Title: A look at the various alleged sightings of Madeleine.
Post by: sadie on August 29, 2013, 12:20:07 AM
Sighting:

I have always thought that this little girl was Madeleine.  Photograph taken near Zinat in the Rif Mountains of Morocco.  Raymond Hewlett camped just 25 miles further down the same road in Chefchaouen at the same time.

And I've walked by the very service station where someone 'spotted' Madeleine in Marrakech. What does that prove ?

BTW the two photographs posted are of the same woman and child.

No they are not.
Particularly the little girls are altogether different.

What? That little girl is obviously about 2 years old.

She looks nothing like Madeleine. Is that really the best you've got?

I despair, I really do.

Of course they're the same. One photograph is simply more out of focus than the other.

And I have also thought that the little girl in the orange top looks remarkably like Joana Cipriano.

Joana, abducted in Sep 2004 aged 7or 8, (reports differ) so when this photo was taken, she would have been 10 or 11 years old.

Somewhere there is a much clearer copy of this photo.

And then I have always felt that this little girl looks very like Madeleine with a new hairstyle and completely different look.  A Scottish kilt in green and red tartan, worn long and aran type sweater.

Totally differrent look from the modern way that Kate dressed Madeleine, but the same sort of mannerisms and movement, IMO

How observant of the bank guard to realise the possible significance of this little girl, with her Moroccan nanny

Well shona you are saying
FFS, that child is about 2 years old.

Are you mad?
... and another equally rude comment about me

And conversely Faithlilly is saying :
BTW the two photographs posted are of the same woman and child. ... faith says words to that effect twice

Now is either of you right?  Or are you just rubbishing me for the sake of it?

I googled the words, * madeleine mccannbushra age? born?morocco *    to bring up websites about it and came across an Express website that said Bushra was 5 years old, page 7

http://www.anorak.co.uk/176596/madeleine-mccann/madeleine-mccann-bushra-binhisa-bouchra-benaissa-and-the-irishman.html/

When I opened this webpage I could find no reference of that fact, but then page 7 had vanished and that is where it was written.

As you can see from the Google information on the googlepage, it was definitely shown at one time.  Try googling those words above yourself and you will get:

h27 Sep 2007 - bouchra2.thumbnail Madeleine McCann: Bushra Binhisa, Bouchra Benaissa And The Irishman ... The Madeleine lookalike seen in Morocco – we'll she's blonde-ish – is Bushra Binhisa. ... In the Express she is aged 5. Page 7:      http://www.ksdk.com/images/640/360/2/assetpool/images/07926115945_mccann.jpg

So who is right then?  You cant both be right.   Are you just trolling me, for the sake of it?  Is that a form of bullying?  And I see Lyall is at it too.  Put the boot in guys!

Who is right  then? :  Shona or Faith ..... or quite probably me?

Subject : Report seeing Madeleine in Marrakesh the 9th of May 10 am.

At the petrol station next to Hotel Ibis Palmeraie in Marrakesh. Address. Avenue Abdelkrim Khattabi. Wednesday 9th of May, about 10 am. I saw the girl inside the shop. She was wearing a clear blue pyjamas. Some pattern on the top, trousers little darker. Don't think the trousers had any pattern. She was very small. Under 1 meter. She was with a man. She was standing alone, the man about a meter from her. I looked at her because she was very sweet. And it was a strange situation because the man didn't look like her father. And its very strange to see a blond small girl standing alone in Marrakesh. She was very small and normally you would hold her in your arms or at least her hand. And the man was turning away from her. She looked sad. I looked in her face, she looked at me. Then she turned to the man and said something that sounds like : Can we see mommy soon ? : I am not sure if he reply. I turned around to pay my things, 2 bottle of water and some hygiene serviettes. I went in our car, looked for if they had a car, but could not see any special. I wanted to tell my husband , but we went busy with the driving to catch the ferry from Tangier to Tarifa. I didn't know about the missing child at that time. Because I had not watching the news when I was on holiday.

I saw the news on Thursday the 10th of may, in the evening. Then I remember what I saw in Marrakesh.

I started to phone the Police, Spanish and English.

The Spanish Police didn't want to talk to me. I talked to the English. Friday morning I gave my report to Katy Peters at Scotland Yard. She said someone was going to phone me. But I have not heard anything. I have emailed them and phone them several times. But no response. I am very worried and very sure that this was that girl. Her face is very special. And that situation was very strange !

My mind is on this situation all the time, and I need to know if someone are looking into my report. I am sure the two Morrocan men inside the petrol station can confirm my seeing as well.

If I can do anything more to help, PLEASE let me know !

How many blond haired little girls are there in the world ?

Yes there are Arabic people with blond hair.

Mommy or Mummy ?

I wonder how many children cry out for that ?

etc., etc., etc.

Well according to that lady 'it was strange to see a little blond girl'  the man didn't look like the father,  he was standing away from her.

'Mommy or Mummy'  well it would maybe depend on which the person writing the article says, I have seen 'mummy'  in other reports about this sighting.

I think it strange he didn't pay much attention to the little girl,  also she didn't say 'can we see mummy soon, daddy'.

The last time we were in Marrakesh a very disturbing thing happened to my hubby.  It was disturbing for me too.

I tend to wander off slightly and look around every corner.  So my hubby was walking about 5 or so  yards away from me.  To a casual onlooker, he probably looked alone.  He must have paused.

A little girl of about 6 years of age, suddenly came out and put her arms tightly around my hubbies leg and looked up into his eyes.  He was shocked ... frozen .... not knowing what was going on ....what to do ... and looked over at me.  As soon as I appeared and was obviously with him, the little girl must have been called away.

It seemed an offer to him and we were both shaken up by it.

