BBC1’s abduction thriller The Missing is to return for a second series, the corporation has confirmed.

The second series will keep The Missing’s overall structure – a story told over two time frames – but with a fresh case, new characters and a new location.

James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor starred in the first series as an English couple struggling, in the present day, to come to terms with the abduction of their son on a family holiday in France during the 2006 World Cup.

Nesbitt’s character, Tony Hughes, works with the French lead detective on the 2006 case, now retired, to solve the mystery.

The BBC gave viewers a taster trail of the second series as the first run ended on Tuesday evening. The trail gave viewers subtle clues pointing towards series two, accompanied by a voiceover from the lead French detective Julien Baptiste, played by Tcheky Karyo.

Karyo says: “To lose somebody can destroy a person. But to find them again, when so much has passed … Well, sometimes … that can be worse.”

The eight-part drama was written by Jack and Harry Williams, attracting a consolidated audience of nearly 8 million including seven-day catch up viewing.

In a MediaGuardian interview in late November, the Williams brothers hinted that a second series was on the cards, with Jack saying the first series “will have closure to it”.

He added: “I hope people do enjoy the ending. I think it’s very true to the very first hour that you see.” Former actor Harry said he hoped viewers have “a sense of closure for the series, like you’ve been on a journey”.

Made by independent producer New Pictures for BBC1, the second outing will have the same core creative team with the Williams brothers on writing duties and Tom Shankland directing.

The Missing has attracted critical plaudits and recently secured two Golden Globe nominations for best mini-series or motion picture made for television, and best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for O’Connor.

Produced by New Pictures in association with Two Brothers Pictures and Playground, the second series of The Missing will air on BBC1 and the Starz cable channel in the US.

Don't tell me any more.  I can't watch it until tomorrow.

Okay.  I shall stay off this Thread until tomorrow lunchtime.

PS.  Was it good?

I find myself quite disappointed with the ending.. it seems that the second version of The Missing, written by the same writers is not going to be about Oliver Hughes.

Oh well, perhaps it will make the sceptics on twitter change their tune, if nothing else.
Madeleine must have heard a cat meowing outside her window.

Not sure about the cat but she could have heard dogs. There were tens of dogs every night in PDL. The owners let the dogs out every night and they play around in packs..

Didn't know that about the dogs over there. Would the tourist areas not be a little more controlled? Not a place I would visit if I could be attacked by a pack of dogs at night whilst out walking.
I was thinking about the toy connection, with Oliver having a fascination for foxes, but I don't believe for one minute Madeleine left the apartment of her own accord.

Yeh on another forum we said it was so complicated the ending would have to be simple. Really the story could have been told in 2 hours, not with all the toing and froing in timelines.......it wasnt all necessary.

I'm not sure we are Eleanor.  Maybe the new series - apparently about a new case, will dovetail with this case at some point.

I wasn't sure whether Tony's remark that only George(?) had actually seen the body was a hint to us that he could still be alive, or whether it was a pointer to Tony's continuing obsession which became so self-destructive at the end.

If that was the end of it - with nothing else to come - then I must say I'm a bit disappointed.   IMO there were a lot of questions left unanswered.

It would be good IMO if the boy at the end - (who Tony left the drawing with)  - finds an identical drawing somewhere amongst his own old stuff - maybe during a clear-out,  which makes him start to wonder............

Well I'm not giving up yet.  That Romanian could have made the child look dead when he actually wasn't.  And then sold him to a Russian family.

Watch the next series, I say.  He could pop up in that.

Goodness me.  Are we sure that Oliver is dead?

I'm not sure...

The hotel owner SAID that the nasty gang guy had killed him (which ties in with greyhairman clearing up blood), but then what's Ollie's signature drawing doing etched on a frosty window in Russia or wherever Tony ended up?

Was that a "dream" episode? Did Tony draw it himself out of wishful thnking?

Or could it be Ollie (and the gang guy didn't kill him, after all)? There's no confirmation from the hotel owner who wasn't in the house (that's just what he was told), gang guy wasn't apprehended to confirm it either, and the magistrate / mayor only had the say-so of gangman. And, of course, there's no body.

There are also a few annoying loose ends. There's no explanation as to why the "respectable couple" in the park were bribed to give Vincent a false alibi, for example.

If there hadn't been the glimpse of the frosted window, I'd have accepted that the child did die and Tony had just gone mad out of denial and grief... but the window does leave me with a lingering doubt. Perhaps that's the desired effect?

I believe it is the end of it, the new series is a new case with new actors..........

I was gutted at the ending to be honest, so many things not answered......what was the point to it all....?

I kind of felt let down. It was like being given a million dollars in a safe, and never knowing the combination lol....

So who was Vincents mother? Was it Mary?
What happened to Molly?
Why did the introduce Monique the painter?
Why was the policeman killed in the prison what for? He didnt even know who the medal belonged to, and had given it to the journalist who kept it.........If the journalist had hadnt it back the case would have been solved at the beginning, but nothing happened to him, no arrest nothing.......
Garrat what was all that about.

The image of the drawing at the end I believe was simply Tony he had lost the plot.....

The boy was dead, there was a pool of blood on the floor from his throat being cut............the Romanian was ruthless and would not have left a witness....

Waste of 8 weeks ..............................

TBH I don't know what to think Colom.   We shall have to wait to see what happens in the next series.   I'm hoping that because they dwelled a lot on the boy at the end, (zoomed into his face)  and Tony was convinced it was his son - that it might not be ''THE END''.    Ollies drawing  is now with that boy and seems to have been the main thread which consistently popped up from beginning end.

It could be that the murder scene was deliberately contrived to convince George(?) that it was all over - and so that the two men could then do what they wanted to with Oliver without any further interference or questions being asked.

I agree there were lots of unanswered questions and I too am wondering what the significance of Garret was.  On the other hand I found it quite difficult to follow at times and so maybe I missed something.

The acting was brilliant though.

Apparently two different  endings were recorded.   I'd love to know what the other one was.
