IMO had the Smiths come forward on 4th May 2007 their testimonies would have added much credence to Jane's sighting. PJ would have almost immediately been in possession of 2 very similar sightings of unaccompanied males, each carrying a young barefoot child, within 45 mins of each other within the abduction time_frame & close to 5A. PJ would have had no excuses for not taking Jane's sighting more seriously.
However, as we know, the late report by the Smith family only served one purpose at the time, which was to deflect from Murat.

That was Smith's intention.  Why would he be particularly concerned about Murat?  He saw someone carrying a child whom he knew not to be Murat.  So in the Smith's minds there must have been a possible connection back to Madeleine.
Still doesn't explain if he thought them to be related in some way that he would sit on the information for nearly a fortnight.

'However, as we know, the late report by the Smith family only served one purpose at the time, which was to deflect from Murat.'

who is 'we' in this knowledge? and where is the evidence this was done to deflect as it could well be argued back that the T9 tried and failed to implicate Murat!

What we KNOW is what we are told.- The Smiths reported what they saw after the father watched Gerry carrying Sean from the plane. He contacted the others who were ther that eve to ask if they could recall the same.

As the general said, they thought they were being helpful to the investigation.

It may have helped solve the case IF this was reported on the eve /early morning   of 4th May IMO.