Marrakesh is a hive of human activity.  An amazing and interesting place, hence our repeated visits.
Not suitable for young kids really ... cos vehicles everywhere, rushing around.    Not many Brits would chose to take a young girl to such a place as Marrakesh on holiday.  Not the right sort of place for little western kids.

I doubt that Madeleine was there for any nasty purposes, cos too many Brits visit and would have noticed her.

Most Morrocans are darkish skinned with black hair and most wore Muslim type clothes.

Noticeably there are few blond kids there.  I cant remember any. ... so it is indeed a possibility that this sighting was of Madeleine.

Yes Sadie it could have been Madeleine.

There was another sighting by an hotel not far from the garage,   the man said he saw a child that resembled Madeleine.

The report said that this man knew nothing at all about the other sighting in the garage.

British and Spanish reporters claim they have found the girl in the photograph who some believed might have been Madeleine McCann. London's Evening Standard says the girl is actually a 5-year-old from the village of Zinat in Morocco, the BBC reports.

But that little girl,Bushra, doesn't look a bit like the photograph taken of the blond girl being carried.
Bushra is altogether more bonny looking.  By bonny, I mean sturdier whilst Madeleine is more fragile looking.

The photographs showing the two girls, side by side, in an earlier post trouble me because the Madeleine photograph is of a MUCH younger Madeleine ... and her features had changed dramatically by the time of her abduction.

This photo of Madeleine in the white hat seems better to me.

You do need to get off your cultural bias.

First, in countries were there is tourism and severe cases of poverty, children learn that by showing deep affection they may obtain money...

Second, there are more blonde and blue eyed arabic people in the Middle East and North Africa than in Europe.

In fact, I would go as far as to say that the photo on the left was manipulated digitally.  Did those tourists receive any money for the original?

I don't think that any of the press reports (with photos) were her.

There may be others that haven't featured in the press or files which haven't been sufficently investigated.

There's a difference.

After six years and no trail whatsoever it is very worrying.  I don't think it will ever be known what really happened to her or who was responsible.
what annoys me is pros  care only about gerry and kates welfare not maddies everything is aboiut gerry and kate  they dont care about maddies or other childrens welfare they just life in a fantasy world where the mcanns are innocent period maddie is alive and unharmed etc when most  normal people know  that   if a child is abducted it isnt like that at  ALL   and  as much as the pros hate being  reminded  whatever did happen it was  from  neglectful/abandonment actions by  kate and gerry mcann

exactly that little girl was  traumatised by the uk media at the time     for being maddies supposed  look alike  that poor child i hope she has   forgotten now and in answer to what denial the denail where the pros live in a fantasy  land where maddie is alive and unharmed after   6 years  if maddie truly is alive now she would NOT be alive  and unharmed

If you don't have proof that Madeleine is dead, why object to the possibility that she may be alive?

A poor girl in the US was recently found alive - even though it would seem that it had been assumed that she had been a runaway.

You wouldn't have liked to have been effectively kidnapped and held for years with no one looking for you, would you?

what diffrence a little girl was splashed around the world for  looking like millons of little girls around the world  was it fair to traumatise boushka  for being mistaken for maddie ??     NO it  wasnt

The documentary by Aljazeera helped to give the background to the media frenzy.

Have you watched it?

You may find that ways of expressing what may have happened are euphemisms, particularly if sound bites are likely to be quoted on TV or radio that children may question.

Look again

A rather sickly looking Madeleine or Bushra?

Notice
1) the hair colour
2) the length of the fringe
3)  type of hair in general
4)  The skin colour
5)  The way that Bushra is much bigger and sits much higher
6)  Had Bushras legs been able to sit behind the carrier, she would have been pushed higher still.
7)  The interest in what is going on .. a sign of intellect

And then there is a man pushing a wagon (photo not shown yet).  The wagon has suitcases on it.  From my experiences in Morocco ... and we have driven around a bit, I think it unlikely that a peasant family would possess suitcases.  These people were going somewhere, somewhere special ... a flight?  A boat trip?  Dunno...

.... but Hewlett was only about 25 miles down the same road, the N2, at Chefchaouen

... and he said that he was not involved in Madeleines abduction, but he had seen her twice

It was about this time that he received a phone call and packed up quickly and left.  Was he picking them up, en route, for his sailing home?

Did he bring her across in his van with his 6 children (and his gathered spare parts for Mercedes that he was flogging in Morocco )?

Zinat was en route for him from port to camping ground.  The N2 South, down from Tetouan, after about 10 miles goes thru Zinat ... and goes on another 25 miles to Chefchaouen where he camped.

Hmmm?  >@@(*&)

Btw Luz ... you are wrong.

Bushra was 5 y.o. according to reports.   Madeleine 4 y.o.   So you got that the wrong way around didn't you?

Wrong again Sadie.  Bushra was born on 24 October 2004 which by August/September 2007 when the photos were taken would make her nearly 3 and not 5 as some idiot reporters alleged.

At the time the photos were taken she was then over a year younger than Madeleine.

I firmly believe however that the original photo was doctored in order to give the impression it was Madeleine.  You only have to look closely at that photograph to see green blotches where there shouldn't be any. Why would anyone do such a thing?

The photo on the right was taken a few days later by investigative journalists sent to Morocco to find out the truth.

So now, the little girl in the orange top walking in front of ?Madeleine being carried.

Is she Jaona Cipriano ?  ... photo taken three years on since she was abducted ...  So now aged about 11 years.

1)  May I suggest that you enlarge the group photo in order to see the little girls ears sticking out and then compare to the top LH photo of Joana.  Have a good look at the face too .... pluck the eyebrows ... and compare the shape and the proportions ... hair colour too ... not Berber, nor Arabic colouring ... but the darkening hair colouring, as she gets older, of a little girl who started off blond?

