A British couple whose baby girl was seized by police during a holiday in Portugal have furiously denied being too drunk to look after her.
James Moreland and Lee-Ann O’Donoghue said they had been handcuffed by police with guns, who told them their heavy-handed response was because of the ‘Madeleine McCann effect’.
The couple’s 14-month-old daughter, who we have been asked not to name, was taken into emergency care on Sunday after reports they had drunkenly thrown her into a pool and staggered around with her on an eighth-floor hotel balcony.
Miss O’Donoghue and Mr Moreland, on their first family holiday together since the baby’s birth, said they were at a loss as to why their daughter was placed in a hospital, and branded reports of their antics as ‘ludicrous, downright lies’.
They also claim Mr Moreland, 29, was beaten by police and £500 – all of their holiday spending money – was stolen during the assault.
Miss O’Donoghue, 34, who is on maternity leave from her job as a hospital personal assistant, said: ‘We are so scared and shaken up.
‘The police told us they had acted like they did, that they had been heavy-handed, because of the Madeleine McCann effect. They said the case had been very bad for them and that they had to be very careful when it came to the welfare of British children on holiday.’
The family were staying at the Hotel Paraiso in Albufeira – 40 miles from Praia da Luz where Madeleine vanished in 2007 – as part of a week-long Thomas Cook package trip.
Their story first emerged in the Portuguese press, which quoted unnamed hotel guests as saying that while sat by the pool, they had seen Miss O’Donoghue on the balcony behaving dangerously.
The reports also said the daughter had bruised legs after her mother dropped her and that a drunken Mr Moreland hurled her into the pool in front of horrified holidaymakers.
But both parents vehemently deny any of this took place – especially as their room, which they showed to the Mail, does not overlook the hotel pool but a car park, from where Miss O’Donoghue could not possibly have been seen.
Looking drained, she said: ‘You can see from my daughter’s legs there are no bruises. I did not drop her, I have never dropped her and I was not drunk.
‘She is my first and only baby and I adore her. I am such a protective mother. I just can’t believe the lies I am hearing.’ Mr Moreland, who is covered in bruises he says were inflicted by the police, said: ‘To say I threw my daughter in the pool is just ridiculous.’
Their ordeal began on Sunday afternoon when they joined friends at a bar in Albufeira. Miss O’Donoghue said: ‘I had three cocktails and was merry, not drunk by any stretch.’ At 8pm, after they returned to the hotel, police knocked on the door.
‘They said they wanted to check on the baby,’ said Miss O’Donoghue. ‘My daughter was crying because she is teething so I gave her some Calpol (a brand of paracetamol for children).
‘The police saw the bottle and said that it was an “illegal drug in Portugal” and they were taking her to hospital for tests to see if we had sedated her. They were very brusque and had guns.’

Miss O’Donoghue was allowed to go to the hospital too. But when medics ‘started sticking needles’ in her baby for drug tests, she protested and was handcuffed. Soon afterwards, Mr Moreland arrived at the hospital but was refused entry.
He claimed: ‘I did get angry and started to shout and swear as I wanted to see my baby. A group of about seven policemen started hitting me, they put me in handcuffs and threw me on the floor in the back of a police car.
‘They yanked my arms up behind me until I screamed. They checked my wallet for ID and when I got home I saw that all of our spending money had gone.’
The couple, from Belfast, were not arrested but the case was referred to the local equivalent of social services.
They were finally given their baby back on Tuesday.
A Portuguese police spokesman said: ‘We were called to the hotel because of reports of a drunk and disorderly disturbance.’

Indeed, it doesn't say wether they had left the kid indoors or taken it out on the piss with them.
I reckon either is possible [ moderated ]

Since when has teething been considered an illness? It was the police who went to the room to check on the baby - not the parents. They were in there with her when the police arrived. How could they have 'hurled her into the pool' if she had been left in the room?
-
The baby wasn't sick, she wasn't left alone, and Calpol isn't a drug.
-
well she was teething

The Portuguese Police wanted to check on the baby. The child's mother was clearly in the room with the child.
-
Perhaps the FO should issue a travel warning not to take paracetamol on holiday to Portugal...

Probably within the bounds of responsible parenting though.......

Dreadful behaviour by the police. And people wonder why the UK government was so quick to come to the aid of the McCanns - because the british diplomats out there know exactly what the local police force is like, that's why. I dread to think what would have happens to Kate and Gerry if they hadn't got that help.

I think it's important to read carefully the meaning of the pronoun "they".
The meaning is IMO "They (the police), after the family of 3 had returned home, wanted to check on the baby"
And BTW notice the couple were in the bar in the afternoon (not late at night) and I would assume that they had their toddler with them at the bar, which is perfectly acceptable in Portugal.
Nowhere in the article are the parents accused of leaving their toddler home alone.
-
So the police told this couple that because of the Madeleine McCann case they now had to be careful where the welfare of British children were concerned
Then these police, who were being 'careful' not to have a repeat of the McCann debacle, proceed to beat the British father up and steal his money
What a crock
-
...Calpol isn't a drug.
No way is paracetamol a sedative or anything like that.
-
See there is now an update on this case. The couple are now blaming everything on the Portugese Police lol, even though at the time they admitted they had been a bit irresponsible.

