Myth #5 - The Portuguese police were inept and failed to conduct a proper search.

Gerry and Kate McCann claimed early on in the investigation that the Portuguese police had failed to conduct a proper search for Madeleine in the hours after her disappearance.  As proof of this claim they cite the almost total absence of any searchers when they themselves went out to search at 6am on the morning after Madeleine disappeared.

What must be remembered in all of this however is that most of the population of Praia da Luz were out looking for Madeleine as news of her disappearance spread.  For their part, the first GNR officers arrived at 11pm with others arriving shortly afterwards, many of whom were off duty but volunteered in any event.  These officers searched throughout the night along with the civilians and as dawn broke the fruitless search was wound down temporarily to allow those taking part to get some sleep.

To state therefore that the Portuguese police were inept and failed to conduct a proper search is simply a myth.

I must say I have always had the utmost sympathy for the McCanns but when I read all about their criticism of the police efforts I was sick to my stomach.   How f....ing dare they!!!
Most people suspect the truth but few are able to admit it.

kate mccann  whilst sitting on  her backside all night indoors, texting and ringing people in the UK,asking for priests, as if some kind of osmosis of will from across the miles would help  find Madeleine, and because it was so cold and dark, never heard  of jackets and torches? had the brass neck to complain the volunteers could have been more organised and the bloody brass neck to complain no one was looking when she decided to go out, THEY WERE IN BED after spending all night searching for her child who SHE left unprotected, beggars belief

A problem with the idea that no one was looking is the fact that the 3rd CSI unit on site within 16 hours moaned about the fact that the apartment was contaminated with the hairs from the dog teams that were out looking for Madeleine on the night of the 3rd.
What's it all about, Alfie?

I don't think the McCanns were prepared to give the police a chance from the beginning;

She also refers to an episode when Gerry was speaking to a policeman and he refused to recognised the police force, saying that more agents of authority were needed to carry out the search.

I later sent a text message to Kate that same night and
I spoke with her on the telephone. She was hysterical, saying only that she wanted to be able to hug Madeleine. She was worried by the fact that there were only two police officers in the place and thought that the police were not helping her with anything.

She told me that the police had left in the morning and returned around 09H30 and that now only a few agents with sniffer dogs were in the locale. This was all the activity that I know of.

Kate contacted me by phone, she was devastated and appeared lost. She said that judging from the action of the local police, one would think that she "had lost a dog".

    • The Lord Jesus - search for Madeleine McCann
I just think there is more background to the case than we've been told.  There is so much consternation at Kate's early claim that someone had taken Madeleine.
If they knew more than they were able to let on then they had the trouble of starting a wider hunt rather than just looking for a kid wandering off.

There were some reports that "cuddle cat" was on a ledge beyond Madeleine's reach and this is how Kate knew there had been some adult person involved in the missing kid case.
Where was this ledge?  This hasn't been explained.  It is like the abductor was going to take "cuddle cat" as well as Madeleine but put it down and forgot it or changed his mind as he left.
Which makes me think Donal MacIntyre has jumped to conclusions about how well it was planned.