Now have a good look at the legs, knee down.  Taking into account the leg growth in the older girl, and looking at the left leg in each case, they are dead ringers !  Both images have a well curved outer calf but very little inner calf.  Take into account the fact that the knee is a little bent in the walking girl.

The ankles are difficult to assess because the foot is at a different angle, but there appears to be a likeness of type again

Am expecting a lot of silly comments .... cos the [ censored word] dont want this to be Madeleine and Joana, .... do they?

And the girl on the womans back looks like a slightly off colour Madeleine, not a robust girl like Bushra.  Bushra is too big.  Madeleine is dainty and fitted behind the back of the carrier at a lower level.

Are you aware Angelo that children are kept in groups in Northern Morocco for unmentionable purposes?  Hopefully because of her distinctive eye, the worlds Media watching and important people taking a close interest in the case, Madeleine has been protected and not subjected to this abuse.

Was that photo of Bushra photoshopped? The blurred one doesn't even look like the real child.

I'm not convinced that the other (older) child is Joana, although there is a certain similarity.

I'm not convinced about what is alleged to have happened to little Joana. I haven't found any hard evidence that she is dead, and so she might also be alive somewhere.

Can you explain why the world's media watching and important people being involved means that Madeleine would be protected? How does that work exactly?

Just one thing, Angelo. have you been to Morroco?   Cos three of those women are dressed seriously smartly for Moroccan women.

Somewhere there used to be a normal sized image of the tiny image you have shown within the larger photograph ... and on that you will see that there are at least 3 suitcases on the trolley + a carry on bag.

If you enlarge the tiny image ....
view
zoom
400%
.....you will see the suitcases clearly

You will also see that the first woman is carrying what looks like a suitcase from her shoulder
and  ... The woman in black is carrying a suitcase complete with luggage label
They were all dressed up with their bags and they were going somewhere special ... and for a length of time.

Tetouan international airport is about 17 miles away by road.   The port of Cueta is a further 25 miles past there .same road

Cueta is a tiny part of Spain in Morocco.  Like we have a tiny bit of Spain called Gibraltar.  The two places face each other across the Straits .... and Cueta in Morocco is known for having very poor border controls

Now there was a very convincing sighting very near Cueta by a Spanish Moroccan doctor

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-491459/Six-months-Madeleine-Is-Moroccan-village-holds-key-disappearence.html

Some reports say they were spotted in the market place.  Could Madeleine have been brought into Cueta from some other country, then thru the poor border control into Morocco and when sighted have been stocking up with stuff at Fnideq, the very first place into Morocco.  Morocco is cheap.

Only thoughts but there is more that seems to link

Some other time maybe .......

Cueta is within Morocco, as Gibraltar is within Spain.  Anyone sailing into Cueta Port from Europe will NOT have to go thru customs to get into Cueta, which is part of mainland Morocco.  So no border controls to get on to mainland Morocco.  Cueta is only about 3-5 miles in each direction ... so a pretty tiny place .... but it is part of Spain within Morocco

To get from Cueta to actual Morocco, one has to pass thru a border control border between Cueta and Morocco but according to this article, it is a chaotic, badly-policed frontier ... and money opens doors in Morocco

A grim, soulless place where a dusty sea-wind whistles constantly through the narrow streets and the darkened bazaars seeth with intrigue, the Moroccan town of Fnideq is Africa's last settlement.

Just around the headland of its northern tip, beyond a chaotic, badly-policed frontier, stands Ceuta, the Spanish-owned equivalent of Gibraltar. And across the shimmering straits, so close that the houses are clearly visible, lies the jagged coastline of Europe, an El Dorado for the great many shadowy types who pass this way.

The woman in your Daily Mail article was paid for her 'eye witness' account:

https://www.levesoninquiry.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Exhibit-NP6-to-ws-of-Nicole-Patterson.pdf

Journalist John Chapman paid Naoual Malhi of  Urbanacion Calahonda Royele, Mijas Costa on the 2nd of November 500 euros for her Madeleine eyewitness account. That payment taints her evidence.

No wonder I couldn't see it!

The copy isn't very clear, but it seems like €600, not €500.

An issue could be whether that was to simply to cover travel / accommodation and whoever may have needed a cash sum in situ (i.e. not intended for her own personal profit).

I have no opinion on this, one way or the other.

It is very much a western / European perspective that receiving money for something would taint a person's credibility.

A European can afford to take time to consider the propriety and implications of taking money for something. It's often considered seedy, even when morally OK.

In a poor country, people buy and sell without impunity as a matter of necessity. Little thought is given to the transaction and therefore it doesn't carry the same suggestion of ulterior motive.

Same goes in America - everything has a price tag, end of story.

The maybe so Sherlock but if evidence was brought before a court in the UK that had been sold to a tabloid first, that evidence, rightly or wrongly, would be tainted.

In what sense was it "evidence"? Nothing related to the crime scene area.

Ok, but your previous comment was:

I'm not sure what you meant by that. What evidence to be brought before which court for which purpose?

Nope. I don't have an opinion on this as I don't know what that amount was intended to cover. If the amount had been broken down, it would be easier to come to a conclusion.

Very interesting Sherlock.  So what we westerners might consider bribery is considered a normal business transaction by a person from a poor country. Never realised that before altho I had noticed what i considerd "rum" dealings in Eastern Countries.  Seems I was wrong and that they wre normal dealings according to the standards of the country.

Now this Naoual Malhi comes from Fez, in Morocco, which struck me as mighty poor when I visited.  Although a Doctor and coming from a wealthy family apparently, quite probably her mores would come from her family and fellows in Morocco ... We had dealings with a wealthy Moroccan family and they were charm personified and were givers, not takers.

