The Missing will invite comparisons to the Madeleine McCann case but has a wider agenda
Oct 28, 2014 07:00 By Jane Simon
James Nesbitt stars in a new drama about a desperate dad searching for his son who vanished during a family holiday in France eight years earlier.
This fictional story of a small child who disappears during a family holiday in Europe is bound to invite comparisons to the case of Madeleine McCann.
But this drama, which stars James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor as the distraught parents of five-year-old Oliver, seems to have a wider agenda planned for us than simply dressing up in other people’s grief. (It’s original title was actually Breakdown).
Eight years after his son disappeared, dad Tony returns to the ironically named Hotel L’Eden in northern France where they were staying when Oliver disappeared during the World Cup.
He’s following up what he hopes will be a strong new lead but meets resistance from the locals as well as the former detective (Tcheky Karyo) who was in charge of their investigation.
Flitting between past and present, there are heavy hints here of dark secrets in both the family’s life and within the police force that we can expect to be shaken out in the weeks to come.
Describing every parents’ worst nightmare is a massive open goal and writers Harry and Jack Williams have little troubling slamming this first instalment squarely into the back of the net.
Even so there’s one incredibly unlikely development that should never have got past the linesman. The Missing, BBC1, 9pm

What a coincidence! Sounds like a winner for the beeb and might even reveal a whole new insight into the idea of searching. Could there be a sting in the tail for this misadventure?

James Nesbitt on turning a real life tragedy into drama in The Missing
By Craig McLean Tuesday 28 October 2014
James Nesbitt does good grief. Watch his latest drama series and you see it etched hard into his face, sunk deep through his eyes. In The Missing he plays Tony, a man for whom the pain of losing his young son eight years previously has consumed him and robbed him of his life. TV drama veteran that he is – stretching back to ITV’s Cold Feet in the 1990s and through to the likes of the BBC’s Murphy’s Law and Jekyll, as well as ITV’s Monroe – Nesbitt portrays grief rather well.
In the BBC’s latest eight-parter, he plays Tony, a father who can’t give up hope that Olly, his five-year-old son who vanished on a family holiday in France, is still alive somehow, somewhere. So Tony is dragged back over the Channel to chase up a lead – and, it seems, scare up some ghosts, no matter whom he upsets. He’s angry and desperate, a man adrift and trapped in a lonely existence, with a booze habit, unkempt hair and dressed in charity-shop chic.
But it’s a lean, smart chap who sits down for brunch with me in a London private members’ club to discuss his latest role. Nesbitt says that a lot of thought went into Tony’s character and appearance in 2014 and how that contrasted with the scenes set in 2006.
In 2006, Tony was a buzzy, busy professional with a loving wife (Frances O’Connor); fast-forward to 2014 and he’s a divorcé, ragged both internally and externally. The couple’s marriage was, it transpires, sunk by both Olly’s disappearance and the rumours surrounding it.
In terms of The Missing’s plot, “a lot of people have mentioned the Madeleine McCann case,” admits Nesbitt. On the evidence of the first two episodes, the parallels are striking: British couple suffer inexplicable loss of a child while on European holiday... Media firestorm engulfs family... From more scurrilous quarters the finger of suspicion is pointed at the parents... The Missing’s storyline even encompasses the publication of a book purporting to contain the “truth” about the disappearance, which is one of the more unsavoury developments that Kate and Gerry McCann had to deal with.
“But it’s much more of a thriller than that,” says Nesbitt. “That’s not to say there aren’t thriller elements in any child abduction. But it’s the notion of dropping a pebble in water and the ripples... the ramifications are huge.
“It’s not just about the father and mother and immediate family. It’s about other people’s lives being affected over a course of time. That brings the thriller element.”
Nesbitt, 49, admits it was a gruelling shoot: emotionally demanding scenes day in, day out day; 20 weeks from January to June this year. And all that in a production set in France, but based in Brussels. Harrowing stuff for anyone, more so for Nesbitt, a father separated from his own children and, it was revealed last October, from Sonia, his wife of 19 years.
“I tried to live as isolated a life as I could. What was helpful was that I didn’t live in a hotel in Brussels, I lived in an apartment. And I got the art department to send me all the things Tony would have had had access to, all the newspaper clippings and files. So I was surrounded by all that stuff in my flat.
“And I tried not to be social with the crew or cast. I would go out and eat by myself, and I would have these files with me. And I pounded the streets like Tony did, went into bars to have a couple of drinks. So, very much his world – because Tony was totally alone.
“I wouldn’t say it was Method acting,” he grins, “but that was an easier way of locating Tony’s pain – the determination, the guts, the anger and frustration at the police procedure.”
Didn’t those heavy days and lonely nights ever get a bit, well, much to cope with? “What would occasionally get to me was the sense of isolation, the sense of being on your own. Being away from my kids, that was not easy. But the strengths of it were almost the negatives of it. It was very helpful for the piece. But certainly at times it was, ah, difficult.”
Enforced isolation and domestic separation are, of course, the actor’s lot. And Nesbitt has endured more than his fair share of late. To play the dwarf Bofur in The Hobbit trilogy, the south London-based actor spent two years in total on the other side of the world. He thinks he undertook the “brutal” journey to New Zealand about 12 times, “Although to be fair, we were turning left on the aeroplane!”
His family – he has two daughters, Mary, now 12, and Peggy, 17, – accompanied him Down Under for the bulk of the filming. Peggy even helped her dad write a drinking song for his character Bofur although, in a development that would become emblematic of Nesbitt’s time on The Hobbit, his musical performance didn’t make the version of the film screened in cinemas, only “the extended DVD version”.
He admits that he was far from a fantasy fan beforehand; he hadn’t even seen director Peter Jackson’s previous Tolkien trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Now, of course, having been inducted into the thespian fellowship of the Ring, he understands the global reach of Middle Earth.
“It’s incredible just the response you get,” he marvels. “That amount of mail you get from all over the world. You forget just how much it means to people.”
But in the first instance, he concedes, it was about taking a punt on what seemed a huge opportunity: a role in a mega-budget, multi-part, block- buster franchise. “Absolutely it’s a leap of faith. You have to think: listen, it is a job. And it’s gonna be a job that lasts forever. But it’s an experience to take your girls to the other side of the world, where they’ll be imbued with a slightly different culture, which will live with them for the rest of their lives. It’s a whole new package. When you look at it that way, it’s the most sensational thing to do.”
But still. For a busy actor whose currency is, in part, his TV “presence”, it was an awful long time, if not off the map then certainly on the edge of it. And for what? As one of a baker’s dozen of dwarves in Peter Jackson’s sprawling cinematic trilogy, Nesbitt was part of an ensemble within an ensemble.
“It was extraordinary,” he reflects. “The experience of entering Tolkien’s 3D-enhanced world was incredible, and there will only ever be 13 dwarves in The Hobbit – and I was one of them. If I had my time again, would I do it? Yeah, I would.
“But – and I don’t think they would mind me saying this – at times it was frustrating. Just in terms of the acting, in terms of what you were given the opportunity to do.”
Coincidentally, Ken Stott, who is also in The Missing, was another of the dwarves, “And I think Ken would have found that at times frustrating as well. So, yes, we often looked at each other during The Missing and went, ‘it’s bit different, eh?’” he recounts with a wry chuckle.
Yet there were other, more personal challenges, too. “We filmed a lot of the end just after I’d lost my mum. She died in summer 2012 when I was in New Zealand. So I flew home for the funeral, then went back to film the end.
“And people who’ve read the book will know that it’s not all a happy ending for everyone. So that was quite interesting, coming back and doing scenes that involved the aftermath of people close to you dying.”
Having interviewed Nesbitt before, and enjoyed his company, as well as the impressive range of his onscreen work – movie-wise, it ranges from Paul Greengrass’s political drama Bloody Sunday in 2002 at one extreme to Danny Boyle’s charming comedy-drama Millions (2004) at the other – I tell him I was frustrated he didn’t appear more in the two Hobbit films released so far.
“No, I know,” he shrugs. “I thought I was gonna be. But that was one of the difficulties – there wasn’t a script per se before we agreed to it. But then there are an awful lot of people to keep happy. But in Three,” he adds, referring to December’s final chapter, which is sub-titled The Battle of the Five Armies, “I think there’s a lot more for everyone to do. And my kids are in it – they play Bard the Bowman’s daughters. They’ve got nice parts.”
Have they got more screen time than dad? “Not far off it, actually,” he smiles ruefully. Still, “after you do something like The Hobbit for such a long time, and you’re away for a long time, you can’t help but think: ‘Oh God, it’s gonna be really hard to reconnect when I get home, and maybe my time has passed...’ So when I came back I was just looking for something that was meaty.”
Nesbitt needn’t have worried. He secured The Missing, and landed a leading part in Channel 4’s Babylon, too. After premiering with a feature-length, Danny Boyle-directed pilot earlier this year, the Metropolitan Police-set show from the creators of the comedy series Peep Show Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong is back on C4 this month for a six-episode run. Nesbitt is once again Commissioner Richard Miller, the ramrod-straight man at the heart of policing London.
Does he understand the position of critics and viewers who found Babylon a strange hybrid. Is it drama or comedy? “Dramedy”, or um, “coma”?
“It’s very tough. Babylon’s a very odd tone,” he agrees, before suggesting that once viewers reach the third instalment, they’ll have a firmer, more enjoyable grasp of the comedy-drama’s quirky charms (having seen that third instalment, I agree with him).
And for all that, Nesbitt loved shooting the series, even when it overlapped with filming The Missing. Playing a poker-faced top cop with brisk aplomb was one aspect of the show’s appeal. The other was Commissioner Miller’s Northern Irish heritage.
“It’s probably that old thing that still lies mostly dormant in me,” he begins. “In the same way that Adam in Cold Feet was Northern Irish and [me] insisting on that, I love the idea that the most important policeman in the country is actually from Northern Ireland.
And he is the king. “There’s definitely a wee bit of my own personal Northern Irish defensiveness in there.”
The Missing is on BBC1 tonight at 9:00pm

