Would that not make him fairly obvious as well, perhaps even more so ?

Two people seem to have seen him, so you could be right.

That he comes to the process as a witness;

He states that he only learnt of the disappearance of the child when he arrived at his place of work, on Friday, the 4th, at about 14H30, and saw the police “apparatus” which surrounded the resort, having subsequently been informed of the events by his colleagues.

He states that at no moment, did he notice the presence of anyone with an abnormal behaviour, as regards children, or anything else which appeared to be of suspicious nature.

The witness states that, in informal conversation with the inspectors of this police force (DIC Portimao), he reported a situation, which at the time seemed abnormal, but that these facts have already been investigated, and it was determined that they had no relevance to the current investigation.

Witness Statement

Bernardino Abreu Pereira da Silva (previously identified on p 372)

He confirms the integrity of his statement on page 372.

When asked, he says he no longer works for the MW OC for health reasons, he made the decision to resign.

When questioned about having made a telephone call on 3rd May at 21.00.11 having activated antennas in P da L, when his working day finished at 20.30, he says that on this day, as well as on others, he was delayed because he had to carry out the transport, even though it was late, of some tourists. At this time he was driving the minibus belonging to the establishment. H e also says, that on this day, as well as the transport already referred to, he was late because of the fact that some tourists did not have the key to their apartment.

With regard to the number that he dialled on that day at that time, he says it was the number 966****** corresponding to his wife?s number, which was confirmed in this file.
He has nothing else to add.
Reads, ratifies, signs.

B. Silva was certainly busy if he was collecting laundry at 6pm, then doing an airport run. How long would that airport run take, there & back to Faro?
Something rather contrived about those 2 statements - not least because if I remember correctly, it was Neil Berry who was supposedly identified as being the "man under the stairs"

I think the minibus was used to take arriving guests from main reception to their apartments, and departing guests from their apartments to main reception, not airport runs.

Fair enough. So it wouldn't have been unusual or noteworthy if said mini-bus had pulled up outside block 5 at 9pm
for a short while, with it being a Thursday when many new guests arrived.
The McCanns were driven to their apartment in a minibus by a Mark Warner rep, not an OC maintenance man, according to Kate's book.

It would have been such a normal sight it would have been invisible.

What about Stephen Carpenter's account of a laundry man ?...............................................................

Snippit:-

SC: And once the garage door was opened, it was not just a garage for a car, it was a type of "capsule" of about six by nine metres in size which became longer where there was a bed in the corner, and it was when we were searching this, the English man with grey hair whose identity I did not know, but who had explained this to me.

 DCF: Yes.

SC: Humm... this garage belonged to a Portuguese man, the man from the laundry.

 DCF: Yes.

SC: And when we entered the garage I asked who lived there, he replied that his son lived there and then there were distractions and because I was concentrated on the fifty year old English man, this man is Portuguese, it was only afterwards when I thought later about what we were searching for, it didn't occur to me and I think it is because of this that i mentioned it in my statement two weeks later, because I remember that there had been some distortions.

 DCF: Yes.

SC: Of course with Murat there is Murat and the Russian individual, you know....I thought that we might well be looking for the totally wrong person and the fact that a bed existed in the garage and some children's toys.

 DCF: Yes.

SC: I thought, ohhh...its worth mentioning this and that's the reason I mentioned it in my statement.
DCF: Fine, now (inaudible) describe the Portuguese man, the laundry man to me, yes'

 SC: Yes.
I am certain that I read about this at the beginning, which (inaudible)' I think that afterwards, and afterwards coincides with the fact that he was the man from the laundry and of the van parked there, because as i have already explained, we were here in a small street here above which linked to the main road and to everything beside here on top, the rest was all pathways and I remember that on two or three occasions I thought...this is a dead end road, the van was parked there, I never saw anyone and more than once assumed that it would be cleaning staff and only this thought coincided with the presence of the man from the laundry, and if there were any reply to be made in relation to the link between the van parked there and the laundry man.
 DCF: Yes.

