You cannot really rely on witness statements to a word..
Tonight I was chatting with sadie about the case of Antonia Bilic, Croatian case similar to Madeleine, wiith regards to the amount of the police work and media attention. Their search lasted for 40 days, they even dried a lake in attempt to finding her.
The only witness in Antonia's case said she entered a blue lorry. Police was was looking for a blue lorry for days and day.. the lorry was actually white and grey.. They found the lorry, they found her killer but not the body all until many months later.. Antonias sister was writing on uk forums during this time and informing everyone what was going on.. she was constantly fighting with the police..
So, that is proof that you cannot really rely on witness statements..
Antonias case was solved by using technology.
And they are also a tourist country, they care what the tourists are going to say, this was in the middle of the tourist season.. and they still carried these enormouis searches..

Croation case similar to Madeleine ?
This was a desperately unfortunate 17 year old who got into a truck with a rapist/murderer ... who confessed to killing her but then claimed he had been forced by the police to admit the crime
He was sentenced to 40 years for her murder
( I gathered this from a quick google check ... is it correct ? )
In what way is this even remotely relevent to Madeleine McCann ?

In your anecdote the eyewitness WAS reliable.
He or she said she got into a lorry.
She did.
The detail (colour) was wrong, but the Eyewitness account WAS accurate.

I said it was similar with regards to media attention and amount of the police work..The family contacted the media..
The eye witness said the lorry was blue. The police spent days searching through the CCTVs, looking for a blue lorry..
He was finally caught thanks to mobile phone pings.
This is why the mobile phone pings are very important..

Thanks for googling this, Icabdocrane, though it has become a urban legend that any missing child case, whatever the age, the sex and the country and whatever from bed or not, is possibly related to the McCann one.

I thought it was actually true. Do you mean it is not? >@@(*&)

I said it was similar with regards the amount of the police work and the media attention.
And I was right.

As Vixte said: It was similar in the main. It was an abduction
... and despite shock horror from a vocal group on here, SY and most people believe that Madeleine was abducted.
I remember spending long hours going over the case with Antonias sister, or friend, not sure which now. It was thoroughly discussed and analysed on PFA2. The family, one sister especially, pushed the Police who were very half soaked about the search. She pushed and she pushed and she pushed. 8@??)( She sought publicity and at one time made herself thoroughly disliked for it, BUT the people of Croatia saw and admired her stance, they noticed how laid back the Police had been ... and they helped push the Police.
.............. then things started happening.
As Vixte says, it was the phone records and pings from both Antonias phone and the abductors phone at similar places and times that eventually caught him out.
All strength to your elbow S.Y.
Present lines of enquiry sound promising 8((()*/

I remember that. The sister said that the mother had problems reporting her missing. The police was old-fashioned, did not believe she was abducted. They never recorded the statement when the mother went to the police for the first time.