LOL.
It has nothing to do with the McCann case. Mind you child goes missing in France and 8 hours later we find out who done it. Its fiction, and a thriller. To keep people watching it must have more plot then just child missing or snatched by pedophile.
I expect there will be links to secret agents, or spies, revenge, etc tangled in the plot...oh yeh well anything can go as its FICTION, lol.

The Missing review – hauntingly brilliant television
This eight-part thriller is not mawkish, or overly sentimental; just very human, and very very sad. James Nesbitt is so very very good at pain; he doesn’t just share it, he forces it on you

“Ours are never going swimming again,” says my missus. “Or to watch football, or to France, or out of the house. Or my sight.” Oh, dear. Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to watch The Missing (BBC1). But it is testament to the power of brothers Harry and Jack Williams’s drama, about the disappearance of five-year-old Oliver from a family holiday in France.
It’s hard not to think about the McCanns. And then - guiltily - about other children who have gone missing less publicly. Mostly though, certainly for anyone with children, it’s hard - impossible - not to imagine it happening to you.
There are several unbearable moments in The Missing. A sighting of Oliver that turns out not to be him but another little boy. His mother Emily (Frances O’Connor) waking up from the anaesthesia of sleep, and it suddenly hitting, the realisation that it wasn’t just a terrible dream, that her only son has gone.
The one that got me, though, is that first moment when it sinks in. Olly and dad Tony (James Nesbitt) have had their swim and have gone to the bar to get a drink, a bar that is full of people watching France playing Brazil in the World Cup final (the real event, Ronaldo on the screen, which adds an element of authenticity). Suddenly Oliver’s not there, and Tony’s running around, everywhere, directionless, shouting his name. And there’s that feeling, a quicker heartbeat, nausea, sickness and a tightening in the pit of the stomach, that every parent has felt when they’ve lost a child. For most of us, it’s only a few moments, before the little b....r turns up in the biscuits aisle or wherever. Not for the Hughes family, though. Tony’s cries of “Olly” become more and more desperate, and lost among the jubilation of a nation celebrating great sporting triumph.
Then there’s another noise, a crescendo-ing electronic high-pitched discordant screech, taking over the soundtrack and drowning out Tony and the jubilant street. What is it? It’s the noise inside Tony’s head, the sound of a father’s realisation he has lost his son, the sound of the greatest pain. (And Nesbitt is so very very good at pain; he doesn’t just share it, he forces it on you.)
The Missing is not mawkish, or overly sentimental; it’s just very human, and very very sad. It’s also a thriller, about a hunt and an investigation, by the police initially, then by a father, with the help of a retired French detective. The press (British, of course) are also involved, though it’s not yet clear how. I imagine in a thoroughly disreputable way.
The thriller side of things is excellent, too, and provides the momentum to carry it through eight episodes. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle, with only the left edge complete (Olly’s disappearance in 1998, time goes from left to right). And quite a lot of the right side has been done, though not one very important bit (but perhaps, as with so many real cases of disappearances, that part will never be completed, those pieces too are missing). In the middle are a lot of big spaces – not just to do with Olly and the investigation, but also with relationship breakdowns, and new relationships, and smears., and all the rest of the crap that accompanies something like this.
Most importantly, that noise, and the sickening feeling that accompanies it, never goes away. Even when it’s not actually there, on the soundtrack, it’s in your head. And however intriguing The Missing is as a thriller, it never lets you forget that at its heart is the story of loss and pain. Hauntingly brilliant television.
They are few and far between, but of course there are leads.
We dont know what they are, but without anything the case would have been closed months and months ago.

