The parents of Madeleine McCann have compiled a heart-rending list of all the things they miss about their long-lost daughter in the run-up to Christmas.

The list accompanies a picture of the couple standing at their front door in Rothley, Leics.

The photo, taken for the charity Missing People’s Home for Christmas Exhibition, is among 12 pictures of families who have missing loved ones.

The exhibition – at The Crypt in London’s St-Martin-in-the-Fields – highlights the plight of thousands of people across Britain who are living in limbo after the disappearance of a family member.

A charity spokesperson said: “These powerful images depict families standing by their front doors, symbolising the hopes and fears experienced by those desperately waiting for news.”

The picture of heart doctor Gerry and former GP Kate , both 47, is on public view until November 22. The couple, parents to 10-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, refuse to give up hope of finding their eldest child, who would now be 12.

Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007.

Missing People’s Jo Youle said: “The exhibition will give the public the opportunity to stand with these families missing a loved one by sharing messages of support.”

Thats really sad

That is the only problem i have with this
Whole debacle, if they were involved in any way, how could they keep up a pretense for Years...I suppose keeping out of prison is a good motivator, well a big one I guess

Who knows, only them

But they keep shootng themselves in the foot....time and time again...they will not give a single honest direct interview without scripted questions and  answers, if I missed one please cite it

After 8 years they should do something about it instead of simply talking about it.

Offer a £ million reward to anyone who can reveal Maddie's whereabouts with a guarantee of immunity from prosecution and anonymity.

They have nothing to lose but everything to gain!

I'm not sure they could or should do anything at all while Madeleine's disappearance remains an active case in which leads are still being followed.

Neither would it be possible for the Drs McCann to guarantee immunity or anonymity to anyone ... imo that would be something only the authorities in Portugal and Britain could achieve and I think even they would have difficulty doing that in the full glare of the attendant publicity.

What is the betting such a move would encourage more FOI requests ... more letters to MPs ... more petitions etc ... from those anxious for Justice for Madeleine.

The recent dinner fund raiser for Missing people has already been subject to ridicule ... this poignant article will probably attract much of the same opprobrium from the same sources.

There aren't two sides to this discussion. Kate & Gerry, like many other parents,  have lost their child. They miss her
terribly and most of us can't even begin to imagine the pain & torment which they endure daily.
Anyone who can try to make a mockery of such grief should be examining their own soul very closely.

Choices, Carly. Sometimes parents make the wrong choice & their child pays the ultimate price.

Their child was lost as a result of what they failed to do.

Madeleine deserves the sympathy.

Not them.

They did leave Madeleine but that doesn't mean they don't miss her love her and want her back does it?

You think because they left Madeleine,  they don't deserve sympathy don't you?

Well it is obvious they are suffering because of what they did,  they will suffer until Madeleine is found, is that enough suffering for you?

I doubt it, you want to see them weeping and wailing not being able to carry on living, that would suit you wouldn't it?

I am incredibly saddened by the treatment this couple and Madeleine are subjected to ... and those of us who have been able to hug our own children, stroke their hair and bury our noses in it just to smell it ... are touched by every single thing Madeleine's parents have been missing.
It takes a special kind of mentality to make the comments which have been made and I am at a loss why there are those who find it necessary to do so at the slightest excuse and why there are those who condone their actions and activities.

The mccanns have ruthlessly employed the media to portray the 'poor me' act.

What the photos do reveal is the mccanns show normal behavioral patterns when they want to, but would rather prefer the 'public' see the downtrodden image, as if they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Like I said,  it doesn't wash.

There is a 'face' which is put on in public.  Never heard of the good old British "stiff upper lip"?  We used to be renowned for it.  As far as I am concerned the Drs McCann are past masters at it.  Sometimes that mask slips to reveal their suffering.
I think you may have been watching too much lizzie taylor for your own good.

Nearly 1500 messages of support for the McCanns post about why they miss Madeleine on Facebook in just over 24 hours.  It's good to know there are plenty of decent, warm-hearted people out there who don't prefer to spend all their time on the internet making spiteful comments about the families of missing people.

This is a difficult subject for some but it should not be viewed as an opportunity to disrespect anyone.  It is not always possible to edit a thread and provide readibility without losing some reasonable content.

The McCann Facebook site is heavily censored which renders it a poor indicator of support if that is your point.  You know of course that they had to take down their twitter account (which did not allow censorship) a few days back for the very reason that it attract so much negative comment.

Nonetheless 1500 individuals have left messages of support.  That's quite an impressive number of messages for any facebook post.  It has also attracted over 13,500 "likes" - again, an indicator of substantial support and agreement.  It will mean a lot to the McCanns to know how many people do support them, I'm sure.

