Staying on-topic and resurrecting a very old thread, here (at last) is the article I have referred to several times that confirms the e-fits were produced by Martin Smith and his wife: (key part underlined)
In the Crimewatch programme, Andy Redwood made reference to efits (sic) produced by two witnesses (though he didn't name them).
For me, that's pretty conclusive: Mr and Mrs Smith as the originators of the two e-fits.
Having read this thread for the first time, it's clear from the thread comments in October and November 2013 that probably the key issue about Martin Smith's evidence is his credibility.
The list of reasons for doubting Martin Smith are many but include:
* delaying reporting his claimed 'sighting' for 13 days
* then doing so only after his son Peter (allegedly) rang him and asked if his Dad remembered seeing a man carrying on child on the night of 3 May, in response to which Martin Smith gave evidence that the family then suddenly 'remembered that we all had the same recollection'
* wholly contrary references to their real reason for reporting this sighting 13 days late
* contradictory statements by Martin Smith and his family about how well he knew Robert Murat
* delaying for 11 days his claim that he 'recognised' Gerry McCann as the man he said he had seen on 3 May, and last but not least....
* claiming he was 60% to 80% sure he had seen Gerry McCann carrying a child on the night of 3 May, but then almost immediately switching to supporting the McCanns by making public statements calling on the public to look for the abductor, expressing sympathy for the McCanns' plight, and co-operating with the McCanns with their use of his sighting on the May 2009 Channel 4 documentary, on their website, and in Kate McCann's book.
His credibility as a witness in this case is zero.
As for Redwood claiming that his two efits were produced by the Smiths, just because Redwood says it, I am not automatically going to believe him.
I do not personally accept that two quite different efit images of men with very different faces can emerge from an incident, which occurred around a whole year earlier, when
* the Smiths all say they only saw the man for a few seconds at most
* his head was down and/or partially hidden by the child he was carrying
* it was dark
* the Smiths themselves describe the street lighting as 'weak' and
* each one of the three Smiths who made a statement declared that they would never be able to recognize this man if they saw him again.
I cannot fathom how anyone can possibly suggest that the Smiths' claims are any kind of evidence that Gerry McCann was carrying his dead child around the streets of Praia da Luz that night.