It was a good drama and while there are obvious cues from the McCann case, some of the basics are very different. It is fiction so it doesn't really matter which way it turns out.

I expect that they drew on several cases to write the narrative. The circumstances of any family facing and trying to deal with the fact that their child is missing will be different to those of another, as will the consequences and the outcome, but there are no doubt elements common to all of them.
The panic, anguish, different ways in which parents react and try to cope, guilt, false hopes and the general chaos seem to be common elements so far of what any family would go through in that kind of situation.

Without doubt the writer of this drama has based it loosely on the Maddie case. A cuddle fox instead of a cuddlecat was classic. The foreign holiday, the sudden disappearance, the immediate desperate search followed by the alienation of the locals. It's all there in one form or another. Blame the parents is yet to come.

The Met have also said Madeleine may not have left the apartment alive. Maybe alive; maybe dead; "there was a window of opportunity in which an abduction may have taken place" or words to that effect. None of which really says anything or gives much of a clue what The Met are thinking unless one wishes to put words in their mouth.

The police always like to think the worse. Obviously, in the absence of a body, they cannot determine any cause of death and therefore cannot distinguish between death being deliberate or accidental.

I watched the first episode and found it quite riveting, albeit predictable, with knowledge aforethought. Seven years ago I would have been shocked. How could people be so cruel? Now I am merely curious to see the drama unfold.
I suppose it must be loosely based on the disappearance of Madeleine. But then the disappearance of any child these days would be likely to follow the same pattern of human unkindness in some quarters.
Nesbitt as ever, is brilliant.

I didnt think much of it. The plot was full of holes, and i would not compare it with the missing McCann case not at all.
I just been on digital spy, and a lot of the viewers hadnt even realised the dark haired women was the mother lol...or with the liaision police officer.
Where did the yellow scarf come from, the boy was not wearing it after he came out of the pool.
The father put the bags on a chair OUTSIDE the cafe and the boy was following behind him holding his hand, i never saw his scarf on his body at the time.
Outside the father picks up bags from the path....
The father of the Nesbitts character intimated there was a problem in the thier past so could it be a revenge attack.
I could hardly hear some of the dialogue.
So one charity shop writes down everyones address with what they left? Right sure they did.
BUT I am going to have another look at that scene, as I only saw the scarf written down, the women in the house, said it could have got muddled up with a box of other things, so why were they not logged too.
No I found it thick and hard to follow. I dont like Nesbitt anyway sadly. I might just keep an eye on it see how it pans out, but I expect the plot could have just been done in a 2.5 our film rather then stretch it out for 8 hours.

Oh, interesting.
Have you seen the whole plot then?
In the first episode?

I am not going to speculate on how the yellow scarf came into it, but you are right, Slarty, this is worth thinking of. But I did get a sense of something lurking before the child disappeared.
I didn't have any problem with the child's mother changing her hair colour, or with the detective. And as for the rest of the clothes being logged in at the second hand shop, they could have been but no one was looking for anything else. And the French are notorious for paperwork anyway.

Big holes. I just re watched it, there is no way that scarf was around the childs neck and the father found his rucksack and toy on the path.....which could have contained it.?
Also one minute they are getting out of the pool and its light and then they are in pitch black, does it come down that fast in the med?

It is a drama which is billed as showing some of the emotional upheaval suffered by those closest to missing children.
To replicate that, no doubt the writer researched information about families who have suffered such trauma … and I think in just the first episode has captured those destructive effects as well as the desperation and guilt.
Madeleine McCann and Ben Needham are the only British children who may have been taken by an abductor while abroad … apart from that sad fact … I don’t see a direct link to either case.
In the drama … an abduction alert, complete with photograph, was sent out timeously … this was explained as enabling resources unavailable to the local police force to be immediately put into play.
I found that interesting as I don't think it replicated what happened in either Madeleine or Ben's case ... but it does illustrate what the procedure would have been in 2006, when 'The Missing' is set.

The man on his own who walked past and looked at them when they were playing in the pool?? Everyone else was watching the World Cup game.
I thought the portrayal of the child's mother trying to get on with her life ... and not quite managing it ... powerful.
The co-incidence of the second hand shop ??? well ... it is a drama ... but who is to say such things are impossible?

France has long been hot on Alerts. I can remember posters of missing children posted in my area before 2007. And these of children missing from many miles away. And of Banners under Television Programmes, and flashed on Motorways.

I wonder if that is why it was set in 2006 and in France? The French version of the Amber alert had just been created in February 2006, but Belgium was still thinking about it a year later.

Never thought of that, because you just assume it is the logical thing to do ... but I think it is highly probable ... and it is only very recently that campaigns have been successful in its introduction Europe wide.
Maybe this will be a good drama which is going to cover all the bases and raise a bit of awareness in the process ... the descent into alcoholism by the father was portrayed in a believable and sensitive way ... good writing and great acting when you consider this was only an introductory episode.
Just to illustrate the fallibility of eye witness recognition (mine anyway) … when the mother ran after the child she mistakenly thought was Ollie and the father introduced himself as an officer who had been assigned to the case … is that the man she was portrayed as living with several years later?

The grey haired watcher could've got the scarf when they were in the pool (it is last seen on the seat in the restaurant). The scarf would be missing that's why the father is looking for it. The watcher is first prime suspect. It's no coincidence that the boy was snatched when a goal had scored. The perfect time just like Smithman did in the chaos of the alarm.

Watched it again last night, and there was something to do with something beginning with Cham.... that the journalist, the police detective and the mother aren't going to talk about. Sorry, I can't watch it again, but perhaps someone else can spot it.
It sounds to me like a set up, possibly to protect the life of the child, from someone who knows too much. If you see what I mean.

I don't think so. It jusmps from one time zone to another so fast that it's a bit confusing at times.
I think it's a hint of something dodgy in the main local cop's past (Ziane).
The mother rings the hack because she wants him to go back to "Châlons" to find out what Tony's discovered. She clearly doesn't want to contact him herself. (2014)
The hack had clearly been following the story since the beginning and seems to have blackmailed the main local cop (Ziane) into getting a scoop in return for keeping quiet about this Charmartaines business. (2006)
In the bar scene when Tony is talking to Julien about the scarf, he says that Laurence (the lady cop) wasn't in the slightest interested, and then, "Maybe Ziane, if he wasn't rotting in jail". (2014)

@ Brietta. I hadn't twigged as first, but, yes, it does seem that the guy the mother is engaged to is the British FLO (he was wearing a cap when they met with his son in the street). It's interesting how simple details like that can make make people seem different or similar. The other clue is that the FLO's son is called James, as is her fiancé's teenage son.