This couple were drunk in charge of this child, they were seen by GUESTS of the hotel, and the mother was unsteady on the BALACONEY holding her child etc.
Now they are saints and crying they were brutalised blah blah blah.
They were drunk in charge of a child. The thing with Calpol is if you drunk you can give the child too much.
It is always the same, BLAME SOMEONE ELSE.
She would not have been blaming anyone if she had dropped that child over the balconey these things happen and a lot of accidents do happen to children whilst people are on holiday, a 5 year old suddenly drowned in cyprus pool yesterday.
.....
A five-year-old British girl has drowned in a swimming pool in Cyprus while on a family holiday.
The girl, from County Durham, was spotted at the bottom of a pool at the Evalena Hotel in Protaras, on the island's south-east coast, on Monday.
Cypriot officers are looking at CCTV footage to find out what happened.
Famagusta Police said another holidaymaker saw her, dived in and took her out "but it was already too late".
"It seems that the parents had not seen the child," a spokesman said.
"She was in the bottom of the pool for around five minutes."
A post-mortem examination carried out at Larnaca General Hospital confirmed the cause of death was drowning.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said it was aware a British national had died in Cyprus on Monday and was "providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time".
It is understood the accident happened on the day the girl and her family arrived for a week's holiday.
...........................................................
5 minutes thats a long time, where were the parents? The Cypriot police will not mess about if there is any chance the child was neglected. Lets hope not for the parents sake.

Having read the Belfast Telegraph face book page regarding this incident I was struck by the number of posters who expressed disquiet about holidaying in Portugal. Some saying they would never return and others saying that now they definitely would never visit.
It was discussed on our forum that Portugal is a holiday venue of choice for the Irish.
IMO the publicity given to the couple’s version of events has severely damaged the tourist industry in Portugal.
I was appalled in particular at the treatment meted out to the child. She was forcibly separated from her mother. Invasive procedures were carried out on her without parental consent.
That 'drugging' their child with Calpol seems to have been the motivating factor in this verifies without doubt the effect Dr Amaral's book has had on the psyche of the Portuguese.
-
IMO, this is a cock and bull story made up by the parents to look like victims.
-

The parents said the police accused them of throwing their daughter from their apartment into the pool. The parents say if they had done that she would have been dead, also their apartment wasn't near the pool. This could easily be checked out.
The police took their daughter to hospital to check if she had been drugged, taking a blood test from her. The test proved to be negative. This again could easily be checked out.
Why would the parents make this up?
I hope they have complained and it is thoroughly investigated.
-
A waste of time. It won't be investigated.
The Algarve is a holiday venue of choice with The Irish. This was a very bad mistake for The GNR to have made. The Algarve will be a wasteland before much longer.

It is no joke to remove a child from the custody of her parents, who witnessed her mum being pushed in the face in the process (assaulted), then to keep her isolated from her parents until the result of blood tests were known.
To traumatise a child in this way is abuse and smacks of a police state.
It verges on the criminal.
The belief which seems prevalent in Portugal that Calpol is the drug of choice for Brits to incapacitate their children while they incapacitate themselves with alcohol is more than insulting.

They were drunk get over it. My god do you live in a bubble?
I have lived abroad most of my life and been on holiday many a time, and seen the state people get into when they go on holiday, their whole aim seems to be to get drunk, sunburnt and go home and say what a wonderful time they had.
these people were DRUNK. Simple.
The mother was not assaulted her words now this never happened then. She is twisting the facts.
As to Calpol well yes too many people do use it, and to use it when your drunk is even more irresponsible as it would be quite easy to to give too much of the stuff.

what makes me mad about your post is if they were acting like that on holiday in Cornwall in a Hotel they would have been ARRESTED by the british police.
People like you are a sorry excuse for parents if you agree with any of this.
Even without the Maddy case these people behaved badly and irresponsibly.

In an hotel in Cornwall they would not have been reported to the police for giving their child Calpol.
After the disgraceful scapegoating of this couple many more Irish may think Cornwall a more inviting holiday destination than Portugal.

I doubt they would find many cheap package holidays offered in Cornwall.

"Dreadful behaviour by the police"
You can bet. Any other police in the world would have put those parents in prison and taken that little child into Social Services Protection.
Unfortunately there's an agreement with UK in the sense that those kind of parents be sent back home and followed by British Social Services.
I'm appalled that anyone in here condones such parental behaviour & apparently would prefer that the police didn't respond to the alarm/solicitations of guests and Hotel management.
Shame on you!

This drunken pair were not "reported to the police for giving their child calpol."
They were reported to the police by horrified holiday-makers who feared for the safety of the child
Do you think the police should have ignored those reports and just left the child at risk ?
Do you defend the right of all parents to behave recklessly and irresponsibly where their children's safety is concerned ? .... or is just the rights of British parents on holiday in Portugal who's right to treat their children's well-being in a cavalier and dangerous way that you uphold ?
-
IMO, this is a cock and bull story made up by the parents to look like victims.
So if we forget everything else why you are not condemning the police stealing the money from the father?

