I hold as very important that
1/ people are considered innocent until proven guilty and have a right to be treated as such
2/ people have a right to privacy
3/ people have a right to protect their reputation from defamation
4/ people have a right to access to the courts to protect the above
5/ common citizens have no standing in kangaroo courts trying to accuse and convict people in the news
Luz seems to believe that this means I excuse criminality.

In an ideal world maybe but that is not the case even in the UK. You might have the right to be treated as innocent but more than often the suspect is treated as the guilty part even before they are charged or indicted. Only to often in England a suspect is tried by the press even before they get to court.
People have a right to privacy but in many cases it is through their own actions in seeking publicity in the first place that they lose that right. As we are discussing the McCann case, did you know that McCann contacted the press even before the police arrived and gave then a lot of information?
