Goodness me!
So far two folk have misconstrued my post and both are sceptics. @)(++(*
There's nothing wrong with having Northern Irish roots nor do I think there is anything wrong with being Northern Irish .
I said all bar one of my great grandparents were from Northern Ireland which means all my grand parents and my parents were Scottish so I am clinging to the one Scottish ancestry thread I have, as I feel Scottish not Northern Irish.

As I said, it doesn't really matter, does it? Over time immigrants do identify more with their country of birth than with the country their ancestors left. My husband was the product of a 'mixed' marriage. His Protestant paternal grandmother wouldn't let him or his siblings into her house, although they had relationships with their paternal grandfather outside the house. Consequently his upbringing and influences were Irish Catholic. He identified himself as English, nevertheless.

I believe the troops were welcomed at first by the Northern Irish Catholics.
I knew a lady who had first hand knowledge of the way SOME of the troops treated the Catholic population.
Gradually trust was lost.

Individual soldiers behaved differently, I expect. Some found local wives, just as they did in other countries where they were stationed.

I never did identify as English, although I don't know why.  In London when I was a child people were really horrible to Irish Catholics which did upset me,  I never understood that either.

You didn't have to be there to have some idea of what was going on.  It was often bloody awful.  And No, I wasn't there either.

Just a trite remark from you in ignorance.  But probably not your fault.
