The McCanns 'waited four months' to sue - Richard Desmond tells Leveson

Richard Desmond told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards that the parents of Madeleine McCann waited four months before taking legal action about stories which suggested they may have been responsible for her disappearance.  He says that the newspaper did everything reasonable.

The media mogul suggested that they seemed "quite happy" that the story was kept on the front page and it was only when they engaged new lawyers who worked on contingency basis that that situation changed.

He claimed that the Daily Express had done everything it could to try to verify its reports about the child's disappearance in Portugal.

What has this got to do with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann?  Or is this section now just a general "moans and grumbles about the McCanns" section?

Gerry McCann joined,  and became a spokesman,  for the 'Hacked off'  campaign   ( even though the McCanns themselves had never had their phones hacked )

Consequently, Admin are, justifiably,   bringing  the topic up for discussion

And its relevance to the disappearance of Madeleine is?

Did you know that Hacked Off represented victims of press intrusion, not just people who had had their phones hacked?  Do you not think the McCanns were victims of press intrusion, because Leveson seemed to think so.

I think the 'relevance' is a natural progresion to another thread  (  the one questioning the reward on offer )

That thread discussed the fact that a newspaper had previously pledged a large amount of money towards a reward for information that could lead to finding Madeleine.  The thread questioned whether that kind of support by the press has changed   (  post Leveson  and Gerry's vocal involvement  in the Hacked off campaign )

It's a fair question,  and certainly worthy of it's own thread

To remind everyone...

The claim by Richard Desmond of the Daily Express was that the McCanns waited for four months before instigating any proceedings against the Express Newspaper and that such proceedings only arose because they engaged new lawyers on a contingency basis.  Basically this meant that the lawyer would be paid on results rather than by the hour.

He claimed that the McCanns were quite happy to get front page coverage.

So now we've got the discussion going on over two threads.  Great.