Sorry but you are so blinkered to the word DRUNK and the words MCCANN your not even worthy of discussing this with.
They were D.R.U.N.K do you understand that? Drunk in charge of a child and oh yeh a bottle of Calpol.
Sorry but your now on my ignore list i cant be bothered to discuss these things with stupid people, life is far to short.
Anyway they will get their just deserts, perhaps if people who were actually at the hotel, and saw them drunk they make take umbrage to this article and tell the truth.
I hope one or two of them sees it.

I don't doubt that, though it was Cornwall that was mentioned.
Holidaying in the UK does tend to be expensive compared with the average and popular overseas package.
-
Well it appears there is more to the story then they let on, apparently from what has now been said in portugal newspapers the women involved had to get help with her partner who was being bolshi and drunk and out of hand.
There is always more to these stories.

Not the dreaded Portuguese? Well they are notoriously unreliable. Along with the English and Spanish they invented visiting far away places and blasting the native wildlife ... 8(0(*

Well my sister is on holiday abroad, and sent me a photo of a magazine stating Kate Middleton pregnant with twins lol do you think these newspapers/magazines all just make it up lol. .

There is nothing new under the sun. Just how big a problem is it in Portugal that mothers sell their children? Seems to be the first thing that springs to mind in PJ investigations into missing children.
Not even in a process of elimination but as a definite line of inquiry, the PJ suspected the Drs McCann of selling Madeleine. Explains the anxiety to have access to their bank accounts.
- SNIP - Claims emerged last night that Portuguese police had initially considered whether the couple could have sold their daughter to paedophiles.
Detectives reportedly believed the couple might have sold Madeleine to a criminal network to ease money worries,
According to sources, they spent "several days" investigating but the wild theory fell apart when they realised the couple were wealthy.
A police source told the Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas: "The police team in charge of the case investigated the possibility that the child had been sold by her own parents because of financial difficulties."

Sorry, but the PJ was not involved in this case. Only the GNR was contacted and as no criminal investigation was deemed necessary, the PJ were not called.
The GNR were called as other holiday makers were concerned about the behaviour of the couple and the welfare of the baby. It was not as if the police appeared out of nowhere because they thought the parents were giving the baby Capol.

the hospital staff say the child is fine (and was always fine) ...
this is the giveaway that the whole case was 'fabricated'.
Our Irish cousins with young children here - Eire and the North - need to be aware that the recent Ellie Gannon outcome in being returned to her mum in Ireland after 6 years unnecessary stress ...... made Portugal look very silly.
As an image of a country - Public Prosecutors and lawyers conniving to frustrate a criminal enquiry to find the child kidnapped by her Portuguese dad. Fully aware exactly where the child was !!! Also the Portuguese judges repeatedly deciding against the foreign Irish mother.
Was the earlier Carcavelos case also fabricated ?
In fabricating this nonsense - are the Portuguese 'authorities' up to EU standards of morality yet ? This sort of event does not make the EU look good.

Where does it say this person has first hand knowledge of what had transpired in the hotel? Just another opinionated person of the type we have become so familiar with and who polluted the FB page of the Belfast Telegraph to the disgust of many.
It is to be sincerely hoped that the couple who were severely traumatised by their experience will take legal advice on the matter and do something about it ... should be an easy enough matter to check out the witness statements alleging they were trying to throw their daughter into the swimming pool from an eighth floor balcony, ... I expect the hotel will have confirming CCTV of them rolling about drunk as well ...

I predict CCTV evidence is suddenly going to go missing.. 8)--)) and suddenly a next door to the hotel witness, who has several apartments for rent is going to pop up with a statement that they saw the mother throwing the baby from the window..
It is soooooo predictable..

Well whatever it was it was serious enough that they should be monitored by Social Services (refer to the link in Brietta's post; edited ;sorry it was Buzz's post) when they returned home.
Last time I looked Belfast was in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland so it would have been the British consul involved unless the folks hold Republic of Ireland passports.
Then would any one on this board really give a rats arse were it anywhere other than Portugal?
I've seen Brits abroad so have no illusions, but there certainly does seem to be a particular problem with incidents of this type in Portugal.
Social services in Belfast were involved at the behest of the Portuguese authorities, and have declared themselves perfectly satisfied that the child was not at risk, as were their counterparts in Portugal.
That the catalyst for what happened to this couple was Calpol is proven by the invasive procedures on their child to discover if she had been sedated. The tests of course were negative.

There are alleged witnesses to mum swaying about on the balcony with the child in her arms (probably sizing up the trajectory of the throw). Sooo glad she decided not to. Their room was located at the rear of the hotel, eight floors up and below them was a carpark.
It was reported in the papers ... must be true.

Was this also something you read in the papers?

I don't think there is much doubt that the child was subjected to a drugs test.
