Maybe someone who knows about the law in Portugal can answer this.  Can the PJ question witnesses who were previously made arguidos without them being made arguidos again??

It depends on the nature of the questions, whether they're capable to incriminate or not.

My understanding is that being made an arguido is like being interviewed under caution..ie non of the questioning made pre arguido status could be used in court..therefore if the MCcanns are questioned as suspects they would have to be made arguido otherwise nothing could be used

Yes, if the media find it is news ! The secret of the instruction remains though.

An arguido is an assisted witness. Legal advice is required in order to make sure his human rights are respected. All suspects are made arguidos, but not all arguidos are properly speaking suspects, at least in a first stage.