So Faith, I think in this case we can ignore any monies that might have been paid .... especially as she had been put to considerable inconvenience and expence by her search ... and it is stated "She has asked for no money in return for her information",

From
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-491459/Six-months-Madeleine-Is-Moroccan-village-holds-key-disappearence.html

We also get:

Quote

Of course, Naoual Malhi, a divorcee, may turn out to be one more unsound witness. Or she could simply be mistaken in what she saw. However, she does not appear to be a crank.

Plausible and unexcitable, she is a qualified doctor and says she hails from a well-to-do family from Fez, Morocco's religious and cultural capital. She has asked for no money in return for her information, and much of it has been verified.

It was in late September, at the end of a fortnight's holiday in Morocco, that Naoual first spotted the girl she now refers to unequivocally as "Madeleine" near Fnideq's outdoor market.

Additionally she says

Quote
Naoual, for her part, believes Madeleine is languishing somewhere in the country of her birth.

"I know some people will think it sounds fantastic when you start talking about little European blonde girls being kidnapped, taken to Morocco and sold," she says. "But I am Moroccan and I think it is totally feasible.

"It's a very secretive country and there are a lot of girls who are stolen and held in cellars, to be sold for sex.

"I don't want a penny for my story. All I want is for Madeleine to be found safe and well, and reunited with her parents. She is in Morocco. I'm sure of it."

So was this little girl Madeleine, or not?

There is much more that I could add but will desist .  Atm anyhow 8(0(* @)(++(*

The Sun

New Maddie File

By ANTONELLA LAZZERI

A HOARD of CCTV shots and sightings of girls looking like Maddie McCann are revealed for the first time today - after The Sun gained access to a hidden police file.

Shockingly, Portuguese cops failed to follow up most leads in the explosive dossier.

The 2,000-page file, buried away at a police HQ, contains CCTV photos of little girls just like Maddie and hundreds of leads, including more than 50 sightings.

Most were ignored by Portuguese police on the case, many of whom have admitted they believe Maddie is dead.

Reports were filed away with the observation: "Not relevant to the investigation".

The documents were never even shown to Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry, who were stunned when they saw the contents recently.

Details can finally be made public after The Sun requested a state prosecutor for access to the file.

Two of the CCTV images were taken in New Zealand on December 5, 2007, and forwarded to Portuguese police by Interpol.

In one photo a little blonde girl peeps out from under her fringe as she is led into a shop by a portly man wearing shorts.

In the other the girl is seen leaving the shop with the man and a little boy.

She has the same hairstyle as Maddie when she went missing on May 3 that year from a holiday apartment in Portugal aged three.

A female security guard saw the girl at a store in Dunedin, New Zealand, and thought she could be Maddie.

The girl and the man had British accents. When the guard approached the girl and asked her name, the child replied "Hailey".

Despite the obvious similarity to Maddie, Kate and Gerry were never asked to study the photos

Sightings in the file came from across Europe and even America and Hong Kong. Here is a sample:

A little girl who looked like Maddie was seen with a shirtless man near a toll on the A20 motorway in France on August 30, 2008.

French lorry driver Michel Guidard said the girl was wearing a dirty yellow jumper but was naked from the waist down.

He stopped and approached - but the man pulled out a handgun and threatened him.

A British man called George reported seeing a small blonde, distressed girl being dragged along the road to Faro airport, Portugal, on the night she went missing.

That is 60 miles away from the resort of Praia da Luz where Maddie and her family were staying.

A girl described as "a little elf" - in a pyjama top like the one Maddie had on when she was taken - was spotted being "summoned" from a shop near Murcia, Spain, by an "unkempt" man 12 days later.

In August 2008, a woman reported a Newcastle man acting suspiciously in Villamoura, 50 miles from Praia da Luz.

She says the man, who she also saw in May 2006, took pictures of her children.

In July 2008, a Scottish mum reported seeing a blonde girl who looked like Madeleine in Albufeira, Portugal, with a group of gipsies.

A dark-haired woman with the girl ran off down a hill with her when police turned up.

That month alone, three other sightings were reported - two in France and one in Turkey.

A sighting of a girl in Frankfurt, Germany, even included the car registration number of a suspect.

A sighting in Algeria in September 2008 said a little girl with a British accent was with a family who behaved suspiciously.

The dossier says a British-registered white Mercedes box van with fake number plates travelled to Tangiers, Morocco, from Tarifa, Spain, between May 1 and May 10, 2007. It has never been found.

The McCanns believe Maddie could have been whisked away to Morocco by child traffickers within hours of her being taken.

In June 2008 in Sorrento, Italy, a British holidaymaker said he saw a girl like Maddie in the window of a building with a bricked-up door.

A report from Spokane, Washington State, USA, said a girl like Maddie was seen on October 9, 2008, with a Portuguese man.

According to an informant, he ran a child trafficking operation.

Chillingly, the file also contains information sent by Lieutenant Emilie Moreau of the French police about a photo of a little girl being sexually abused on a website.

She told the Portuguese: "We think the girl looks like Maddie."

Inspector Paiva replied: "There is nothing relevant. The girl does not physically resemble Madeleine."

Another report of a child like Maddie being abused on the internet came from Italy.

The reports were put away in a file collated at Portimao Police Headquarters by Inspector Ricardo Paiva, the McCanns' liaison officer, after the case was shelved in July 2008.

Kate and Gerry, both 41, only learnt the buried file existed when it was referred to during their recent court case against ex-police boss Goncalo Amaral in Lisbon.

Amaral, who headed the initial investigation into Maddie's disappearance wrote a book, claiming Maddie was dead and her parents lied about her abduction.

The couple, from Rothley, Leicestershire, won a ban on the book. Their lawyer Isabel Duarte then applied for a copy of the dossier.

