When the reception have a listening service, it depends on both the receptionists memory and on the number of guests she/he has lined up waiting to be attended to.

She will attend to the guests present first almost without doubt.

If a flight has just come in, there could be one hell of a delay before she does her listening.

THe mccanns far exceeded the normal listening.  They went into the appartment, listened and looked.

And were only 50 metres away with a good view of the only open entrance, which was well lit.

Ok, let's sum it up.

Free nanny during the day - absolutely safe.
The same nanny, but paid, and during the evening - OMG! OMG Danger!!!

Mindblowingly logical.

Hardly free.  Paid for in the package.

The difference being that there wes more than one nanny with the children in the day in a room that was not locked off.   Also coming and going of people.

Totally different from one person, maybe a stranger, completely out of sight for several hours with your children.  And there was No guarentee that it would be one of the nannies either.

Yep but there was no guarantee that you would get one that knew your kids, nor even a nanny at all.  There were a lot of guests with kids but not many nannies.  I wouldn't even have liked a nanny alone with my kids in an appartment.  Different in a place where there are more adults and free entrance to parents or other OC workers, as in the creches.

perhaps its not as simple as posters think....in 50 years of butlins style baby listening..not one serious incident reported...

in 50 years how many children have been seriously assaulted and even died in registered nurseries
