The Mccann front door, whilst recessed, was open to driving rain.  It was wooden so possibly swelled and warped, creating noise when opened and closed ?   The front doors for all the others were from within the building so sheltered from rain.

Seems quite possible that due to this probable swelling, even with similar doors, there could have been a noticeable difference in noise created when opened and closed   IMHO
Probable swelling?  What probable swelling?

How much noise did the front door make in the TVI documentary?  From what I can remember, none.

If you wish to claim a noisy front door or swelling, kindly provide an independent cite.

I hope I have got it correct but apologies if I have not.

I believe it to be the one that got the TV company sued along with Amaral, released about a year after his book came out.

Gonçalo with A N Other supposedly demonstrating that front door of 5A could not be opened using a credit card.

I can't remember the door sticking or making a noise.

So was it a Goncalo documentary?  I saw it too, but I have not developed  my own indexing system for the hundreds of videos on the case.

Door does not appear to stick when opening in video but I'm not 100% sure it's fully closed as I can't hear the lever being retracted or springing back into place. No demonstration of noise made when closing it.

The images are such poor quality I can't make out what I'm seeing.

I am convinced we are looking at apartment 5A.  So the screw is on the door jamb and not on the door.  That only makes sense if the door will slam shut without a key, or does the key have to be inserted then you could slam it shut??

Sticking

That was in the full summer.  Plenty of time for the door to dry out, and shrink back, if it had swelled.

I wonder if the base of the front door got wet after heavy rain.  The walled pathway is lower than the parking area in front of 5A.  I wonder where the heaviest rain water drained to.   There appears to be a step up of about 2" in front of the door, but such a small rise could rapidly be overcome by floodwaters

As someone who has been flooded three times in two houses many miles apart, I am well aware of the damage flooding water can do to wood and plaster etc.

Noise

Play the video and the interesting thing is that the moustachioed man knocks the door, but NO SOUND at all.
The door is immediately opened with NO SOUND at all.

And as misty has observed in her post just, "as I can't hear the lever being retracted or springing back into place"  NO SOUND again

Sound before and sound after, but SOUND OFF for the knocking and opening of the door.
Absolute silence, how strange.

Please check and tell me that Misty and I are right.

One should always remember one's previous musings when introducing new ones. Any 'abductor' trying to close a sticking door using just a key might have found he had a problem imo.

Touchee

But why was the SOUND OFF for just the pertinent part in that video?

https://youtu.be/LXpFm-kDFWk?t=2621

As misty said you couldn't hear the bolts sliding .. and neither could we hear the man knocking.

Maybe the bolts made a heck of a racket, when double locked?  We just dont know, cos the sound was switched off

Makes me wonder why Amaral had the sound switched off for that bit?

The screw is one of at least two that hold the keep in place.
The screws are beyond the travel of the latch so do not come into play when closing the door.
If trying to insinuate a flexible strip from outside to jump the latch two things are getting in the way in this instance:
1 The weather strip which necessitates the operator insinuating the flexible strip through a right angle
2 In the event he can then the proud screw head stops the strip reaching the latch tongue.

Sketch it out and it will all become clear.

I think that's because she says the note is in the files;

Cann Page 56
Page56

From “Madeleine” by Kate McCann:

It wasn’t until a year later, when I was combing through the Portuguese police files, that I discovered that the note requesting our block booking was written in a staff message book, which sat on a desk at the pool reception for most of the day. This book was by definition accessible to all staff and, albeit unintentionally, probably to guests and visitors, too. To my horror, I saw that, no doubt in all innocence and simply to explain why she was bending the rules a bit, the receptionist had added the reason for our request: we wanted to eat close to our apartments as we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them intermittently.

Not all of the booking sheets were in the file.  They arrived on the Saturday so you'd expect Sunday and Monday's sheets to be available as well.

The note is referred to by Amaral in his book, then by Kate in hers. Their accounts are slightly different.

Maddie by Amaral

Tuesday 1st May

A restaurant employee notes on the reception register that certain members of the group get up in turn to go and make sure they* are OK.

* the children.

A big issue is being made about a comment made by Kate in her book yet a comment by Goncalo Amaral in his book is not evidenced by pages in the file either AFAIK.

I suggested earlier that Tiago Barreiros may have written about the checking. Perhaps he realised what was happening when he worked on Tuesday and thought it needed to be recorded?

When the table was reserved, nothing was mentioned about checking on the children and the only concern was in accommodating the entire group.
http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/TIAGO_BARREIROS.htm
'Tiago clearly says all the booking sheets from the beginning were given to the PJ yet only 3 of them Tues Wed Thursday are relevant.  So clearly the Sunday and Monday night sheets have been withheld.

"That generally, it was always the same people that dined in the Tapas and who were registered for dinner. A list of all the people who dined at the Tapas from the arrival of the missing child's family to 2007.05.04 has been handed over to the investigation."
