Investigation into McCann internet trolls launched by police

Just to get some perspective, there are thousands of people in this country that are in dispute with neighbours. They definitely know where they live and the unpleasantness is often face to face and cannot be walked away from. The police find it very difficult to take action in most of these cases.

and your point is...?  In the situation you describe at least everyone knows who they are dealing with.  There are no anonymous nutters to deal with.  That said, the fact that the police don't take action more often is something of a disgrace in my view, witness the hounding to death of a woman and her disabled child not that long ago, owing to the failure of the police to deal with their bullies properly.

Slarti, if you or your family and friends or a vulnerable person in your community were the target of the sort of online abuse shown above, constant day in day out 24/7 for 7 years, would you do nothing whatsoever to try and bring a halt to it, even if you knew your efforts would possibly (or even likely) end in failure?

The woman who you refer to as sweepyface was not been investigated by the police, but you know that.

You would also know if you had taken time to read, that I any many other people have condemned her activities.

What I have failed to see is any attempt from you whatsoever to condemn the people who are mccann supporters, clearly trolls, and, who have threatened and sent vile posts/tweets to others.

Now I have condemned those on both sides who have carried out these kind of activities.

Yes, that would be a good idea but it won't be forth-coming as there simply is nothing remotely approaching the scale of hateful lunacy directed at the McCann family coming from McCann supporters towards, say, Amaral or Bennett.  There simply are not dozens and dozens of McCann supporters dedicated to tweeting and posting hateful slurs and insane suggestions about waterboarding etc about Amaral et al  on a 24/7 basis.  If there was I would be equally disturbed and disgusted by their behaviour.

I think enormous problems might arise if one set of neighbours began to recruit others from near and afar to persecute and hound the neighbours with whom they are having a dispute.

I definitely think there would be issues if they published very clear photographs of the neighbours’ children on the internet and began loudly discussing their times and route to school.

There is absolutely no precedent or equivalent any where in the world for the campaign directed against the McCann family ... I think you will find that there is huge public approval that action is taken to have it stopped sooner rather than later, as more and more ordinary individuals or someone in their family falls prey to internet abuse ... and it is a bit disgraceful that the authorities have watched the McCanns being persecuted for over seven years.