I missed that entirely, Carana, thanks for pointing it out ... can hardly wait to find out what Zaine was getting up to that got him jailed.
It has turned the plot a bit on its head for me ... I wasn't too keen on Zaine because of his early treatment of Laurence ... but if he's OK by Tony ... he's OK by me.
I wanted to know exactly how Julien came about the injury to his leg ... ... with eight episodes to cover, they're not going to reveal all in the first. I didn't like the hack at all either in his 2006 persona or his 2014 one.

Matelot returns with filthy rich wife takes child oriental bird tops herself; the end (after much singing and prancing),I never could figure out why the hand maiden was a motorbike though. Carmen anyone? Sharon and Tracey at the Rothman's fag factory in Basildon with sundry Southend cop villains and few squaddies from Colchester barracks. Nuffin like a nice bit o' Bizzitt.

No not really, however I disagree that TV drama now is of a low standard. Compared to what? People have a tendency to romanticise old telly programmes of yesteryear but if you watch them now they often haven't aged very well. Personally I think TV drama in recent years has never been better with an absolute plethora of highly watchable series with high production values, great scripts and excellent acting. Of course it's much more fashionable and easier to sneer.

What would you consider worth watching? What aspect of the Missing do you find unworthy? Is it the acting? The dialogue? The cinematography perhaps? Or perhaps it's the premise? If there is a plot twist which finds that the Dad dunnit would that perhaps elevate it in your eyes? Just wondering what it is about this particular drama that McCann sceptics find so unpalatable.

Now, here's a thing! The evil MSM has published an average review of last night's episode! Whatever next?! Still, I agree with some of the criticisms in this - from today's Times:
Not for the first time, you might say, I feel as if I have been watching a different programme from the rest of the nation. I am clearly meant to have strong opinions about The Missing and I really don’t. As a father, I should be chilled to the freezer cabinet by the disappearance of a five-year-old. As a viewer am I not outraged that, post the McCann tragedy, child abduction is seen fit for TV drama? Yet missing children are not an uncommon dramatic trope; we endured The Secret of Crickley Hall on BBC One in 2012, Torn on ITV in 2007, and various episodes of Without a Trace on Sky. Literature has been breaching this taboo for years: Ian McEwan’s The Child in Time, Peter Pan, Oliver Twist, The Turn of the Screw and Lolita all feature it. To be frank, I know the difference between fact and fiction, and I can cope. The question, as always, is how the subject is treated. The Missing clearly deals with little Oliver’s disappearance in a more sophisticated way than the silly ghost story Crickley Hall. The procedural aspects — the Amber Alert procedure et al — are, apparently, accurate. There is proper emphasis on the emotional consequences for Oliver’s parents: in last night’s second episode Tony and Emily had their first fight and first sexual failure since the disappearance, the first missteps towards their foretold separation in the present day. James Nesbitt as Tony is giving his all to his portrayal of grief turned to rage. The filming is artily melancholy. For all that, however, the Williams brothers’ drama constantly teeters on the edge of whodunit hackery: the second-hand shop with the vital clue; the suddenly discovered child’s drawing in the cellar; the demonic journalist with the bottomless expense account; even the “philosophical” French cop, playing the Nazis’ favourite Liszt rhapsody, because it reminds him we are all a mix of good and evil. The most offensive thing about The Missing is that, because it has subtitles and “ing” in its title, it thinks it is as good as The Killing. It isn’t.

Just watched the second episode, and it seems to me that any disappearance and or abduction of a young child is going to be predictable in this day and age. Fact or Fiction. Bearing in mind that we don't have the ending to The Missing or to Madeleine at the moment. And blaming the parents is also predictable.
As a Drama, I think The Missing is well worth watching. Far better than The Killing.

Taking the equation of Madeliene McCann out of the equation, I watched the second episode and its sooooooooooo slow.
It moves between two many things and never explains what its about.
For example, a picture of a man with his face all bashed up in 2006, is then linked with the guy working in the hospice in the presence....including a scar on his nose.....who is he? Or did i miss something when i nodded off.
As to the drawing in the basement are we to believe that the exact same drawing in the fathers hands is not enough to have opened the case again?
Doesnt seem to showing the French in a very sympathetic light.
So now we have business man thrown in with big reward, and a link between known pedophile and his good self, so is this going to turn into a PEDOPHILE RING.....
Also the sighting of the witness which was paid for by the business man, could this have happened also with the McCanns sighting of JT or The Smiths lol.
Its so identical now to the McCann case i didnt think it was at the beginning but it has taken on the same scenarios, without the Tapas 7 in the picture....but all the rest, ruined town because of the child being taken, parents involvement or blaming parents, book written, big reward, business man involved, child missing 8 years, it is almost written to loosely fit the McCanns case why?
Does the playwrite know something we dont lol, and will reveal it through the plot....we are now bringing in sinister possible Pedophile rings.............(all the above said tongue in cheek of course).
For me I dont think its drama at its best, its ruined with all the toing and froing. I think they should have stayed with 2006 and worked through the case, and then perhaps have had a break until present day, so we would have understood the plot that was going on......

That's the way it's done these days. Backwards and forwards. Same thing in The Madeleine Case. Just about everything is revisited, especially when there is no new news. And at least if it's fiction they can come up with an ending.
Okay, so I'm the only one interested in the ending, although I somewhat doubt this.
Besides, we all know what would happen if The McCanns allowed a film.

I tend to agree. Every situation will be slightly different, but there will be common elements. I find it interesting as well.
While looking for something else, I came across a summary of an abduction I'd forgotten about: a 5-year-old boy abducted by a paedo in August 2007 in Roubaix (north of France). An Alerte Enlèvement was launched and two of the calls that came in (one from a former inmate where the paedo had served time, and one from a taxi driver) eventually led the police to a garage where they found the kid, sexually abused, but alive. The guy, a compulsive paedophile, had only just got out of prison for similar offences. He was supposed to undergo chemical castration, but then seems to have taken off with a prescription for Viagra instead. Some aspects of The Missing might well seem familiar to the family of that little boy as well. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affaire_Francis_Evrard

Taking the equation of Madeliene McCann out of the equation, I watched the second episode and its sooooooooooo slow.
It moves between two many things and never explains what its about.

