Relaunched topic.

I didn't notice any in any of the photos. I've lived in places with those kind of shutters and they didn't have any, but they were heavier than the 5A ones seem to have been. There was no way you could simply lift the ones I'm familiar with from the outside more than a few centimetres without them jamming. The 5A ones seem to have quite light-weight.

I noticed in a recent photo that that window now has a wrought-iron frame on the outside.

We were there for the second time about a month ago.
Yep virtually all the entrances are now guarded with wrought iron grids of some sort.  Even the blacony at the back which is virtually first floor level has one over the arched street side window and the sitting room window had bars.
The little side gate at the back, up to the outside stairs,  no longer has the lpretty little low gate ... but  the whole area of the gate gap has a full height metal grid over it .  It is no longer see thru and has what looks like a lock.

Madeleines bedroom has 4 bars over it.  No wonder after Petermac having the affrontery to go fiddling with the shutters on someone elses appartment !

All the iron work at each place is painted a deep  yellow and tbh the bars are too  widely spaced to prevent a slim burglar, imo

As we all know the beautiful trees surrounding the 5A end of block 5 are cut right down.  BUT , most of block 5 still has the trees as does the entire length of block 4

Still  it enabled Pat Brown to take her famous con-trick photo of Madeleines room window, didn't it ?  I wonder who set that con trick up?  Might not have been Pat Brown  herself.

Block 5 now has the search lights fitted, but they weren't on May3rd 2007, nor when we visited in mid 2010.  Similarily dimly lit block 4 still has all its trees and no searchlights.

That new search light was convenient for Pat Browns photo too, wasn't it?

Thanks for that, Sadie. Is wrought-iron just around 5A or elsewhere in PDL? I've been in places where it's not unusual at all and can be quite attractive. It's not necessarily just to keep burglars out, but as an extra safety measure to make sure adventurous kids don't get out and stray animals don't get in.

I wasn't particularly looking for security measures but they stood out on 5A.  According to my photos, the rear sitting room window is not barred, nor is the side kitchen window for some bizarre reason.  Not sure about the front door, but it doesn't appear to be barred.

Most of the apartments that I have photos of appear to be free of security grids except for the equivalent apartment to 5A in the next block, block 4.  That has a secrity grid over the same bedroom as Madeleines and additionally has a lowish gate across the walled pathway that has to be walked to get to the apartment front door.

Didn't notice any security grids elsewhere, but I wasn't looking

What I did notice is that the large piece of waste land betweenn Rua Primera de Maio and Rua d'Escola is no longer fenced in all around with white corrugated metal.  Now it is open mesh fencing.

When I was there in 2010, I am pretty sure that it was mesh fencing too.

Did you take any photos of these improved security measures Sadie?
A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

Window does not auto-lock, so replace it with a window that does auto-lock when you close it.
Shutter has no lock or bolt at all, so replace it with a shutter which auto-locks when you close it.
The easy 3 stage opening method then becomes doubly impossible.

Yep, not in detail but broad stuff like the new tall gate at the steps up, which seemed to have a keyed lock on it ... and metal grids over windows.

Was very interested in the way that ONLY the trees in front of the Mccann (and Tapas Group) apartment had been cut down.  All the tree cover was left for the rest of the apartments, both in block 5 and sister block 4

Was also interested in the big new lamps.  They were only fitted on block 5, but both ends, so some borrowed light may have filtered thru to block 5 car park from block 4 ?.
I was only there briefly and it was in daylight, so I dont know .

I would have liked  to  have revisited the Tapas restaurant to have another look, but it didn't look so easy to get in.  People were congregated in the Reception building and signing a book, I think ... and I also think (not sure) that someone was overseeing the Tapas reception.  We didn't want a meal (just eaten) so we had no proper reason to go in

This trip, John, was more a holiday and finding out about my roots than investigating Madeleines disappearance ... but couldn't resist one quick trip back to Luz.  I think Kate was there.  Hubby thinks he saw her just being driven off from a car park as we were parking.    I, personally, didn't see her.

Sorry that I cant be more help.
