This just underlines the futility of taking a polygraph test because in the final analysis it is a lose lose scenario.   It they passed it with flying colours it would be called a fluke, lucky or they managed to fool it.  If they were to fail it they would be damned and for ever doomed to being guilty.

The polygraph is very dangerous and very false.

It might help as a general asset. Maybe.

I find it odd that in the case cited a few pages above (link below) one lie detector expert found that a person was lying and another found that the same person wasn't.

Lie detectors whether some like it or not are used and are accurate to a level of 96%.

The real reason people fear them is that if they fail, others will think they are liars.

No system is foolproof.

However, if the Mccanns have nothing to fear they could of course volunteer to take Sodium Pentathol.

They are not accurate to anything.  They are science fiction rubbish.  What would drugging people achieve, again sodium pentathol is the stuff of spy stories and does not work.

Absolute rubbish Stephen.  I doubt you have been reading too many sci fi magazines.

Polygraphs are for chav day time telly shows (and they're probably harmful enough even there), not for regular police work.

Some people I note, don't get sarcasm, i.e. in my reference to Sodiun Pentathol.

However, why this fear of lie detectors amongst supporters of the Mccanns ?

First they would accept them, then they wouldn't.

Now why is that ?

Also, of interest to put it mildly, is the non-verbal responses of the Mccanns in their interviews.

Cue another debate.

I agree, the McCanns had nothing to gain from doing any of those Jeremy Kyle style lie detector tests &, more to the point, they never said they would do that.

Complete rubbish, it's not just a Jeremy Kyle' tool for chavs.

Lie Detector Tests serve absolutely no purpose simply because they are not Evidence. Often taken under extreme stress, and duress, the persons taking the test are in no fit state in the first place.
It is an American trend that will likely be dropped even by America in the not so distant future. In fact, more and more people in America are now refusing to take these tests, where it is freely admitted by Law Enforcement that they prove nothing.

Yes, as I said, only for day time telly chavs, they seem to like these little "tests" a lot though.

Utter balderdash.

If lie detectors were completely useless, then they wouldn't be used at all.

The reaction to them on here is simply because of the Mccanns failure to take them, and the pitiful excuses offered after they initially said they would.

And again

Mr and Mrs McCann, both 39, said last night that they were prepared to take a lie detector test if requested by the Portuguese authorities. “Kate and Gerry are happy to do anything that will help them to clear their names,” a source close to the couple said. “They have said all along that they want to cooperate fully with the Portuguese police, but as of today they have received no such request.”

The only people who want them to take a polygraph are the same people who never believe a word they say, and find fault with every single thing they do.       I've never read one post (anywhere) from a Sceptic to say that they would change their mind and believe them to be innocent -  if such a test was passed.   So a totally pointless exercise anyway.

Just another tired old stick to beat the McCanns with. imo

The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

Well, they would, wouldn't they.  Endless pitch forking debate.  Pass or fail, it makes no difference.  In fact, "Pass" is often better because then they can rabbit on interminably about Sociopaths and Psychopaths who are apparently well know for passing these tests.
