Kate McCann: Dignified, polite, a fighter – a true marvel of a woman

As police ignite fresh hope that Madeleine McCann could still be alive, Katy Brand stops to marvel Kate, the missing girl's mother, who has been tested to the absolute limits of what any of us could endure, but remains a dignified and polite fighting spirit.

Who would be Kate McCann? The kind of pressure, torment and double-edged hope she must live with everyday would surely have crippled most of us by now. To lose a child is bad enough, but to then be made a suspect in that child’s murder, to be exploited and intruded upon by newspapers as detailed in her evidence to the Leveson Inquiry, to deal with hundreds of supposed sightings of her little girl in the months and years that have followed from that fateful night, endless speculation, hopes raised and dashed, the break up of her marriage and feeling that this will never be resolved.

When Madeleine McCann disappeared from her hotel room in Portugal on that night in 2007 – it seems simultaneously like decades ago and only yesterday – the whole world was wide-eyed with horror. Watching her traumatised parents try to negotiate an increasingly worrying police procedure that led eventually to suspicion hanging over they themselves and accusations that Kate was ‘not emotional enough’ to be truly innocent, was a sickening and sobering experience.

The likelihood that this sweet little girl would ever be found seemed to diminish with every moment that passed, but there has been news this week that the police are pursuing new leads. Fresh hope, but also perhaps, fresh hell – that well known film quote, ‘I can take the despair, it’s the hope I can’t stand’ springs to mind, and once again I am in awe of Kate McCann as she lifts her heart and mind to the possibility of being reunited, against all known statistical odds, with her daughter some six years on.

Recent events have shown that it is not an entirely unrealistic hope – the unfolding of the Ohio abduction case that dominated the news in May this year must have had an effect on the McCann family. Abductee Amanda Berry’s now famous 911 call, ‘Help me. I’m Amanda Berry. I’ve been on the news for the last 10 years. I’m free,’ was an extraordinary reminder that miracles can happen, but whether this is of comfort to the McCanns is another matter. Another high profile alleged case of child abduction has been in the news this week too and is a reminder that it doesn’t always turn out that way.

But Kate McCann is still fighting – of course she is – what else can she do? The idea that she would let it go is one that nobody who has ever cared deeply about another human being, another living creature, let alone their own small child, would ever suggest. This is a mother who has been tested to the absolute limits of what any of us could endure, but still she is dignified, she speaks politely and articulately to the very papers that have exploited her grief, she washes her hair and puts on clean clothes, she cares for her other children. How she does it is astonishing to me, but while there is hope, she shows no signs of stopping.

A friend of mine wrote movingly recently about the love a mother has for her child. She likened it to the gold hoard of Anglo-Saxon myth and poetry – a vast treasure house that can never be diminished, no matter what. As Kate McCann faces another round of hopeful searching, tempered by caution borne out experience, it will only add to her gold hoard, rather than diminish it. She may not feel rich, she may not feel strong, but in so many ways she is the richest and the strongest.

She has probably got her wires crossed somewhere along the line. If this was true, others will have reported it surely. Besides, what can one think of a journalist who still does not know the mccanns never stayed in a hotel

Thank you DCI.   I take it the Telegraph have removed the "and the breakup of their marriage" bit which was posted in the earlier edition online?

I find it hard to believe they could have inserted such a statement by accident.  What are your thoughts?
A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

Yes removed.
My thoughts were, that the idiotic journalist, meant that to be included,  in the endless speculations.
But worded it wrong.

Dignified and polite? When?

When she was screaming abuse at Mrs Fenn? When she was kicking seven bells out of the furniture? When she was phoning PJ officers and screaming at them? When she had the bare-faced cheek to say that people needed to take responsibility for their own actions? When she called the police officers Tweedledum and Tweedledee? When the entire fund accounts were published with Amaral referred to as ''Amaral''? When she whined about the fact that the PJ officers were casually dressed? When she complained because no-one offered them sandwiches? When she called the investigators F-ing T-ers?

I am afraid she comes across as rough as a badger's rough bits

i will add ingrate to all the volunteers searching that night for  the child SHE left insecure and alone whilst out wining and dining and while she stayed indoors cos it was too dark to go out and look and then complaining maybe they(the search parties) could have organised themselves  better!!! The brass neck of an ingrate is truly disgusting when she shifts the bloody blame, but thats all kate mccann has done for years, and not fogetting complaining that if an amber alert system had been in place in pdl madeleine might be found like hell, nothing but nothing of that system will have helped in anyway shape or form, silly moo, the woman has for 6 yers hidden behind the image of a mother of a missing child and everything wrong has been blanketed with that protection, sad

Agree.     There have been some nasty cases of 'severe sourgrapes' in some quarters since the news broke that neither the McCanns nor their friends are either persons of interest or suspects in this case.      Quite sad to behold so much rabid bitterness IMO.   However,  you can bet your life that within no time at all they will have convinced oneanother that black is white, and that Andy Redwood actually meant the opposite of what he did say.   Then they can carry on abusing the parents of an abducted child ad nauseum.  In fact that process has  already started from what I can see.

The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

If the McCann's marriage has broken  down it would not be a shock   ...  not really  (  and I think there may be some truth in this,  despite the hasty re-write )

Sadly,  in circumstances that are so unendurable, that  most of us, thankfully,   cannot even begin to imagine them,  marriages fail ....  even the strongest   ( the strain is too much )

It is hard to tolerate any  'point  scoring'  in this regard  ...   and shame on those who attempt to

Why not experimenting to stop propagating myths that abduction is a fact when, according to the AG, there was no evidence to determine the nature of the crime ? If SY made the option to contemplate only abduction and/or murder, how do you know this is not in order to eliminate eventually one and/or the other ?
What about being careful not to mix up opinions and facts ?
From that position, you'd be much stronger to attack fanatics.

Sorry to disappoint you, as I'm sure you include me as one of the '[ censored word ]s' ,but a marriage breakup is not something I would wish on anyone.

Just an observation about some of the thinly-veiled schadenfreude that the McCanns had split that was very prevalent in tick-tock land yesterday.  I wholeheartedly agree that a marriage-break up is not something to be wished on anyone (Blimey, I agree with Stephen on something!)
