

The only public criticism came from the initial family interviews when they were panicking and mistakenly thought that nothing much was happening (and one comment from Kate when she eventually described Amaral as a disgrace).

Other than that, the parents don't seem to have criticised them at all, as far as I'm aware.

No one can control the British tabloids... they are a law unto themselves. They find an angle and run with it.

It is one thing producing a timeline for a forum, but an entirely different matter for the Police to accept and use a time line and viewpoints from an amateur.  To effectively make them Official

Yep. From memory, somewhere in the files, there's a mention of a British news (broadcasting?) service ringing in the night to confirm the story. As Sky had said that they didn't learn of it until they watched GMTV, I assume that that would have been the BBC ringing. According to Kate's book, David Payne had borrowed someone's computer in the night to send an email to Sky, but they didn't see it. Once they did wake up, they then contacted the family. At least that's my recollection of the sequence of events.

Actually, the first mention of the disappearance in the press seems to have come from the Foreign Office.

Three year-old feared abducted in Portugal Telegraph

Last Updated: 12:01am BST 04/05/2007

A three-year-old British girl has gone missing while on a family holiday in Portugal, the Foreign Office said today.

Portuguese police are investigating the disappearance from a holiday complex in Praia da Luz in the western Algarve.

A Foreign Office spokesman said that he understood the girl's parents had gone to have dinner once their children were asleep last night, but returned to check on them only to find the girl had gone missing.

"They reported it straight away," he said, adding that consular assistance was being offered.

I don't think the PJ did. A poster probably compiled it from various documents in the files. If that's the case, it might be more appropriate in Pamalam's other blog.

Fair enough, if Ed Smart had actually been given permission to say that in public. But that doesn't equate to running an anti-PJ campaign as, by that time, they were wondering if they were being stiched up.

Seems more likely to me that whilst chatting, Gerry was simply sharing his thoughts and fears with a the father of another girl that had gone missing.

The fact is Mr McCann, the (rather dramatic) day he, after his wife, was made arguido, remembered to call Mr Smart. If the planting suggestion was confidential, he would have protested, don't you think ?
I agree it's not properly speaking an "anti-PJ campaign". But I reckon the McCanns (especially Mr McCann whose talent in orchestrating we see in his reconstruction documentary) rarely speak openly, they mainly do it by proxy. It started with the shutters, broken for the family/friends, just open for the police. Though they likely didn't foresee it,  this "victims campaign" spread very successfully.

Sorry John don't know how my reply has come out like this as I scrolled down  before replying.

The Portuguese police said there was no evidence of an abduction.    Yet SY are going down the route of abduction.

The Portuguese police said they would open the case unless new evidence was found.    SY have found new evidence and now it has turned into an inquiry.

You can't see anything changing?    Well I can.    I can see a lot that have changed already.

The parents did co-operate with the police.    Even though they thought more or less straight away that Madeleine had been abducted.   They made statements they give DNA they answered all the questions asked them.

Only when it was obvious that the Portuguese police were not searching for Madeleine anymore and believed that the parents had faked an abduction and hidden her body did things change.

I might well come across as cynical where SY and any new investigation is concerned but I have good reason for it.

When investigators are conducting a proper inquiry into a crime they do so behind the scenes and not in the full glare of press scrutiny.  The way they have gone about the Madeleine case therefore leaves me with no confidence that they are serious in their intentions.

Look at it another way.  Just say for instance that Madeleine is still alive and living somewhere.  The minute her keepers get a whiff of anyone on their trail they will move her or make life so difficult for her.

Had SY been serious about a proper reinvestigation of the case it would have been done quietly and for the most part in secret.  They have now lost that advantage having chosen to blab to the press in what can only be seen as an attempt to make them look good.

I honestly believe they have given the McCanns false hope.

I can't find another explanation but whom can they hope to convince ? Not the McCanns for sure. Yet they say they're delighted...

They have only given away the fact that they have so many people of interest John, they don't name names.

I would expect any interviewing would be done privately,  though how do you keep the media away?

Yes, they do and I presume most of this work is already done, before being released.