And after studying it, she told us: "It is a disgrace that none of this information was given to Kate and Gerry.

"Some of the photos are shockingly similar to Madeleine."

Angry Gerry said recently of the filed treasure trove of leads: "We're gutted. If you don't investigate information, you won't solve it."

Yesterday a source close to the McCanns said: "They are extremely angry that this file has been sitting in an office collecting dust. It's an outrage and a disgrace."

Spokesman Clarence Mitchell added: "They're incredibly frustrated this file was sitting there being disregarded by the Portuguese police.

"They were shocked when they saw the scale of the information and the lack of action taken.

"There are potential leads in the file that are now being followed up by our own investigators."

‘I sold Maddie ice-cream,’ claims witness

A new witness in Brussels has claimed he saw Madeleine McCann.

Ice cream vendor Antonio Migliardi said he saw the little girl at his street stall with a woman in the Belgian capital.

The “sighting” comes just a day after a bank security guard said he saw the missing child in the street in the city.

Mr Migliardi said the girl, who looked “very sad”, had a distinctive eye mark like Madeleine.

He told the Sun: “The woman was very severe with the child.

“She held her hand closely and kept pulling her closer. When I gave the ice cream to the child she stood frozen.

“Normally a happy child always takes the ice. This was not a normal situation.”

The incident took place eight days ago.

A spokesman for Madeleine’s parents said private investigators would investigate the claims.

Private detectives are also trying to track down the Arabic-looking woman filmed with a blonde youngster in Brussels last Monday. Now experts in the US hired by the McCanns are analysing the security camera clips to enhance the quality of the images and extract further clues.

A source close to the McCanns’ investigators said it was surprising that the woman captured on CCTV had not contacted Belgian police if there was an innocent explanation.

I saw Maddie sleeping in the back of white van a day after her abduction

Claims from a new witness that Madeleine McCann was drugged and kept in the back of a white van in after being snatched in Portugal are being urgently looked into by private investigators, it has been reported.

Carlos Moreira, 65, believes he saw the four-year-old the day after she was taken from a hotel room in Praia da Luz on May 3 2007.

He said the girl he saw was wearing pyjamas that are identical to those Maddie was known to be wearing when abducted.

Many other witnesses have also reported seeing a white van hanging around near the apartment in the Algarve in the lead up to the disappearance.

Mr Moreira told The Sun: “I saw a white van with the back door open. I saw a girl, lying on a pile of clothes in the back. She was wearing a two-piece pyjama set, pink and white or yellow…

“When the door was opened, she did not wake up, as if she was drugged.”

He identified the van driver from a previously unpublished e-fit of a suspect, the newspaper reported.

He said the man was in his early forties and ‘looked like a gipsy’. He was accompanied by an older woman in her early sixties.

The sighting happened 160 miles away from Praia da Luz.

He only realised he may have seen Maddie after he watched a TV show questioning why roads to the north of the abduction were not shut.

Mr Moreira saw the van on a route to the north of the resort.

I saw Maddie on number 18 tram

By Jerry Lawton/Published 8th August 2008

They say they are “utterly convinced” the missing girl is still alive.

Investigators are now following up a whole series of possible leads across Europe – including a sighting on a tram in Belgium.

Investigators hired by parents Kate and Gerry, both 40, have been boosted by a series of potential sightings of Madeleine, revealed for the first time in Portuguese police files.

They include the claim by Anna Stam, 41, that she spoke to a girl who called herself Maddie in her Amsterdam joke shop.

The girl was with a Portuguese couple, who told Anna they were in a circus in France.

Around the same time, another Dutch woman was convinced she had also seen Madeleine in the same city.

Just days later, on May 15 last year, a girl matching Madeleine’s description was spotted in Brussels. Line Compere, 31, told local police she saw a blonde-haired, blue-eyed child with a couple on a tram.

Last night, Line told the Daily Star: “I made the sighting on a tram. We were on the No18 tram. They got off and then got on to the No51 tram.

“She really looked like Madeleine, but her hair was different. In the photos I saw of Madeleine she had a fringe, but this girl did not.

“She was with a man and a woman, both between 35 and 40. They had dark hair and looked Eastern European. I told the Belgian police all the details.”

The report was passed on to Portuguese police, but it is unclear what action they took.

It was the first of four possible sightings in Belgium.

On May 27, a Brit contacted police after seeing a child asleep on a train from Brussels to Antwerp. She was with a balding white man, aged about 40.

On June 2, a girl who looked like Madeleine was spotted with a couple in a shop in the Belgian town of Mouscron. Gilles Crippiau, 33, saw the trio get into a grey Renault Scenic.

A month later, a child therapist was “100% sure” she saw Madeleine with a couple in the Belgian town of Tongeren.

Madeleine vanished from her parents’ holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, just days before her fourth birthday.

A source close to the inquiry said: “We have never stopped believing and hoping Madeleine may still be alive, but now the private detectives are utterly convinced.”

Quite a few by the looks of it.  It kept the funds flowing into the likes of Método 3 as long as they appeared to be making progress.  Can anyone think of a more immoral or contemptible scam than to give the parents of a missing child false hope?

Taxi driver 'drove Madeleine McCann, three men and a woman' the night after she disappeared

Driver's claims could provide vital clues in the case

A taxi driver who could help solve the mystery of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance has been ignored by Portuguese police, it was revealed today.

A lawyer for her parents told how the man, who says he saw the toddler a day after she vanished, is a crucial witness who could provide vital clues in the case.

Today, on the eve of the fifth anniversary into her disappearance, the cab driver told the Standard, how he has never been interviewed by detectives.

