That's true, it generally should come down to the editors, that certainly didn't do Mr. Amaral any favours.

Wasn't Amaral's book produced at break-neck speed?

The editors may have felt that they were covered legally as the basis seems to have been the interim report by Tavares de Almeida, who - himself - didn't seem to realise that this was not actually what Kate's dad had said.

That was a big mistake, if that was the case, that report was totally discarded in the AG's legal summary.

But he was basing his "conclusions" on what was "known" up until he got "promoted" to Faro...

The fact that TdeA referred to what would appear to be a misunderstanding (via tabloids) was a piece of paper to wave in the air if challenged.

Why this crack PJ team never checked is quite probably irrelevant to any publishing-house lawyer.

Slightly OT, but why on earth they never realised that the so-called "confidential" manuals were actually accessible to anyone is beyond me.

They have always been accessible to the public. I read them years ago.

I must be tired, sorry Carana, but I'm curious nonetheless :  which confidential manuals on Calpol (I suppose), accessible to the public, are you talking about ?

Nothing to do with calpol.  CEOP manuals, billed as "top secret" but actually freely available on the net:
