It would not matter if Jane was stressed, you don't walk up a street and imagine you see a man carrying a child unless of course you have had one too many in the tapas bar which I hasten to add was never the case with any of the tapas 9.  In any event I don't recall reading anything which refers to Jane being anything other than concerned for her daughter but not to the extent referred to by Heriberto.

I agree with Angelo

Moreover, apart from Gerry and Jez absorbed in conversation some 20 - 30 metres away, Jane was on her own in a street after dark, when a man suddenly appeared.

She would watch him like a hawk.  I would have done anyway

Jane must have had the cold shivers and been sick to her stomach when just 45 minutes later Kate found Madeleine missing.  She goes some way to explain why she delayed in telling the McCanns but that can be put down to the shock Heri refers to.  How do you tell your friend that you just saw their child being carried off a while ago and didn't bat an eyelid??  Just think about it for a moment....how would you feel??

Maybe she delayed because she hoped and prayed that they would find her in the resort grounds but when 10 and 15 and more minutes went by the issue had got worse and worse and because she delayed in telling anyone of what she had seen she had inadvertently allowed the abductor an opportunity to escape.  She must have been mortified!!!

If she delayed telling the McCann's, how come she was there waiting when the GNR, turned up?
Two GNR oficers said she was there, in their statements.

Here's one.

Antonio Henrique da Duarte Conceicao

Occupation: GNR Officer

He arrived alone, in his own car at about 23.50 and went to the apartment (to the entrance hall) by means of the front door (opposite the parking area) where he found the girl's parents, a couple and Silvia. He was told that the twins were still sleeping in the bedroom. On the patio next to the front door, was an English woman who had spoken to the patrol, and had referred to having see someone pass in the street, in a dark area, who was carrying a child. As the information had already been gathered and given his limited knowledge of English, he did not manage to talk to the woman.

Another.

So by 23.50 the GNR had already been told about what Jane Tanner saw.

Tbh, I thought that I read on this forum that Gerry knew early on, but that Kate was shielded from the news of Janes sighting.

I believe, gerry was present when Jane told the GNR?

Rachael Mampilly interview at Leicestershire Police Headquarters – part I/III

01.19.48 1578 'So what time did Jane tell you this''
Reply 'It must have been about, erm ten past ten  or something, quarter past ten I guess'.

1578 'And whereabouts did she tell you''
Reply 'We were just outside her apartment but there was like a space between the apartments, erm sort of courtyard-y bit'.

1578 'From the car park entrance or the pool side''
Reply 'Yeah, no the car park entrance'.

1578 'And who was present when she was telling you this''
Reply 'No just me, just me, cos erm Fi was with Kate and, and Gerry and, well with Kate and Gerry I think and all the boys were sort of, had started to look around and started to, Matt had gone to the Police Station to, no gone to the Ocean Club to phone the Police'.

1578 'What was Janes demeanour when she was telling you this''
Reply 'Erm she was quite shocked, well we were kind of bit puzzled, cos we thought well you know, could it really have been cos Gerry had just been in, erm but it was a bit of a sort of Jane was like, everybody gob smacked really that you know, she could well have seen Madeleine, erm but we did, you know we, we didn't have this discussion about whether it could have been just because of the sort of time of Gerry going in and him standing outside talking to Jez and you know, it would have been, somebody would have had to you know, sort of be very quick, or have been in the room when Gerry had gone in, we didn't talk about that at that time but, you know afterwards, erm obviously that was, I think we kept, yeah I mean we basically came to the conclusion that somebody would have had to have been in the room when Gerry had gone in to check'.

01.21.46 1578 'Okay'.
Reply 'So anyway Jane and I you know talked about that and, and then I can't remember whether she told, I think she told Fiona then, erm I mean basically you know as soon as the Police arrived, she told, she told the Police'.

thank you DC1

So it looks like Gerry knew early on, when the PJ arrived, but maybe not Kate?

And we are just not told, but seems it could have been sooner?   Any time after about 10.15 pm?.

But it wasn't just Tanner, was it ? Most of their friends knew in the first half hour or so after the alarm what Tanner had seen yet not one of them saw the sense in asking Gerry if he had also seen the man and not one of them searched in the direction intimated by Tanner.
