Did it work or not - you know - the exercise to keep their missing daughter in people's minds.

Six years later there are people (I can give their names) that say they have joined the case "late", or "after others."

So how did they find out and become interested in the case - was it through the Mccanns PR efforts, that has kept Madeleine in the news media for 6 years - or did they find out from some obscure minor forum in the backwater of the internet?

If it was launched to protect the McCanns from prosecution and salvage what was left of their reputations then, yes,  it has been a success of sorts but if the object was to find Madeleine to date it has been an abject failure.