I still think that it's inspired from elements of a number of cases. There are indeed aspects that remind me of the Madeleine case, but also of others - see the case I posted just further up in answer to Eleanor.
- A five-year-old boy snatched from the North of France, an Alerte launched and a compulsive paedophile. In The Missing, there is the compulsive paedo, but it seems at the moment that he didn't take Ollie. And, thankfully, the real little boy was found alive.
ETA: I agree that it can be a little confusing when it keeps going back and forth with unexplained aspects. You either have to concentrate or watch it more than once, like some books where you have to zap back to the clue that you'd missed earlier on.

I wouldn't call it light or entertainment really - it's quite heavy going and it demands more of the viewer than an episode of Corrie does, and I'm not sure that the subject matter can be described as entertaining. I'm not sure what the right word is - compulsive perhaps? Unmissable? Pardon the pun.

I am starting to think that the whole program is dangerous. It draws parallels with real life and whichever way the plot goes could influence the more susceptible as to those real life cases.

We don't know which way the plot will go, we currently have the wealthy benefactor involved with the paedophile. Whatever happens next doesn't help the McCann case but merely puts thoughts in people's minds.

I see your point, actually. I see it as inspired by elements of several cases, but woven into a dramatic fictional narrative that isn't intended to reflect any one case. I can see elements of three cases so far and there may be more.
I expect that there will be several leitmotifs to it, not all of which will be directly related to the hunt for the missing child: different ways of trying to cope, mutual distrust between the family and the police, the media, and so on.
I doubt that it will change anyone's long-held convictions as to what may have happened in the McCann case, although there is always the "danger" that some may end up reflecting on whether their constant spewing of bile is justified. Time will tell.
One of the most obnoxious comments I've read on a certain forum was that it clearly bore no relationship to the McCann case as at least Ollie's parents cared about him. How sad and deluded is that?

I don't see it as a dangerous TV drama, but I do see Slarti's point that there is a potential danger of the "susceptible" deciding that it is a 'cleverly disguised' factual account of the McCann case (i.e., to the exclusion of any other), mainly because some people seem to have trouble distinguishing fact from fiction.
I don't see anyone with long-held convictions changing their minds on the basis of a TV drama.
It just might make some more moderate people reflect on the amount of abuse that the McCann family have received over the years, and possibly examine their own role in adding to it. But I won't hold my breath.

I think you have that right; why on earth would a paedophile leave all that incriminating unencrypted video evidence lying around in a launch with next to no security and which was able to be broken into with such ease?
But I'm not sure the involvement of a very rich and powerful person is highly improbable, when one considers Casa Pia and the accusations presently being made about those in the corridors of power in Britain.
We don't actually know how the storyline will pan out, it has a way to go yet, it is still holding my interest, so I will stick with it till the last episode. I do think it is important to remember that this is a work of fiction ... and likening any living individual to a character in it ... is a gross discourtesy as well as not being very clever ... unlike davel, I am sincerely hoping the parents didn't dunnit though ... I would probably suffer a seizure laughing at the usual suspects jumping on the vindication bandwagon.

I've been sympathetic towards him since early on because of his realisation of the damage he was capable of causing to others and trying to address it by getting treatment ... chemical castration?
I can understand the father's rage and I think his actions were true to the characterisation so well portrayed by Nesbitt (I think he is a pain) but if he has killed Ian he has killed any chance of finding out if he had information about his son. Maybe that is one of the reasons he turned to drink.

I thought last night's episode was particularly good.
It is certainly beginning to give us a glimpse of what is going on the background in the lives of the main players.
The portrayal of emotions was particularly raw with even unsympathetic characters being rounded out a bit more. Oliver's mother seeing him everywhere she looked was poignant.
Who do you think holds the key, Alfred?
I keep changing my mind. At the moment I find the dynamics between the younger paedophile and the journalist developing into something. That cleaner!!! words fail me ... but there must be people around just like him.
Must admit, I did not like the bloody murder one little bit ... even the short reprise at the beginning made me cringe ... but it does explain a lot about James Nesbit's character and the turn of events with his wife.

I'm really interested in the way the writer has muddedied the water with respect to who is a victim and who a perpetrator. Nothing in life is black and white and I think this drama portrays that very subtlety.

I fnd the intricate storyline and the portrayal of characters in this TV drama fascinating. A welcome change from manichean hollywoodism.
There must have been quite a lot of research into various cases. The dad killing who he thought murdered his child relates to another well-known case.

I thought the father killed the builder because he admitted to being a paedophile, and harming his own daughter.
It's probably one of those things where everything will fall into place at The End. And then I shall have to watch it again.
I think it is very good.

I don't like to second guess the outcome too much. It's interesting that at the moment the most sympathetic character is the young paedophile who (as far as we know so far) has actually done nothing wrong, all the others have skeletons, regrets, behaved immorally or illegally etc. We shall see...2 more episodes to go.

Perhaps you could be a little less subtle? Are you insinuating that the programme makers, whilst featuring a plot in which a couple's child is abducted, probably by paedophiles, were having a dig at the McCanns by including a line about most abductions being committed by the parents?

The drama is loosely based on the McCann case so you pays your money and you make your own mind up.

The experienced detective realising the father was responsible for the later abduction after watching a press conference...
Did you miss the bit where the female detective phoned the retired detective to thank him for his assistance and his advice that the latest abduction was a family affair ... she said she had never known him to be wrong.
If you remember that is the guy who has come out of retirement to help and who has put his neck on the line for the missing boy's father.
This is a drama ... based on no single kidnapping ... but is a composite of many.

The parallels and sound bites are applicable in any missing child case I am familiar with.
Don't you think it is odd you can't watch a fictional drama without having Madeleine's case on your mind? Must be over exposure to Lizzie Taylor.
There are aspects that I've noticed that remind me of at least 4-5 cases, perhaps more, amongst which the McCann case is possibly the one with the least potential links.

So its chase the coin owner now?
Suspects pop up just like in another real life disappearance. Vincent Bourg and Ian Garrett ruled out.
Eighth and final episode next Tuesday promises ' closure' according to writer brothers, Jack and Harry Williams.