Antonio Castela says a young girl, who looked like Madeleine, got into the back of his taxi with four adults near the Spanish border in the Algarve, the night after she went missing.

Despite telling the Policia Judiciaria, the Portuguese police's investigative unit, what he saw, he has never been questioned.

The 72-year-old said he picked up three men, a woman and a child at 7:50pm on the May 4 2007, from Monte Gordo, about an hour's drive from Praia da Luz, where Madeleine vanished the night before.

He drove them two miles to the Hotel Apolo in Vila Real de Santo Antonio near Faro, where they got into a blue jeep and drove away.

He said: "The little girl, who looked like Madeleine was sat on the lap of a man sitting at the back of the cab. I remember thinking it was odd because they did not speak a word during the entire journey apart from at the end when the man sat in the passenger seat said to me; how much?"

Speaking from his home in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, he added: "Only when I heard about Madeleine going missing and seeing her picture on the TV did I contact the police as the little girl in the back of my taxi had that same distinct mark in her eye as Madeleine does."

Mr Castela, who has been a taxi driver for 23 years, said the girl, who was dressed in pink pyjamas, was awake, but did not speak and was just "staring ahead" as though she had been doped.

"After I went to the police, I never heard anything from them again" he said. "They did not seem to take me seriously and never questioned me. They simply took down the details and that was it. I am amazed that it has been five years and nobody has ever asked me what I saw that night. I am absolutely certain it was her."

Kate and Gerry McCann's lawyer in Portugal, Isabel Duarte, said Mr Castela's account is one of several important leads that the Portuguese police have failed to follow up.

Scotland Yard, which last year launched a £2million review of all known evidence in the case, says there are 195 new leads in the case adding they believe she is still alive.

A team of detectives, based in Oporto in northern Portugal, has been appointed to re-examine the case but so far say there are no credible new facts to justify re-opening the investigation.

Kate and Gerry McCann said today they have "no doubt" that the Portuguese authorities will eventually re-open the investigation into their daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

Police in Portugal said last week they had found "no new element" to justify re-launching their inquiry into how the little girl vanished on a family holiday to the Algarve in May 2007. But the McCanns, speaking on the eve of the fifth anniversary of Madeleine going missing, added their voice to calls from Scotland Yard for the case to be re-opened.

Mr McCann, 43, said: “I think the most important thing is that a lot of the investigation opportunities are in Portugal.

“I think it’s fairly clear that the case will have to be re-opened for those to be pursued adequately.

“We weren’t expecting a knee-jerk reaction by any means. This is an ongoing dialogue, and I am sure the investigation will get opened again in due course.

“I have no doubt about that. It will get re-opened.”

His wife, 44, added: “It’s certainly the best way that we’re going to find Madeleine, and who took her. If people want to find Madeleine, and want to find the person who took her, then we need the case to be re-opened.”

The officer leading Scotland Yard’s review of the original investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance spoke last week of his belief that the case can still be solved and said there is evidence she could still be alive.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said the Metropolitan Police would like the case to be re-opened, but stressed that the decision was one for Portugal.

Mr McCann said: “The only way everyone will be able to move on is for the case to be solved, and that is for Madeleine to be found and the perpetrators brought to justice. Until then it’s not going to go away. It can’t go away.”

HER EYES TOLD ME IT WAS HER SAYS HANNIE

SECOND SIGHTING OF TOT IN AMSTERDAM

A second possible sighting of Madeleine McCann in Amsterdam was revealed last night.

Pensioner Hannie Weichmann said she saw a little girl with an anxious woman near her home in the Dutch city days after Maddie vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal.

Hannie, 71, believed a crude attempt had been made to disguise the child by cutting and dyeing her hair, giving her a badly-trimmed fringe and some red locks. But she said: "Those eyes...I knew it was her."

Hannie spoke 24 hours after released police files revealed Amsterdam party shop worker Anna Stam spoke to an English girl who called herself Maddie.

She was with an odd couple and told 41-year-old Anna: "They took me from my holiday." She said of the woman with her: "She is not my mummy."

Hannie's sighting was in the centre of the canal city near Weteringsplantsoen at around the same time in May last year.

She said: "I saw a woman aged 30 to 35 continuously walking up and down the waterside. You could see by the way she handled the kid that she was not used to children. The woman had brown curly hair. She spoke English with the girl.

"Maddie wore a pink woollen coat that reached her calfs. I know because she reminded me of my own daughter when she was that young. Maddie was delighted by my dog diving into the water."

Favourite

The lost girl was in pink pyjamas when she was snatched in Praia da Luz just before her fourth birthday. And pink was her favourite colour.

Hannie said she called cops, who arrived to challenge the woman. The pensioner said: "She told the police she was a tourist and was babysitting the little girl. That was it. They didn't ask for any name - not mine nor hers."

Hannie claimed she saw the girl again the following week. She said: "She came to me to pat the dog. Then I let her go. It was stupid of me but I thought that since the police were so convinced it wasn't Maddie, it didn't matter."

Dutch police refused to comment on Hannie's story last night, referring all queries to Portuguese cops. But it WILL be followed up by private detectives acting for Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry.

They will also talk to Anna, who yesterday revealed a string of further clues that could boost the hunt for the child.

The Sun took Anna back to the shop where she saw the Maddie lookalike.

She told how the child was wearing a distinctive PINK top bearing the English wording "Little Beavers".

Anna said the child was never called by name by the couple with her.

They said they had a small circus in France and addressed her as La Petite - French for Little One.

The assistant added she had green eyes and an expressionless face identical to a picture of Maddie she saw after the girl's disappearance became news in Holland.

Anna reported her sighting to Dutch police, who passed the information to Portuguese detectives. But she never heard from them - and they never informed the McCanns of her story.