SC: Murat here, I think and the laundry thing here.

 DCF: Yes

SC: And I would once again give the reason why I mentioned the subject..

DCF: Of what age did the laundry man appear to be'

SC: Humm, I do not remember clearly what I said, but obviously at times Europeans appear older than they are, because of

 DCF...(inaudible) the sun.

SC: Yes with the sun, that was what I said in the statement (inaudible).

DCF: I am going to try to locate the first pages where it was mentioned, but there is no description.

SC: Forty five to fifty years old, I think.

DCF: I'm just trying to think what age the man would be, it is difficult to say for the man that I saw, but he would have been of an age that implied that he could have a small child living in the garage or it could be expected that the had a grown up child.

SC: Oh, I think he would have been about, you know.... eighteen years, twenty or twenty two years old to live in the back of a garage because it had large cupboards and other things, but to live in a garage would mean that he had to be eighteen or more, because of a question of safety and because it was not the best way to live.

Witness Statement

Date: 2007/05/08

Mario Fernando Madeira Marreiros

Occupation: Laundry worker

Place of Work: OC

He has worked at the OC since the 5th March 2007 as a laundry worker as well as the driver of the laundry vehicles of the resort, delivering and collecting laundry (towels and sheets) from the apartments that make up the resort.

With relation to the events being investigated he states that on 4th May 2007, upon arriving at work at about 10.00 he saw that next to an apartment block there were various cars and police as well as members of the press, which he found strange.

Later, when he arrived at his place of work he was informed by colleagues that this "apparatus" was due to the disappearance of a little girl who had been staying at the resort.

He was informed that the girl was three years old, of British nationality and he observed that posters with her photograph and details were already up, with indications to follow in the case of information about her disappearance.

When questioned he said that he did not know the girl or her family, only having heard about them after the event.

When questioned about the day of the disappearance (03 May 2007) of the girl whose name he does not remember, he says he carried out his normal routine, arriving at his place of work at about 10.00, with a lunch break from 13.00 to 14.30, returning to work until 18.00. After work he returned home where he stayed with his wife until 21.30 when he went alone by car to Barao de Sao Joao, where his step son works.

After having picked up his step son he returned home where he stayed until the following day when he left for work.

He only knew about the events from the press and from his colleagues.

He knows nothing more apart from that the girl was on holiday with her family and twin siblings as he was informed later.

He does not know of anything suspicious that could be related to the events.

Always wondered why the PJ never gave this any further attention. The guy seems dead anxious to talk to the police........another one who failed to tell the PJ about someone suspicious at the time and only after the McCanns had gone back to the UK.

There is also in town a non-OC laundry serving ordinary local people.

Why would there be? As Brietta said, invisible because it was always around- like the thimble on the thumb.
No-one was looking for a passing mini-bus, were they? Perhaps that explains the lack of scent. Or maybe the minibus was under that lamp-post in block 6 where the search & rescue dogs lost the scent.
Lots of possibilities, none investigated at the time.

I do not think any laundry person was involved.
But discussing your idea -
Anyone collecting laundry would carry the laundry to and from the van in a large bag,
so if illicitly removing a person would do so in a bag.

Laundry/maintenance had access to spare sets of keys in the laundry store-room. The key to 5a could have been taken, used & returned before Madeleine was even found to be missing. It could have been that simple - and no suspicious prints on the key.

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/STEPHEN-CARPENTER.htm

I read Stephen Carpenter's Rogatory interview at the end of last year; I think it may have recieved some media coverage at the time as I seem to remember press photographs of the garage mentioned.

I have just read it again.

The first thing I noticed was his concern about the original statement given to the PJ ...

 - quote - DCF: And I know that before we begin the questioning, that you showed some concern about the truthful recording of the facts and that they could have had some distortions by what you have read about the event. - end quote   http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/STEPHEN-CARPENTER.htm

I think Stephen Carpenter's entire statement has not recieved the attention it deserves either in whole or in part.  Especially as he seems to have been a truly independent witness with no particular axe to grind
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....
