So had there been anyone else there, it would have been fresh in his mind. Presumably this 'person' would have required feeding. Jeremy says nothing of an extra place being set. Nor does he mention any sort of tension in the house -not even Sheila, who was useful to take the blame for his crimes- which would have been useful in his defence.

If he was unaware of someone else turning up while he is out driving tractors or whatever they do to get the harvest in, obviously he is taking any notice of finer details like an "extra place being set".

If someone else was present and the author of the article knew who they were and we would all know who it was. There was no one else.

I can't fault those statements.  He does say the gun didn't have a silencer on it at the time of "shooting the rabbits".
