Well at the risk of being modded:
JP seems to suggest 50N/m2 is the same as 33lbf/ft2. By inspection it is not. 50N/m2 is in fact 1.04lbf/ft2. Best not to use pounds as one may be confused by pounds mass, pounds force and poundals.
If you know the force in Newtons required to move your yacht you may then work out the sail area required if a force of 50N/m2 is applied to the sails (in simple terms that is). If however you apply a force of 50N over and area of 1 m2 of the stern it will not move unless the required force to move it is 5.05 kgf which by inspection seems unlikely.

Sails are similar to curtains...you wouldn't need much sail...the genoa alone would be fine...to get underway in a light to moderate breeze...

I couldn't agree more.  No intruder climbed in thru that window, nor out.  He came in via the front door which was single locked.  Easy to open a door just using a key in the lock.  No need to handle the door at all.  So no finger prints.

Going back a few days here but I agree that nobody climbed through the children's bedroom window.  My own view is that the open window and shutter were red herrings created simply to put investigators off the track as I suspect a key was indeed used to access 5a via the front door.  The last thing this person wanted was to point the finger of suspicion towards Ocean Club employees.

Could it be that the whooshing curtains were in fact whooshing net curtains and not the full length main ones?

I knew we'd eventually agree on something, John ;)

Not sure which curtains were whooshing. It wouldn't take much to get a light net curtain to flutter; the longer curtain might have required a bit of a gust and would presumably have whooshed in the middle part where the window was as it was floor length.

50 newtons is a reasonable force...
I said (roughly) 50 Newtons is a piddling little force.
You said it (50 Newtons) could move a 40ft yacht.....it can't.
However you and JP then drifted off into pressure (force per unit area) which is summat different.
Let's close this off.
50 Newtons can move a mass of 50kg at 1m/s2 (it does become a bit more complicated in applied mechanics but I can't be arsed at this time of eve and it is well off topic)
50 N/m2 will give a resultant force which is the product of the force and area it is applied over.
1 N/m2 = 1 Pascal (unit of Pressure) which is so piddlingly small the usual unit is kPa which is till pretty small.
So back to the curtains! What is their mass?

If the shutters were up & the curtains open, why couldn't Kate immediately see Madeleine was  not present in her bed in the same way Gerry could apparently see Madeleine one hour earlier when the shutters were presumably down & the curtains closed?

I find it strange that Kate never mentions putting the light on ???  How did she see whooshing curtains in a darkened room?

Depends on what sort of boat you have?

The only way the wind couldn't have affected doors and curtains was if it was calm.  We know it wasn't calm that night so anything would have been possible imo.

BTW the minimum wind speed for a yacht race is 5 knots, just under 6mph which is somewhat less than the wind speed recorded in Faro that evening, hope this helps.  ?{)(**

Illumination from the lamp in the sitting room … and when the curtains blew outwards … illumination from the dim street lighting outside.

Anyway she wouldn’t have to see, she would have felt the draft of cold air and I think the 'whoosh' is a description of sound..

what we have established is that the wind speed that night would be enough to move a yacht and therefore would be enough to move a curtain...you might want to check the batteries in your calculator

Plenty of wind.

However, not one iota of proof the curtains whooshed or the door moved.

no proof is required....as I said on another thread it is crystal clear the McCanns are NOT being investigated

kate mccann made the claims.

They still remain unverified.
