They probably couldnt not report on it at all, but if they had in full, some of the goings on and statements in court would have seemed a little mindboggling.

Only some weeks ago the Mccanns were on TV sofas saying how happy they were with SY progress and how the search was being speeded up, SY had make breakthroughs etc etc...vast contrast to the tardis like going back in time now

I would imagine the case wouod have some impact on the SY/PJ/other  relations

I think that was also the reason why Mr. Santos Oliveira requested a private session, although he didn't say so on these many words - if I recall, he said it was to respect Madeleine's case.
What I find strange, or maybe not, is why the other part wanted a session accessible to the media, if or when they were advised by SY not to attend the Court because of the danger of a media circus that could harm the investigation!

When Amaral's lawyer suggested to the court that the Press be ejected I believe they panicked and even approached members of the public to report for them such was their desperation for a juicy story.

But early on the first day the judge decided to reject this request, there was nothing stopping any reporter sitting in, not as if they had anythng better to do once out there

You're right on one account, the reporter is driven by the need to embellish his or her story for cash rewards.

Cash wouldn't be the only agenda to skew a story towards a certain viewpoint though, bias would be another.

Martin Brunt was with a young Portuguese lady who wasn't a journalist nor a TV reporter, but working in PR (that's what she told me)
