Missing Maddie's parents 'encouraged' by new inquiry

The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann said on Sunday they were "greatly encouraged" by new information about the disappearance of their daughter on holiday in Portugal in 2007.

   

Kate and Gerry McCann said they were hopeful there would be developments from a major appeal based on "substantive" new information which is to be broadcast on a BBC television programme on October 14.

"We are greatly encouraged by new information coming to light with pieces of the jigsaw now fitting together," the McCanns said in a statement.

"We are really hopeful that the forthcoming appeal on Crimewatch will bring further new evidence which will take us a step closer to finding Madeleine and to bringing those responsible for her abduction to justice."

A three-year-old actress will play Madeleine in the reconstruction on the Crimewatch programme.

British police said Friday that analysis of mobile phone data from thousands of people who were in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz when Madeleine McCann disappeared could provide a new lead.

They are also investigating 41 potential suspects, although no arrests have been made.

Madeleine's parents have never abandoned their campaign to find their daughter, who was just about to turn four when she disappeared as she slept in the family's holiday apartment on May 3, 2007.

Her parents were dining with friends in a nearby restaurant at the time.

Portuguese authorities closed their investigation in 2008. But London's Metropolitan Police spent two years reviewing the evidence and announced in July that they were launching an investigation into Madeleine's disappearance.

British police are working with senior detectives from Faro, in the Algarve.

In a separate police probe, the Mirror claims a barrister has come forward to tell police a man bragged to him about seeing Madeline McCann alive on a Mediterranean island just two weeks ago.

The latest unconfirmed sighting of the girl, who went missing in May 2007, follows an confession at a party in August, the newspaper said.

The witness allegedly told the barrister specific information about where he saw the girl was seen but is now "terrified that she has been moved elsewhere."

UK police are reportedly treating the man as a credible witness.

Strange how SY are asking the public to be vigilant isn't it?   After six years plus,   Madeleine could well be going out in public.

Not if she bears any resemblance whatsoever to the images that have been put forward.

Surly if there had been a credible sighting, the last thing that would happen is that it would be broadcast to the nation?

Wouldn't the police just go and investigate it without tipping off the abductor that they were on to him/her?

No,  I'm sure the police would want to warn any potential suspects they were on to them via mass media.

You would think that the case, but we are repeatedly told that the police know what they are about. Perhaps they have some cunning plan that we, the public, are not aware of - or, again, perhaps not.

Strange as this must sound, that might be exactly what they intend. There was a notorious Chinese miscarriage of justice. The police found a body and misidentified it following the disappearance of a man. They immediately arrested the survivor of a fight with that man. The case was solved when the murder victim turned up alive and well wanting state benefits. The victim of the miscarriage of justice was released with publicity. The people responsible for the murder had stayed in that place and immediately fled. The police arrested them and they were convicted.

Apparently they're looking for a live child though. Why cause an abductor to panic and potentially put the child at risk?

We don't know yet exactly what they want the public to focus on, nor even whether they are only appealing to people who were in PdL at the time.

I agree with Dhingra that they wouldn't have taken the decision lightly.