Hit BBC1 drama The Missing is set to return for a second series, with the writers in talks with the BBC about a follow-up to the tense thriller.
Around 7.7 million people have been watching each episode of the compelling eight-part abduction drama, which stars James Nesbitt.
The big audience and critical acclaim means both the BBC and writers Jack and Harry Williams are keen to do another series. “It’s in negotiations, I think that’s fair to say,” said Jack.
“It’s definitely something we are keen to do and [the BBC] feel like they’re keen to do but to say any more may be too difficult.”
The story of Tony Hughes’ (played by Nesbitt) eight-year search for his five-year-old son who disappeared while the family were on holiday in France during the 2006 World Cup has gripped viewers since it began in October.
With its dual timelines, finely tuned acting from the French and English actors, and plot twists, The Missing has kept audiences guessing as to the outcome of the investigations into the abduction of Oliver Hughes.
The brothers said it was difficult to talk about whether any of the same characters would return in a second series without giving away the ending of this one.
Jack said: “All we can say is that this [series] will have closure to it … I don’t want someone at the BBC to kill me!” Harry said they hoped viewers would feel like they have been on a journey.
The Williams brothers wanted to make sure their drama leaves viewers satisfied with the ending. “We don’t want people to leave feeling frustrated,” said Jack. “You do feel a responsibility. I hope people do enjoy the ending. I think it’s very true to the very first hour that you see.”

Don't know about Bourg ... his desperation to keep taking his medication despite it making him ill ... and his obvious desire to atone for something in his past + his connection to Garrett ... keep him in the frame for me. I think there is an angle there.

I hate it The Missing, i think they could have done it so much quicker, I hate the toing and froing in time lines, and get so confused it spoils it for me.
The last one for example, it took me ages to realise that Garrat was just in his wife's imagination. And what was Vincent doing there on the boat was that his mother? I wonder if he was a son perhaps he was the daughter???? yeh i know well why not lol.......the rest of it is confusing lets chuck something else in the mix.....
I thought the girl with her throat cut was the second time and then I realised a few minutes later when she was trying to cut her brothers throat it was showing how she got it the first time...jeez give me a break.
I was of the opinion that Mark had something to do with it, but I watched 3 episodes yesterday and I am changing my mind. I am not so sure about Baptiste did you not see his video camera on the hive? it was the same model as Garrats that Tony found.........did he abuse his daughter is that why she is drug addict?
Something odd about him.....was the sober medal that was found belonging to the hotel owner a plant or a coincidence as she showed Tony the medals and it was a sober medal the policeman found, but was it his. Could Baptiste have been an alcoholic and it was his? His daughter is an addict, addiction can run in families.....
Why didnt the reporter hand it in, what sort of bloke is he? He could have had this case solved years back and he chose not too, what kind of man does that to a family.....
Who knew that the guy in prison was going to see his son that day? Bapiste and did the Mayor?
Baptiste knew the drug undercover guy was going to talk to him and then he was dead......
Baptiste couldnt wait to go and see the house belonging to garrat for evidence but was it incriminating against him self or was he genuinely thinking Tony had something to do with it.
Are the French thick...if they find Garrats boat floating in the lake the assumption is the body is there too lol. Oh yeh Tony takes off his shirt and goes into the freezing river comes out and has a blue Tshirt on where did that come from or did i miss something lol?
I hate Tony i feel sorry he has lost his son, but he is a miserable horrible man, who beats people up, EVEN BEFORE his son went missing.
Going back to that, did Bapiste knowing tony's short fuse plant in his mind it was Garrat, hoping he would do his dirty work for him. Perhaps a falling out and he needed to die......Why did Garrat put himself into such a vulnerable position in the boat with Tony, he knew he had a short and dangerous fuse? Makes no sense, or was he hoping he would kill him and put him out of his misery, OR had it arranged for someone to intervene??? I just find it all so odd.......
I think there is a ring pedo it has to be pretty influential people running it, because of the deaths, and how the house was cleaned, who knew the people were on holiday etc etc.....
The cleaner guy said he saw blood and cleaned it. Why did Baptiste not insist that the cellar was again checked for forensics as it is a known fact blood can be found in tiny cracks and areas, and it could have proven if it was Ollies blood......
Nah sorry i find some of it weird.......I struggled to watch the 3 episodes and had a headache and vertigo after lol.......
I think the key to the mystery is Vincent ...I think he is linked with Mary garrats wife and i think he has the boy and was protecting him perhaps now that would be closure if he handed him over to the family.
What worries me is there is all this stuff we have had to understand and digest, and yet only one hour left to expose it all.........I hope it aint going to be a damp squid.
All the above is written kind of tongue in cheek, just to throw some rubbish into the melting pot lol....
I think either the Mayor was involved or Bapiste, or both....or.......
Actually just watched it again....
I am not so sure about Baptiste did you not see his video camera on the hive? Its actually something he uses in the hives it does look like a video camera though, so scrub that idea lol....

There is no book accusing the parents written by the lead detective.
There are no internet campaigns.
There were no leaflet drops.
There was no campaign to try stop Ollie's case being re-opened.
NOPE ... IT IS NOTHING LIKE MADELEINE'S CASE.
It is a drama consisting of generic elements of child kidnappings.
There's no fund. No misinformation campaign. No libel actions. No neglect. No PR representative. The couple are open and likeable.
You're right. It's not a bit like the McCann case.

Man killed in boat ... ??you've got me there chum, where is the parallel with Madeleine's case??
The kate and Gerry leaving portugal scene ... so the parents of a child missing on holiday must never return home? Oh, I see.
The fighting to reopen a case ... something in common with Katrice Lee and Ben Needham there.
The fake abduction ... would that refer to the fake abductor the PJ and SY are looking for?
The reporter with the info ... you would need to provide a cite for that before I could comment.
The bribes behind the scene ... you would need to provide a cite for that before I could comment.
The drawing from the child ... I believe the majority of children do make drawings
The finding of the t shirt ... Madeleine didn't lose a tee shirt

Illegal hacking by the reporter.
The only reference I know of that phones may have been tapped was the official PJ tapping of Robert Murat's phone, the transcript of the call between him and the British police officer is in the files.
So IMO it is not another parallel to Madeleine's case.

I think you will find the damages received from the press in out of court settlement were for libellous statements picked up from the Portuguese media who in turn were printing the lies leaked to them from a source close to the investigation ... "100% DNA" immediately springs to mind.

Couple describe the ordeal they suffered at hands of media and make impassioned plea for press regulation
**snip** Kate and Gerry McCann made an impassioned plea for press regulation after delivering an emotional account of their treatment by the tabloids, describing the string of "disgusting" and "offensive" stories published about them.
Appearing as witnesses at the Leveson inquiry into press standards, the McCanns gave the most powerful testimony heard so far, speaking for nearly two hours without a break as they described the ordeal they have been subjected to by parts of the media since their daughter Madeleine went missing in Portugal four years ago.
Kate McCann told a hushed courtroom at the Royal Courts of Justice in London how she felt "totally violated" after the publication by the News of the World of her personal diaries in which she recorded her thoughts about her missing daughter. http://www.theguardian.com/media/2011/nov/23/leveson-inquiry-mccann-testimony-tabloids

One being the paper where she revealed she could not make love to Gerry.
A classic illustration of the McCann's trying to get sympathy.
Trouble is, with analysis, it's a load of rollocks.

