It's not a quote. It's not verbatim. You may believe unsupported assertions in newspapers, some of us are more discerning. There is no credible evidence that Martin Smith changed his mind about who he saw on 3rd May 2007.
Stack it against what the files said
On January 30-31 (not sure which) 2008, Mr Smith expressed a
tentative view that the man he and his family saw
might have been Gerry.
He tempered that (and demonstrated his bona fide) by reflecting the views of all his family with him that night, and
all his children disagreed with him (about the man being Gerry), including his daughter Aofe, along with her father, the most observant witness of what the family all saw that night.
Mr Smith also said he was asked to produce an efit.
He refused.
He would have.
He believed he'd seen Gerry
Gerry doesn't need to be identified.
The files then being released (and the innocence of the McCanns being made plain) is far the most obvious catalyst of Mr Smith's subsequent change of mind, and willingness, after all, to produce an efit.
The logic is inescapable.