Anna said: "The Portuguese certainly could have done more, which I think everyone believes. Now I just want to do anything I can to help. I want to speak to British detectives and to Kate and Gerry McCann."

More details from the released Portuguese police files emerged yesterday.

They revealed Kate and Gerry slept in separate beds after having a row the night before Maddie vanished.

A file written by three inspectors said of Kate: "When asked if she ever slept in Madeleine's room, she said that happened on Wednesday because she had fallen out with Gerry after he ignored her after dinner when they went to the tapas bar.

"She decided to retaliate by sleeping in another room."

The files also show a table plan drawn by Kate, showing she was not sitting next to Gerry at dinner on the night Maddie went missing. She was between pals Rachel Oldfield and Fiona Payne, while Gerry was on the other side of Fiona.

Another document revealed expat Robert Murat was made a suspect because he showed an "unusual curiosity" in the case while acting as an interpreter.

Property developer Mr Murat, 34 - cleared last month of any involvement - was also said to have had "enormous knowledge" of the McCanns' holiday complex and their routine. The report added: "He also tried constantly to influence the direction of the investigation."

THE McCanns are planning a Crimewatch reconstruction on TV to revitalise the search for Maddie. They are in talks with the BBC to see if a re-enactment can be carried out including the swathes of new information emerging from the released files.

I saw Maddie in Malta

Jun 23, 2007 00:00
By North Wales Daily Post

THE possible sighting by a North Wales man of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann has triggered a huge police search on the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta.

Home from his holiday, heating engineer Ray Roberts of Llangefni was yesterday besieged by the media over his claims.

Mr Roberts, 49, had alerted British police to his suspicions that on Sunday he saw the girl in what looked like a wig with an “Arab-looking man” in a Maltese street.

He emailed Leicester police on Wednesday and his account was passed on to the Maltese authorities, triggering a huge police response on the island.

Yesterday, his wife Norma told the Daily Post he had “acted out of the kindness of his heart” in informing the police about the alleged sighting.

In an interview Mr Roberts said he thought he saw the girl with an “Arab-looking man” and a younger woman in the street at 11.30pm last Sunday.

The girl had tripped, and the man – who was holding on to her arm – had barked “get up, little girl!”

“It was obviously not his first language so it seemed odd that he had to speak to her in English,” said Mr Roberts.

“As a father, their reaction did not seem natural.”

He added: “Then I noticed the little girl’s hair.

“It was pitch black, very thick and cut in an unusual style for a child that age – very much like a wig rather than real hair.

“The more I think about what I saw the more convinced I become that it may well have been Maddie.

“The oddness of it all played out in my mind until I got home then I realised I had to do something.”

Last night, Maltese police revealed they were dealing with details of 11 separate possible sightings of the missing girl, dating back as far as May 27.

Two more witnesses came forward yesterday to report seeing Madeleine McCann in Malta – but police said their investigations had so far come to nothing.

The reports differ on where the young girl was seen and who was with her, with some witnesses saying she was with a man and others with a woman.

One Maltese man used his mobile phone to take a picture of a child he believed to be Madeleine at a parish feast in the central town of Zejtun on June 17.

Police analysed the photograph but it proved not to be the abducted British girl.

In a statement Maltese police said: “A full-scale investigation, involving different sections of the force co-ordinated by our serious crime investigations department is ongoing to confirm or otherwise the alleged sightings, which efforts have so far yielded a negative outcome.

“However, investigations are still actively in progress in order to shed more light upon the reported sightings.”

The Maltese authorities are keeping their foreign counterparts informed and have put officers stationed at ports on full alert to check people leaving the country.

The first sighting was reported to police on May 27 by a Maltese woman who said she believed she saw Madeleine with a man in the Maltese capital Valletta a week earlier.

On June 17 two female British tourists said they saw a girl fitting Madeleine’s description boarding a bus with a middle-aged woman at Floriana, near Valletta.

After this report a formal inquiry headed by a magistrate was launched.

Yesterday the Maltese newspaper In-Nazzjon (The Nation) reported these sightings, and seven further reports from Maltese citizens came in to police.

Members of the McCann family last night marked the 50th day she has been missing with a worldwide balloon release in Liverpool.

 Hello,

Last Friday 29th of June I contacted the Dutch Police in Eindhoven, ( because I didn't who(sic) ((?want or wish?)), to contact anyone else) after seeing the message on TV on Thursday night and Friday morning about the arrest of two people, an Italian man and a Portuguese woman, possibly related to the missing Madeleine McCann.

I did not hear from the Police since then. Maybe my tip doesn't lead to anything but I find it important to be sure that the message is reported to the right persons. That's why I am sending this e-mail.

 Page 819 (Page 3 of 5)

In the week from May 5th til May 19th we were in the Algarve (My husband, my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law and my(sic) ((?her??)), husband). The first week we stayed in Lagos and the second week in Santa Barbara de Nexe. We heard about the disappearing of Madeleine on Wednesday 9th May. There were pictures everywhere so you couldn't miss it.

In the second week when we stayed in Santa Barbara de Nexe we drove near the shore towards CARVOEIRO and were making a car trip. In the little town, Carvoeiro, we went to the beach for a very short time and when we decided to get something to drink I was waiting, in front of the beach, with my mother-in-law for my husband who was still on the beach. At that time, a couple, a man with dark hair and a woman with dark hair, came from the beach and they had a little girl with them who had blond hair.

The reason why it took my attention was because the girl was 3 - 4 years old (but I don't have any children and I don't know much about sizes etc at any age), had blond hair and the parents had dark hair. The man and woman were speaking English (not with an accent, at least not that I could hear) and said something to the girl and called her, at first, Maddy and then Madeleine because she didn't listen right away. But she didn't react strange.