As I stated in my last post,  non supportive comments and dislikes are not recorded due to censorship by the Facebook page account holder.  If they truly wanted to gauge public support then they would open up the page to everyone but you and I know that won't happen because the McCanns dread criticism.

It is worth noting that when newspapers such as the Mail allow comments many of those criticising the McCanns gain thousands of 'up' arrows.

And as I have said many times before, likes can be bought.

People are entitled to their own views and opinions Alfred and that is one reason why thousands read this forum every day.   As you well know, the view is still held by many that Madeleine's parents were involved in her disappearance so rightly consider press articles like that in the Mirror with derision.

The only thing which unites most people is the need to find the truth, recover Madeleine and punish the guilty.

its a good indicator of the number of people who support them. it only takes a couple of people to cause havoc trolling a twitter account so the taking down of the account is not a good measure of the number of trolls on there

The people I have met on this topic, in person, invariably think the McCanns are up to their necks in it.  This does not mean the McCanns actually are up to their necks in it.  And it certainly doesn't mean I think the McCanns are up to their necks in it.  As is so happens, I don't think the McCanns are up to their necks in it.

I think John made a pertinent point in that there is much more to be revealed.  As to whether it will be ...

The original article tells us much about the McCann case, though I am sure most folks on here are abundantly aware of it already.

1) Take a story about multiple families with missing relatives.
2) Dump everyone else and make it a McCann story.
3) Listen to the cash register going ka-ching.

True.

Since the thread title is not restricted to the UK public - irrelevant.

Since the disappearance occurred in Portugal - oh dear.

Since I have just been reading the posts about "the Algarve is cheesed off with Maddie stories", news dated May 2009 highlighting the problem with a lack of local support - oh dear.

Here's a simple thought.  A large part of the solution to what happened to Madeleine lies in the Algarve, particularly in Luz.  Getting such people on board is relevant.

Getting such people on board is relevant.

from what you are saying the mccanns have little support in Portugal...I don't think its possible after all this time to change things

I don't think the locals are specifically for or against, they just object to the denigrating of their town and want things to return to normal.

A good example of how Amaral's determined propaganda campaign against the McCanns has harmed the search for Madeleine, albeit anecdotal.

May I ask your opinion on Mrs Murat's decision to arrange for locals to leave any info anonymously because they may be scared to contact the PJ directly themselves?  Why would they be so scared of the PJ IYO?

I KNOW from the way things are reported here that most media reports imply the McCanns are culpable.  Even though the law says they are not.

I KNOW from personal experience that the view in Luz is simple.  Getting anyone to talk about it is like pulling teeth.  No one wants to talk about it 'cos it is 'obvious' the McCanns dun it.  Can you get them to explain why it is 'obvious'.  Nope.  It's obvious, innit?

The reason I think the McCanns are not up to their necks is that it took me about 6 months to work out how to dispose of or conceal a body.  It can be done.

However, the McCanns did not have 6 months.

Absolute rollocks.

People did not need a book to decide whether they thought the mccanns were telling the truth or not.

Determined propaganda machine ?  @)(++(* @)(++(*

A great deal of the antipathy towards the mccanns is a results of the mccanns own behaviour and arrogance, and of course, thenm wanting to be the centre of attention.

I am on unsure footing here, Benice, so please take this as an opinion.

Would I want to be summoned to Faro, for a formal interview, then the answer is no, I would not.

Most of the statements seem to have been closer to home, possibly Luz, possibly Lagos, better, but still a bit formal.

I have spoken to the GNR informally re another potential crime and they were fairly relaxed and 'off-the-record'.

Madeleine was a bit different.  That was formal.  It was picked over and criticised in minute detail.

Ex-pats who just want to live a quiet life in the sun?  I judge Mrs Murat's idea to be about 100% spot on.  I. E. there would have been people with information who did not want to go through the formal investigation but who had little bits and pieces to chip in.

I am far from sure that Mrs Murat's effort gathered anything of importance.  Perhaps I need to offer a cup of tea to the good lady to find out.

I don't think that was the case in the first days/weeks after the 3rd, and so doesn't explain why Mrs. Murat set up a 'place' for locals who were scared to contact the PJ themselves to leave any info they may have.    IMO it was because they were scared of being implicated in the crime themselves by the PJ - and so were taking no chances.    I'm not thinking here of the ex pats, but the indigenous locals.

Was it a case of a the PJ's 'reputation' going before them?   If there was another reason I would be interested to hear it.

I also think it is natural for the Portuguese people to hope that it was not 'one of their own' who committed this crime - and so they would be far more likely to be influenced by the smear campaign conducted in the PJ media against the 'McCanns and their friends.    Again - that is just human nature IMO.