THIS IS THE MISSING thread is it on.....a tad off subject for a few pages lol.....
Anyway about The Missing.
there was a BBC trailer for The missing last night and it showed someone being dragged away by police and i think Tony and his ex watching...i couldnt see clearly who it was......
I really think the Key is Vincent. I think the story was made complicated to fit 8 episodes and when we come down to it in the end it will be as simple as that........
I have been saying Baptiste, tongue in cheek, as there is something about him I am not sure of but i think it comes down to several relationships in the end being on dodgy ground.......it isnt always men who run pedophile rings, and it isnt always men who want to abduct children.......
Sadly Vincent was abused by his father, and Garrat was abused by his grandfather....and so the circle keeps revolving.
There is obviously some good in Vincent as he is desperately trying to get well. I am thinking right now he took the boy.....for Garrat and after what he did felt so horrified by it he sickened himself because he became a monster like Garrat but was scared for his mothers life....who was his mother, I think it was or could have been Mary Garrat, and I think it was Garrat who was the father abusing Vincent. Garrat told Tony he didnt take his son, well he didnt not technically he was taken for him. Lets face it anyone who has over 50 tapes of children being abused, the odds of it being him are pretty stacked up....I think even Garratt had enough of being a monster and knew by confessing all this to Tony, Tony would kill him as he was a coward himself (monsters like him usually are afraid to kill themselves).
The sobriety medal doesnt have a name on it, and it could easily belong to anyone. Tony is very quick to come to conclusions, and he isnt or wasnt always right, and to be honest, I dont like him I think he is a murderer regardless of what or who he kills......
I think there was a ring and it will evolve several players, The Mayor, and the owners of the hotel....thats it folks lol.............

Good analysis of the story so far ... it will be interesting to see if it pans out like that in the final episode.
Maybe you should take up script writing as well as posting here?
Don't know about the Mayor though ... I think he is a politician with his eye on the next election ... and I do think he is concerned about the expense and publicity damage to the local economy

Given the high profile nature of the McCann case it is not difficult to draw parallels with The Missing.
A British couple on holiday with their offspring albeit three in the case of the McCanns and a single male child in the drama. A hotel or apartment complex forming the backdrop to events and fulfilling a central role thereafter. Then we have the involvement of both British and foreign police liaison officers, a somewhat normal procedure in such cases.
The plot of the tv drama does differ significantly from the McCann story but there are still moments of similarity. The media scrum outside the hotel/apartment complex, the use of a people carrier driven by the parents, the investigative reporting suggesting parental involvement.
I have no doubt the writers drew on the McCann case for inspiration, denial is futile.

I will agree with comments posted earlier that the constant to-ing and fro-ing over 6 years does become tedious to follow at times. I have to keep looking to see whether the main characters are unshaven or have a beard...bloody hell! Every time I nod off and awaken we are in a different time zone. @)(++(*

LOL John i get so confused. The start of the last episode I think was Indian Ocean Present day.....
There was boat on the sea beautiful and sunny, and Mary Garrat, Garrats wife sat on the deck sunbathing. A crew member comes out and asked if it was ok if he cleaned up, and proceeded to clean the deck.
Then you see her calling Garrat......and they talk and he conversation he says Until Death us do part.....then you go back in time again.......
Next thing i know towards the end Garrat is brutally murdered by Tony lol, and it turns out Mary is in the looney bin....Jeez give me a break....
Then one scene, the girl who might know something, backs out as she doesnt want to have her throat cut again...she just survived last time...then after a bit you see her in a cafe talking to someone and then has a knife stuck in her throat lol.....omg i was so upset i thought she had been killed...turns out move forward into time again, it was just showing you what happened to her first time..............
Jeez i find it all too confusing.....It spoils it for me as not only that i find it hard to hear some of the dialogue not sure why.
I dont understand why they couldnt just do the story from the time the boy went missing or before then, 8 episodes of toing and froing. I cant see how it can finish so quickly we only have an hour left......and lots of things need explaining...

That was my theory too. Only my theory was that a car was driven by a teenager...
This would be only possible if Gerry did not lock the front door and did not pull them well...
Another thing that comes to my mind are PDL dogs.. we learnt back in 2007 that the dog owners in PDL let the dogs out in the night time.. I've never seen this fact discussed..

BBC1’s abduction thriller The Missing is to return for a second series, the corporation has confirmed.
The second series will keep The Missing’s overall structure – a story told over two time frames – but with a fresh case, new characters and a new location.
James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor starred in the first series as an English couple struggling, in the present day, to come to terms with the abduction of their son on a family holiday in France during the 2006 World Cup.
Nesbitt’s character, Tony Hughes, works with the French lead detective on the 2006 case, now retired, to solve the mystery.
The BBC gave viewers a taster trail of the second series as the first run ended on Tuesday evening. The trail gave viewers subtle clues pointing towards series two, accompanied by a voiceover from the lead French detective Julien Baptiste, played by Tcheky Karyo.
Karyo says: “To lose somebody can destroy a person. But to find them again, when so much has passed … Well, sometimes … that can be worse.”
The eight-part drama was written by Jack and Harry Williams, attracting a consolidated audience of nearly 8 million including seven-day catch up viewing.
In a MediaGuardian interview in late November, the Williams brothers hinted that a second series was on the cards, with Jack saying the first series “will have closure to it”.
He added: “I hope people do enjoy the ending. I think it’s very true to the very first hour that you see.” Former actor Harry said he hoped viewers have “a sense of closure for the series, like you’ve been on a journey”.
Made by independent producer New Pictures for BBC1, the second outing will have the same core creative team with the Williams brothers on writing duties and Tom Shankland directing.
The Missing has attracted critical plaudits and recently secured two Golden Globe nominations for best mini-series or motion picture made for television, and best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for O’Connor.
Produced by New Pictures in association with Two Brothers Pictures and Playground, the second series of The Missing will air on BBC1 and the Starz cable channel in the US.

Not sure about the cat but she could have heard dogs. There were tens of dogs every night in PDL. The owners let the dogs out every night and they play around in packs..

Didn't know that about the dogs over there. Would the tourist areas not be a little more controlled? Not a place I would visit if I could be attacked by a pack of dogs at night whilst out walking. I was thinking about the toy connection, with Oliver having a fascination for foxes, but I don't believe for one minute Madeleine left the apartment of her own accord.