When I was waiting I watched them walking towards the town and was doubting to do anything with this. I couldn't imagine if you have abducted a little child you would go to the beach only 60 km (or something like that) away and call her by her real name. Maybe if I had seen a Policeman at that time I might attented(sic) him but the situation to me was not likely.

 Page 820 (Page 4 of 5)

When I heard of the arrest of the man and woman this picture again occurred to me. The news didn't show any photo's of the people who were arrested (and I believe that the investigation did point out that they were after tipmoney(sic), (?ransome?), or something like that). If I would see the pictures I might be able to tell you if the people they have arrested are the same I saw on the beach that day (Monday 14th May). It probably is nothing but you never know.

Well if this information is of any help then you can contact me by e-mail or phone.

Kind regards, I hope you will find her soon.

Take an educated guess.

Can't imagine. I'm spot on topic with comment about dubious sightings.

They certainly kept on coming. I wonder how much these people were paid for their efforts  ?   ?{)(**

Why would people be paid to report bogus sightings.   I just don't get it.

I've heard this allegation before that people are paid to supply false sightings.  How were these people from various places all over the planet recruited?  Did someone advertise for folk who would be willing to lie to the police for a price?   How were they paid?   Was it a one off payment or are they on a salary?

And who would be stupid enough to put themselves in the hands of scores of people who could then blackmail them at any time.       It's not as if they could rely on their 'honour' not to spill the beans - as it goes without saying that someone willing to take money to lie to the police has none.

I've heard some daft conspiracy theories in my time, but the one which claims people are paid to support the McCanns or to falsely claim sightings is up there with the 'Substitute Child' theory IMO - where it is claimed that Madeleine died way before the 3rd May and a substitute child was brought in (I can only assume from Clones R Us) to fool people into thinking she was still alive up until the 3rd.     And to think there are people who actually believe that.

The McCann case received world wide attention.  Of course there would be hundreds if not thousands of sightings.  These sightings would vary from coming from really genuine people  - right across the spectrum to those coming from total fruitloops imo.

Well,  I don't know that it's such a far-fetched idea

We must remember that the McCanns employed  private detectives who were crooks  ...   so nothing is  entirely beyond the realms of possibility

Do you  think they deliberately employed them?   How could they know what was going to happen in the future with any company they employed?

We can all be wise after the event.

Well said Benice !!

I don't know how many times I heard poster's saying the McCann's had arranged these sightings.   It is ludicrous.     As you say,  they would have a lot of faith in these people not to spill the beans,   how tempting it would be for them to sell their story 'I was paid to fake a sighting'    journalists would pay good money for that scoop wouldn't they.

Oh right.   I obviously misunderstood your post.   Sorry for that.       Can I take it that you don't believe the conspiracy theory that the McCanns pay members of the public to support them and to also come up with false sightings?    It's a theory which pops up at regular intervals on the internet.

Kennedy sent two Metodo 3 investigators to Morocco. There were reports that Moroccans were offered money if they would claim to have seen a child looking like Madeleine. During the Leveson enquiry, Daily Express journalist David Pilditch admitted the Express had indeed paid one such person 500 euros.

Shortly after being summoned by the McCanns to give evidence at the McCanns’ libel action against Goncalo Amaral (which was later postponed), lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia fled to Brazil,  saying he would never return to Portugal.  Within a few weeks of his move to Brazil, the media reported another sighting of Madeleine McCann in Brazil. Once again this turned out to be false.

The Arade Dam fiasco which Correia set up in conjunction with Método 3 was yet another scam intended merely to attract publicity to the case.

It's much more likely that these sightings are brought to the attention of newspapers by people who are either looking for a quick buck or 15 minutes of fame.

Not to say that all the reported sightings were fabricated, I'm sure that at least some were people just trying to help. I assume that most of the latter went straight to the police though.

I don't personally believe that the Mccanns or people working for them had a hand in it.

Personally, I believe that there were various reasons.

- People who genuinely believed that they'd seen her.
- People who had visions or whatever.
- A few people who had contacted the media and were paid for their stories.

Not all would be mutually exclusive, but the media machine involved big bucks and they simply had to file copy, whether anything was verifiable or not.

A fascinating documentary on the media by Al Jazeera (IMO)

Brit’s new Madeleine McCann claim: 'I'm 100% certain I saw her'

A BRITISH woman claims she saw Madeleine McCann with a man who looked “like a gypsy”.

By Ross Kaniuk/Published 23rd February 2012

Yvonne Tunnicliffe said she was certain the girl was the missing youngster as she was the spitting image of Maddie’s dad Gerry.

Yvonne, 63, saw the girl at a supermarket in Alhaurin el Grande in Spain and contacted police a week later.

But when they took the ex-sales assistant to examine CCTV tapes from the shop, the manager said footage was routinely deleted after seven days.

The sighting was in 2009, but Yvonne has come forward again to expat news site The Olive Press after she read other claims Maddie could have been snatched by a gypsy gang.

Yvonne said: “My whole body shook when I saw her. She looked just like her daddy.

“The girl’s demeanour bothered me. I don’t think she belonged to the man because she didn’t look anything like him.”

Madeleine vanished just before her fourth birthday in 2007 while on holiday with her parents in Portugal’s Praia da Luz, 220 miles west of Alhaurin el Grande.

A spokesman for the McCanns said: “Any verifiable information will go to police and private investigators and they will act where appropriate.”

In my opinion a main driving force of the Drs McCann determined search might be that they have identified Madeleine from one of the photographs or CCTV images we have been discussing.

Indeed, what they have seen may not be in the public domain.

We do not know how many alleged sightings were in the PJ files handed over to the McCann lawyers in 2010.
But we do know that there was huge distress that they had not been investigated because they were considered to be irrelevant.