I have no doubt that the whole McCann family miss little Maddie, I feel heart sorry for their loss, I am genuine in that statement.

And then I am reminded by a colleague about 'The Philpot children' who were burned alive, by their parents, as they slept?  the parents in order to cope with their grief - blamed an ex girlfriend. I have no doubt in my mind that they too miss their children, and wish they never did what they did.

Which scenario are you working through?

Amaral's scenario was that Madeleine died accidentally on 3 May 2007, probably around Gerry's visit, and then was discovered, presumably by Kate at 10pm.

This gives Kate (not Gerry) mere minutes to work out the method of disposal of a body and to implement it.

No, body placed in a bin does NOT work.  I was not impressed by the checks on bins which took place, from memory on the Monday following the incident.  So I followed up what happens to the refuse.  It goes to a central site at Porto de Lagos (which is nowhere near Lagos).  At that site it is picked  through in detail to strip out toxic waste that cannot go into landfill.  The 2007 figures for Portugal and the Algarve show the site was working perfectly.

The weakness of the front end checks, in Luz, at https://shininginluz.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/body-disposal-the-wheelie-bins-prosecution-case/

The strength of the rear end check, in Porto de Lagos at https://shininginluz.wordpress.com/2014/11/11/body-disposal-the-wheelie-bins-defence-case/

Feel free to cut and paste from the articles, criticise or whatever.

It is EXTREMELY unlikely that Madeleine ended up in a wheelie bin in the western Algarve.

I cannot give a view on other locations.

The following is both off-topic and possibly inflammatory, and I have to say I have NOT researched this in any detail.  In the Cipriano case, body disposal was by putting the body (dismembered?) into a fridge, placing the fridge in the rear or boot of a car, driving said car to Spain to an undisclosed car disposal site, and having the car crushed.  (Hopefully, I have got the gist right, if not the detail.)

I am not interested in the Cipriano case.  If YOU are, you may wish to look up how scrap cars had to be treated in Spain at the time, and how refrigerators had to be disposed of in Spain at the time.  On a believability scale of 0 to 10, this tale is screaming a perfect zero at me, but hey, I have been wrong many a time before.

And how lovely that it is being discussed on a thread about the McCanns' poignant tribute to their missing daughter, a daughter you believe they dearly loved but who they casually tossed in a dustbin when she inconveniently died on them.  Nice.

There seems to be a culture here of keeping one's head down.  This applies to both ex-pats and locals.

Here is a small, true story.

A person walking in the area came across another individual who had fallen over, cracked his head on the pavement, and was bleeding profusely from the head wound.

So our hero (or heroine) did the right thing and dialled emergency services, 112, and asked to speak to someone in English.

The hero reported the situation.  Head wound, person unconscious, lots of blood, could an ambulance be sent.  The respondent asked for the hero's name and address.  Was the hero related to the person with the head wound?  No?  Why was the unrelated hero phoning about someone who had fallen over in the street?

Let me repeat.  This story is true, it happened.  AFAIK, no ambulance was ever dispatched.  The person recovered consciousness, got up, seemed OK, and wandered homeward.

The folks who were here in Luz in 2007, whether ex-pats or locals, had been through years of such bureaucracy.

Take from Mrs Murat's actions what you will.  Having experienced Portugal, I can only say that to me it makes perfect sense.  It surprises me that the PJ did a number of informal interviews in the very first days.  Those are the exceptions.

I don't agree with Amaral. If a death occurred it was earlier than he thought imo. If a body was in a bin it could have been missed by the sorters, I suppose. What a great job they have! Yuk! do you know how they do it? By hand?

In those days I think it was mainly by hand, with a large number of people doing it.

I looked up the stats for female UK children aged 4.  (Google ShiningInLuz plus Madeleine by height or Madeleine by weight for details).  The McCanns both made Madeleine 90cm tall.  The official stats make Madeleine, assuming she was very small for her age, over one metre and weighing 12kg to 16kg.

There is a ludicrously simple explanation for the McCanns making her 90cm.  Take 3ft.  Multiply 36 inches by 2.5cm/inch (nearly right, just not near enough) and bang, out comes 90cm.

Look up her M&S pyjamas in the PJ files.  They were for 3-4 year olds, so she should have been growing out of them.  They were 97cm.

So - the law required the removal of all toxic waste prior to landfill - western Algarve can be proved to be doing this in 2007 - and Maddie was a big package. She did not go into landfill around here.

As it happens, the site has fewer people working nowadays because they employ more technology to sort the sh*t before the workers go in by hand.
