“MISSING” posters of Madeleine McCann have all been taken down in the resort where she vanished.

The pictures are no longer in bars, restaurants, supermarkets or the local church.

Madeleine, then aged three, disappeared in 2007 while on holiday in Praia da Luz on Portugal’s Algarve.

A source close to the McCann family said: “It’s like Maddie has gone missing again and like some people want to erase all memory that she was ever there.”

At the church where Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry, both 48, went to pray almost daily after she vanished, a candle-lit prayer spot has been cleared away.

During a recent visit one local shop owner told the Sun on Sunday: “Everything has gone, it’s as if Madeleine has vanished for the second time. People don’t want to be reminded any more.

“Praia da Luz needs tourists and her abduction hit us hard. After so many years we are busy again and that’s good. Next year is the tenth anniversary but people don’t want the attention again.”

Having lived here for 4 plus years, I've never seen "Missing" posters re Madeleine in real life.  I know the Sun published bunging a few up after Crimewatch 2014.

I take it from the lack of content and tone we can expect more articles of similar calibre.

The whole peninsula including spain and morocco would have been awash with posters when it was widely reported that the maddie fund spent 80k on them ie posters, billboards and tv adverts

Theres no evidence of this ever happenning, on the contrary we have anecdotal evidence of just a few here and there across a few countries

IIRC at the time one major news channel did a documentary and the reporter said, he had been across morocco and saw just the one

There was the saga over the A3 posters co-featuring poor little Mari Luz back at the beginning of 2008.

Kate and Gerry McCann have been threatened with legal action after using the photograph of a missing Spanish girl in their poster campaign.

Kate and Gerry McCann have been threatened with legal action after using the photograph of a missing Spanish girl in their poster campaign.

The father of five-yearold Mari Luz Cortes, who disappeared in January, said he had not given the couple permission to use his daughter's picture in 17,400 A3-size prints distributed across Spain and Portugal yesterday.

The posters show Madeleine McCann, four, Mari and Jeremy Vargas, seven, who vanished near his home in Gran Canaria in March last year.

Builder Juan Jose Cortes, 34, from Huelva, said: "Why didn't they ask us? The three cases are not connected. We are with our lawyers."

McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "We did have permission from the family."

I can understand the Portuguese not wanting to be reminded about the disappearance of Madeleine,   it has been nine years  they want to get back to normal they want to tourist to believe that it is safe for their children to holiday there.

Though that part of Portugal will always be remembered for the 3rd of May 2007 even without posters,  until Madeleine is found the case will always cast a shadow over Portugal.

I can hardly blame the people there after the woe the Mccann case has brought them. While people will have every sympathy for Madeleine, it does not go to the parents.

IMO.

I doubt very much if it has anything to do with the parents.   In my opinion,  they don't want to be reminded that a child went missing there,   they want to put the sad experience behind them.

There's no evidence that it ever was unsafe for children to holiday in Portugal.

Perhaps SIL or other inhabitants of Portugal can answer that point.

Sorry I disagree,   parents hearing that a child has disappeared from her bed, would set alarm bells ringing,  I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of parents were put off holidaying in Portugal after Madeleine disappeared.

So the children abused in their beds weren't being looked after were they?    An abductor is fully entitled to take a child if they are in bed by themselves then is what you are saying ?

I presume that (e.g.) Soham doesn't want to be solely and perpetually associated with what happened there, either.

That said, and however sad it is, the fate of those poor girls is now known.

The fate of Madeleine isn't.

The thing is Stephen, when posters of a missing child is taken down after so many years even in Britain,  it rarely has anything to do with the parents,  it's more to do with the fact that time has past and the residents feel that it should not be a reminder anymore.

Can you blame them, after all this time.

The fate of Madeleine isn't.

Tangentially, and I'm sure that you will disagree... but I can't find any tangible evidence (aside from those "confessions") as to what happened to Joana, either. Perhaps one day, it will emerge that the mother and brother were indeed responsible. However - so far - and IMO, the prosecution case was a farce and should never have gone to court in the first place.

As I have said before, I don't believe Madeleine's fate, or how she disappeared will ever be known.

As I said in my previous post,  no I don't blame them,  though Madeleine will be remembered whether there are posters or not.

My point was actually in agreement with the idea that the people of PdL don't want to be permanently associated with Madeleine's disappearance.

On the other hand, I don't find spray-painting unpleasant graffitti when a child is still missing (including obliterating the police contact number on a billboard) to be particularly constructive.

I can understand the locals being somewhat annoyed if seemingly there is a never ending circus at a certain time of year. It would be like having the same sort of circus at Saddleworth and Cannock every year.

In the small sample I checked (two = me and mine) neither of us personally has seen any Madeleine posters up in Luz in the 4.5 years we have been here.

We missed the Sun ones after Crimewatch 2013 and we are not church-goers, but hey, nobody's perfect
