Also it seems obvious to me that SY as part of their investigation will have interviewed KM as it was she who discovered that the missing person was apparently not in the apartment.

Although there is no proof that they have been so it is speculation by those that say they have.

They could have been spoken to informally possibly to clear up certain issues. I know that if I were leading the investigation I would start with those witnesses who last saw Madeleine on the day she disappeared.  I would be wanting to know why the group refused the reconstitution for example.

Those closest to the missing person are always interviewed first.  The Met conducted a very discrete investigation reading all the files and interviewing people finally culminating in the CW appeal to which the response of some was a disgusting sabotage attempt.

Not in this case. This case is very high profile and it's 7 years later. Whilst they're searching for a body with cadaver dogs they can investigate all other possibilities first. After that there's one to go!

My armchair detective opinion is the same.
How stupid would SY look if they dug up half of PDL and how stupid would the PJ look if they let them ... only to decide at a later date ... whoops lads better check the parents out!! That has been done at the earliest stage of this investigation.