I'm not sure we are Eleanor. Maybe the new series - apparently about a new case, will dovetail with this case at some point.
I wasn't sure whether Tony's remark that only George(?) had actually seen the body was a hint to us that he could still be alive, or whether it was a pointer to Tony's continuing obsession which became so self-destructive at the end.
If that was the end of it - with nothing else to come - then I must say I'm a bit disappointed. IMO there were a lot of questions left unanswered.
It would be good IMO if the boy at the end - (who Tony left the drawing with) - finds an identical drawing somewhere amongst his own old stuff - maybe during a clear-out, which makes him start to wonder............

Well I'm not giving up yet. That Romanian could have made the child look dead when he actually wasn't. And then sold him to a Russian family.
Watch the next series, I say. He could pop up in that.

The hotel owner SAID that the nasty gang guy had killed him (which ties in with greyhairman clearing up blood), but then what's Ollie's signature drawing doing etched on a frosty window in Russia or wherever Tony ended up?
Was that a "dream" episode? Did Tony draw it himself out of wishful thnking?
Or could it be Ollie (and the gang guy didn't kill him, after all)? There's no confirmation from the hotel owner who wasn't in the house (that's just what he was told), gang guy wasn't apprehended to confirm it either, and the magistrate / mayor only had the say-so of gangman. And, of course, there's no body.
There are also a few annoying loose ends. There's no explanation as to why the "respectable couple" in the park were bribed to give Vincent a false alibi, for example.
If there hadn't been the glimpse of the frosted window, I'd have accepted that the child did die and Tony had just gone mad out of denial and grief... but the window does leave me with a lingering doubt. Perhaps that's the desired effect?

I believe it is the end of it, the new series is a new case with new actors..........
I was gutted at the ending to be honest, so many things not answered......what was the point to it all....?
I kind of felt let down. It was like being given a million dollars in a safe, and never knowing the combination lol....
So who was Vincents mother? Was it Mary? What happened to Molly? Why did the introduce Monique the painter? Why was the policeman killed in the prison what for? He didnt even know who the medal belonged to, and had given it to the journalist who kept it.........If the journalist had hadnt it back the case would have been solved at the beginning, but nothing happened to him, no arrest nothing....... Garrat what was all that about.
The image of the drawing at the end I believe was simply Tony he had lost the plot.....
The boy was dead, there was a pool of blood on the floor from his throat being cut............the Romanian was ruthless and would not have left a witness....
Waste of 8 weeks ..............................

TBH I don't know what to think Colom. We shall have to wait to see what happens in the next series. I'm hoping that because they dwelled a lot on the boy at the end, (zoomed into his face) and Tony was convinced it was his son - that it might not be ''THE END''. Ollies drawing is now with that boy and seems to have been the main thread which consistently popped up from beginning end.
It could be that the murder scene was deliberately contrived to convince George(?) that it was all over - and so that the two men could then do what they wanted to with Oliver without any further interference or questions being asked.
I agree there were lots of unanswered questions and I too am wondering what the significance of Garret was. On the other hand I found it quite difficult to follow at times and so maybe I missed something.
The acting was brilliant though.
Apparently two different endings were recorded. I'd love to know what the other one was.

The policeman killed in prison was due to him being overheard saying that he would talk for a price, I think it was just a general killing of an informer, nothing specific.

Me too Benice i found some of it made me feel queasy all the going and froing i found it deflected me from the plot and some times i totally lost it lol..I had to watch it again.....
No from what i read on the BBC there is just going to be a new series and this one is closed.
I just think the ending was in two parts, Emily had moved on and she accepted the death of her son. Tony perhaps because of his guilt of loosing him in the first place, and killing Garrat had gone insane, and was simply wandering Europe looking for any look alike.......
So in a way perhaps it makes us think ourselves. Would we be the ones to accept closure... or keep going hoping he is alive........its a difficult one isnt it.
I dont know how they could end it really I feel they let the Romanian get away with murder.....
And was Alaine any more disgusting then Tony who bashed Garrats brains out? Alaine his actions were not deliberate he was a drunk driver........Tony killed Garrat, and throughout the series showed a tendancy towards terrible violence.
I still dont get Vincent.................was his mother Mary Garrat? What really happened to Molly, and if vincent was Garrats son, how come he never called him father etc, and why was it all a mystery, yet at the end when he was hanging wasnt the photo of vincent as a child wasnt that MARY garrats wife?
Jeez given me a headache lol.......

LOL Colombo. I can imagine many a pub discussion as to whether the child actually died or not...
I agree that there are loose ends... but then perhaps that's the point? Real life dramas don't usually work out as neatly as 58-minute detective episodes with every aspect made evident.
Aside from the fate of the little boy, I find the contrasting portrayal of the parents to be quite poignant.
Both are distraught by grief, but they have very different personalities and deal with the tragedy in different ways.
On the surface, Emily (a quieter, more private personality) appears to accept that her child is dead and attempts to move on with her life (with the loving support of others), but in fact is repressing the grief deep down inside. She can't cope with any more false hopes, but gradually accepts that Tony may indeed have found something. At the end, she seems to find closure in the explanation given.
Tony has a more volatile and combative personality and his behaviour in the face of that grief isolates him, partly of his own making. He won't give up, however tenuous the lead may be. His perseverance did indeed unravel some answers, but leaves a number of questions.
Has his grief made him go mad, or is there still a possibility that Ollie could still be alive somewhere?
Emily saw an apparition on her wedding day, but seemed to accept that he was there with her in spirit and no longer as the physical manifestation of her little boy.
Did Tony etch that drawing on the frosty window himself, as a manifestation of his denial, or not?

Well it's not every day that a telly series has people discussing it in such earnest detail so it has certainly exercised the grey matter whilst also entertaining (if that's the right word).

At least it doesn't involve speculating about real people caught up in a real drama...

Great post, I think you hit the nail on the head.
Wasnt the image drawn on the inside of the window? Will have to look i have it recorded lol...if thats the case......No dont start me off again lol....

Zeige the cleanerman said he was only sent to sanitise the house, no questions asked, so why was he watching the road where dishy detective found the coin? Why no blood on the road? I think Alain lied. He didn't run the boy over at all, he just kidnapped him and abused him, then ran to his brother for help because he had been imprisoned before. Georges/Garratt were part of a paedophile ring. Georges lied about the boy being dead. Remember the remark Garratt made about Ollie being a lovely boy, just before Tony killed him? Why didn't Sylvie suspect Alain? And how could Ollie, if he had been run over & rendered unconscious, have drawn that picture on the wall in the house?
