We all know the front door needed a key.  It is the status of the patio door that you need to question before saying it was "a locked apartment".  One locked door does not make it a locked apartment.

Ask yourself, why would Gerry, or indeed anyone, go round to the locked door if there was a shorter route to an unlocked one ?

Of course I've asked myself this.

There were definitely no clues to work from, but I thought maybe he had arranged to meet someone around by the front door.  Something happened that brought on the proud father moment.  He had Madeleine for nearly 4 years,  so what brought it on just then?

I wonder why there haven't been any further child abductions in PDL since the abduction of MM?

Probably because it didn't happen.

Yeah, fancy having a sentimental moment when remembering the last time he ever saw his child.

At least not as you describe, clearly, or the rozzers at SY would have been all over it, like a tramp on chips.

Yeah, fancy having a sentimental moment when remembering the last time he ever saw his child, what a knob.
Did he have special feeling before she disappeared?

No, only after the event - IMO

You really are all heart aren’t you.  You see your daughter tucked up asleep in bed, you have a warm feeling of love towards her, you see her the next morning alive and well, life goes on, no need to mention how you felt the night before.  You see your daughter tucked up asleep in bed, you have a warm feeling of love towards her, moments later she has vanished never to be seen again, you share how you felt at that extremely poignant moment, and all you get in return from some people is scorn and derision.  Nice.

Quite often it is by a process of elimination when cross checking statements that the police are able to tie the pieces of an investigation together which enables some investigative progress to be made.

The PJ had been given Jane Tanner's witness statement at the earliest opportunity.

They had the creche records to hand which could have led them to any other individual such as Dr Totman legitimately out and about while carrying a child had they bothered to check at the time.

They had absolutely no chance of checking the information the Smith family held for the simple reason that they were not informed about it ... and by the time they were ... it is my opinion that the path the investigation was to take was set in tablets of stone.
Anyway, they paid scant attention to the information given to them by the three Smiths who came over to make statements on 26th May as no action was taken until after the 20th of September when Martin Smith amended his statement.

I think that if the PJ had all the information to hand regarding movement of individuals carrying a female child in Luz as close as possible to the 4th of May, it could have led to a far different outcome than the one we have been left with.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....
